Huge leaps and bounds.

A year ago, the Coupeville High School volleyball squad went 1-11 and failed to make the playoffs.

Jump forward to this season, and the Wolves are postseason bound and now capable of pushing the league champs hard.

Coupeville did lose Monday, falling 25-15, 25-20, 26-28, 25-21 at Klahowya, which allowed the Eagles to officially clinch the 1A Olympic League title.

But the Wolves scrapped like a wild beast and are gelling as the stakes get higher.

“At times, played some of the best volleyball all season tonight,” said CHS coach Breeanne Smedley. “We battled and fought hard for every point.”

That was most evident in the third set, when the Wolves somehow battled back from being down 24-17, holding off match point after match point, before eventually winning the set.

“Klahowya is a strong team all around, and I’m pleased with the way we were able to not only hang with them, but take a game off them for the first time since we entered into this league,” Smedley said. “Players stepped up in key times and were playing smart by adjusting to their offense.

“It’s a great place for us to be in as we take on Port Townsend and head to post-season play,” she added. “The team is peaking at the right time.”

Coupeville (2-3 in league play, 4-9 overall) hosts the Redhawks (0-5, 1-10) Thursday in their regular season finale (6:45 start, no JV), while Chimacum (3-2, 8-7) faces Klahowya (5-0, 8-6).

A Wolf win and a Chimacum loss and Coupeville would finish in a tie for second place.

Since they split their two matches with the Cowboys, we’d then have to wade in to tiebreaker territory to decide postseason seeding.

Both the #2 and #3 teams from the Olympic League host their playoff opener, but #3 would have to play an additional loser-out game.

Regardless of who or when they play, the Wolves are hoping for the kind of effort they got Monday, when nearly everyone on the roster filled up the stat sheet.

Tiffany Briscoe (four aces, six kills, 14 digs), Sydney Autio (three aces, 12 assists, nine digs), Hope Lodell (four aces, four kills, five digs) and Katrina McGranahan (two aces, four kills, three blocks) paced Coupeville.

Valen Trujillo went low for nine digs, Ally Roberts soared for five kills and Lauren Rose doled out 11 assists.

Meanwhile, super sophomore Payton Aparicio (12/12 serving, two aces, seven digs) and fab frosh Emma Smith (three kills, one block) helped control the flow of the match.

One sound, then the other.

Thursday night’s CHS volleyball match featured a whole lot of boom, followed closely by a lot of clicks.

The Wolf hitters were spraying spikes everywhere as they rolled to a three-set win over visiting Port Townsend, while travelin’ photo man John Fisken and his trusty camera(s) fired away in support.

The pics above are courtesy him, and show just a smidge of the excitement that went down.

Unleash the power.

It’s what the Coupeville High School volleyball squads did Friday night, with both the varsity and JV rolling to big wins over visiting Orcas Island.

Serves were sizzlin’, spikes were exploding and wandering camera god John Fisken was on hand to document all the happenings.

In between trying to get more Diet Coke out of me, he delivered these snappy pics unto us. For which we are grateful.

Emma Smith (John Fisken photos)

Smith

Smith points to a bright, bright future.

And one suitable for mom Konni to frame.

And one suitable for mom Konni to frame.

Well, that settles it.

Emma Smith has superstar written all over her, and when it was brought to my attention that former Wolf legend Joli Smith was her aunt, the deal was sealed.

Back in my early days, when I was a 21-year-old sports editor at the Whidbey News-Times, Joli was among the best athletes I covered, both skills-wise and personality-wise.

And it looks like her niece, who celebrates a birthday today and plays in a volleyball match tonight, will follow in her dad’s sister’s epic foot prints.

Emma was sensational at the middle school level in multiple sports, and hitting high school hasn’t slowed her roll at all.

The tall, hard-hitting, camera-friendly Wolf is the only freshman on the CHS varsity volleyball squad, and she’s not just there to keep a seat warm.

Emma has already played in two of her team’s three matches and put up strong stats.

She already has the length to be a top hitter, and as her confidence grows and her skills continue to be fine-tuned, she should team with other younger stars like Katrina McGranahan, Kyla Briscoe and Lauren Rose to make for a formidable force.

When spring rolls around, Smith is expected to put her track shoes back on, and her blazing quickness is well documented.

At CMS, she never finished lower than second in any relay she ran in, while also showing a dynamic side as a thrower. In one meet, Emma claimed first in both the shot put and discus.

Of course, as good an athlete as she appears to be, the other part which will make her a legend in these parts is her willingness to join the hallowed tradition of Wolves who LOVE to have their photo taken.

Emma may not be at the McKenzie Bailey Photo Bomb Queen gold standard level quite yet, but she’s young and she shows great promise, either by herself or with fellow frosh like Ashley Menges, Maddy Hilkey, Ashlie Shank and Lindsey Roberts.

As she enjoys her big day (a win over Orcas Island would be a nice present), we want to wish Joli’s niece all the best.

Happy birthday, Emma.

The fire burned red-hot, just not long enough.

On the road at Friday Harbor, the Coupeville High School volleyball squad got off to a torrid start Thursday.

It wasn’t quite enough, though, as the pesky Wolverines battled back to claim a 28-26, 25-7, 25-17 non-conference victory.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 0-2 on the young season, with a trip to a tournament in Langley scheduled for Saturday.

Showing no signs of tired legs after the long ferry trip Thursday, the Wolves shot out to an 18-9 lead in the first set.

A very young team, CHS let Friday Harbor off the hook a bit, unable to keep its foe pinned down.

Still, Wolf coach Breanne Smedley was pleased with a lot of what she saw unfold in front of her.

“Our serve receiving and passing were strong, and we played very scrappy during the first and third sets,” she said. “We let the game get away from us in the first by not being able to execute in critical moments.

“However, I’m proud of how the girls battled and were able to improve on the things we worked on in practice.”

Valen Trujillo paced Coupeville with a team-high 12 digs, while Katrina McGranahan collected three blocks.

Lauren Rose notched three service aces and freshman Emma Smith, making her varsity debut, had two kills and two blocks.
