Even in a game featuring a murderer’s row of basketball players, Logan Downes made his presence felt.

There weren’t a ton of available shots Saturday at the All-State game, with a stacked roster of #1 options letting fly almost every time they touched the ball.

But Downes, the leading male scorer in Coupeville High School hoops history, did a lot of the small things.

A rebound here, a steal there, an assist to set up a temporary teammate for a bucket.

And when the ball did momentarily land on his fingertips, the Wolf senior rained down one of the prettiest three-balls of the afternoon.

Downes finished with five points, as the 2B all-stars routed the best from 1B to a 120-82 tune.

Adna’s Luke Salme and Brewster’s Brady Wulf topped all scorers with 19 apiece, while Lincoln Foland of Liberty (Spangle) banked in 18.

The 2B vs 1B showdown was one of four games played Saturday.

The other two all-senior games went to the lower classification, with 3A toppling 4A 141-106 and 1A slipping past 2A 99-90.

Things started off with a Futures game, featuring the best non-seniors in the state.

Anacortes junior Davis Fogle, who played against Coupeville as an 8th grader when he suited up for Mount Vernon Christian, poured in 39 points in that contest.

Before each game, the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association handed out its awards for state player and coaches of the year.

At the 2B level, those went to Colfax coach Reece Jenkins and Napavine gunner James Grose.

Makana Stone bowed out a winner.

Playing in her final high school basketball game Saturday, the Coupeville High School senior piled up some nice stats to help her 1A squad upend the 2A team 87-80 at the All-State game.

Stone threw down six points, snatched six boards, rejected four shots and dealt out two assists.

“A really good game. Makana represented Coupeville well,” said CHS coach David King, who was in the stands with wife/assistant coach Amy to watch their star’s prep swan song.

The middle game of a three-game day (1B and 2B opened the day at King’s High School and 3A and 4A were to close), the 1A vs. 2A tilt was a close one.

Coming out strong, the 1A all-stars blew out to a 12-point lead in the first five minutes of the game

While the 2A squad chipped their way back into the game, Stone tallied her first points on a sweet little jump shot that found nothing but net.

Up 44-40 at the half, 1A coach Shane Wichers of Nooksack Valley inserted Stone as a starter to begin the second half.

Makana played well; she got into a good rhythm in the half,” David King said.

The 2A team banged away from the outside, draining a number of three-balls to keep things close, but the 1A stars, including Stone, closed the game with precision work at the free throw stripe.

As she and her nine new teammates basked in the glow of one final prep win, her coaches watched with pride.

“What a honor and great opportunity for Makana and the other players participating today,” David King said.

One more game and then on to spring sports.

The Coupeville High School boys’ basketball teams wrap their 2013-2014 campaign tonight with a road game at Granite Falls. With no playoff hopes for the Wolves, that will do it for season three under coach Anthony Smith.

Win or lose tonight, CHS has continued to show growth, jumping from no wins in 2011-2012 to one non-conference victory over Mount Vernon Christian in 2012-2013 to three wins this year.

Coupeville’s 3-16 mark includes the school’s first Cascade Conference win in three seasons (a thriller at Lakewood) and home non-conference victories over MVC and Orcas Island.

Next year will bring changes.

Seniors Gavin O’Keefe, Nick Streubel, Morgan Payne and Anthony Bergeron will be gone and younger players such as Jared Helmstadter, Gabe Wynn and CJ Smith might be expected to move up and join returning varsity players such as Aaron Trumbull, Wiley Hesselgrave and Joel Walstad.

Aaron Curtin, who sat out his junior season to prepare for baseball, is a possibility to return, as is Carson Risner, who was sidelined after surgery for a football injury.

Which ever group of players returns, Anthony Smith expects them to get plenty of off-season playing in (“We’re going to play a lot of games”).

And, once they do return next year, they will no longer be lining up against 2A schools like Cedarcrest and Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, will leave the eight-team 1A/2A league they have called home and join a new 1A-only division in the Olympic League starting in the fall.

That will put them together with fellow 1A schools Port Townsend, Chimacum and Klahowya.
