Steeler Nation was in the house.

Having traveled out from Pennsylvania, home of the only NFL team to truly matter, former softball slugger Stacy Evans was greeted with surprisingly nice weather as she watched niece Veronica Crownover play in person for the first time ever.

Wielding the mitt her aunt used during a 15-year career on the diamond “back in the day,” the Coupeville Middle School 8th grader had her usual stellar game Thursday, using her superior height and reach to continually pull throws out of the dirt at first base.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to lift her South Central Sox little league squad to a win.

The Sox, who number four Coupeville girls on a roster largely drawn from South Whidbey, fell 5-4 to Oak Harbor.

Crownover’s Cow Town teammates, one of whom had her own visiting family in the stands, all chipped in with solid games.

Ema Smith, whose uncle had popped in from Montana for the game, swatted a pair of singles, stole a base and made a nice catch on a pop fly to retire the side in the seventh.

Fellow Wolves Tamika Nastali (single, stolen base) and Sarah Wright (three hits, three RBI and a gorgeous snag on a wicked liner at third while playing on an injured knee) also made their presences felt.

The hits came, before and after the game.

Playing a South Skagit Lightning squad in need of experience, the South Central Sox romped to a 15-5 win Saturday, then stayed around and put in some after-game play to give a new pitcher a chance to face live hitters.

In the regular game, Coupeville’s contingent on the South/Central Whidbey little league team made an impact, with Ema Smith blasting a triple.

Smith and Veronica Crownover added singles, with Crownover and Tamaki Nastali walking multiple times.

Nastali (2), Crownover (2) and Smith (1) combined for five steals, as the Sox took advantage of the Lightning, who were missing their normal starting pitcher.

In the extra play, Crownover continued to swing a hot bat, bashing a double.

"We're gonna

“Do you think she’s still taking photos? I just feel like I’m being watched…”

One Whidbey, to rule you all.

A South Whidbey little league softball squad that features four stars from Coupeville on its roster came out of the gate strongly Saturday, rallying to beat South Skagit 13-12.

One of those Wolves, Ema Smith, even had the game-winning RBI for the White Sox.

Despite being bugged by an injury, Smith was electric once she got in the game, slapping out three hits.

Her CMS co-stars, who are traveling down Island this spring since Coupeville didn’t have enough players to field its own team, all made an impact as well.

Sarah Wright, playing the shock and awe card, launched a pair of home runs to highlight her four-hit day.

Not to be outdone, Tamika Nastali collected three hits, two stolen bases and a sensational running catch deep in the outfield, while Veronica Crownover cracked a pair of doubles and helped kick-start a triple play.

Wright, Crownover and Nastali played for an undefeated Central Whidbey softball squad that went to state last year, while Smith is relatively new to the Island.

With most of that Venom team moving up to high school this year, the younger Coupeville players became free agents before finding a new diamond home.

First they cracked Granite. Then they swept ’em up.

Throwing down beat-downs on host Granite Falls, both of the Coupeville Middle School girls’ varsity basketball squads won handily Monday.

The 7th grade Wolves strolled to a 34-20 win, while the 8th grade team ran away with a 37-18 victory behind the play of Ema Smith and Lindsey Roberts.

Roberts tore up the Tiger defense, dropping a team-high 14 that included a flawless 8-of-8 performance at the charity stripe.

CMS will wrap its hoops season with a road game at Langley Thursday, Mar. 12. Tip-off is 3 PM.
