Water wizard preps for final splash

He’s a two-timer looking to be a three-timer.

Coupeville High School senior Finn Price, who has advanced to the 1A/2A state swim and dive championships the past two seasons, is back for a final run in the pool.

Since CHS, a 2B school, doesn’t have a swim program of its own, the Lone Wolf hits the road, joining any South Whidbey water wizards, then completing the daily trek to Kamiak High School in Mukilteo.

While there Price trains and competes alongside swimmers from the 4A school, before going his own way during the postseason.

As a junior, he competed at state in the 100 and 200 free while battling a double ear infection, earning 5th place in the 100 free consolation finals.

A year earlier, Price capped his sophomore campaign by winning the state meet consolation finals in the 200 free, while also claiming fifth in the 100 free.

Coupeville’s aquatic king, who is also an Eagle Scout, advanced to districts as a freshman, winning the consolation finals in the 200 to kick off his impressive run.

With one final swing at glory, Price is determined to write an impressive final chapter.

“He’s excited to get going and has set some good goals for the 100 and 200 free,” said mom Rachel.

Wolves, Wildcat soar as Eagles

They’ve unlocked their next achievement.

Two Coupeville High School students and one from Oak Harbor were honored Sunday for becoming Eagle Scouts.

During the ceremony at the Coupeville Rec Hall, Wolves Frankie Tenore and Finn Price were joined by Wildcat Gwen Miller.

Tenore, who was the first female Webelo in Coupeville, and Miller are the first Whidbey Island girls to earn the rank.

The trio join another CHS student, Preston Howard, who achieved Eagle Scout status in 2024, and Wolf soccer player Matthew Ward, who is on target to notch the honor in the next few months.

One final state splash, then recovery

Still sick, still in the water.

Battling his way through a double ear infection, Coupeville High School junior Finn Price completed his run at the state swim championships Saturday morning.

The Lone Wolf finished fifth in the 100 free consolation finals, hitting the wall in 52.93 seconds, after swimming in the 100 and 200 free prelim events Friday.

This was his second appearance at the 1A/2A championships, having also earned a trip to the King County Aquatic Center as a sophomore.

Price, the only active male swimmer at Coupeville, a 2B school which doesn’t have its own pool or team, trains and travels with South Whidbey during the regular season.

The group hooks up with 4A Kamiak, then the small-school swimmers go their own way during the postseason.

Price splashes past sickness to compete at state

Nothing can keep The Lone Wolf down, apparently.

Having qualified for the state swim meet for a second straight season, Coupeville High School junior Finn Price was bound and determined to be in the water Friday.

And he was, slicing through the wetness at the King County Aquatic Center … despite being in the ER at the crack of dawn with a double ear infection.

Both his coach and parents preached caution, but Price wasn’t going to miss out on his chance, even though his body is fighting him every step of the way.

The Wolf water wizard, who reps a 2B school, but has to compete against rivals from bigger schools in the 1A/2A championships, finished 11th in the 100 free prelims and 18th in the 200 free.

His times of 52.46 and 1:57.00 were better than decent, but not what he had aimed for at the start of the season.

“He was lucky to swim at all today and it was touch and go with his coach,” said mom Rachel Price.

“He feels pretty awful and of course, sad about the whole thing actually as he was predicting bigger things this season and was setting up that way.

“I’m just impressed he was able to do a single turn, and he wouldn’t take a “no” on staying out of the pool.”

Price, if his body cooperates, is slated to swim in the consolation finals Saturday in the 100 free.

During his three years at CHS, the aquatic ace has been the only active male swimmer at the school, which does not have its own pool, or team.

Price joins swimmers from South Whidbey, with the group training and traveling with 4A Kamiak during the regular season.

Lone Wolf splashes back to state meet

Federal Way is calling Finn Price one more time.

The Coupeville High School junior, battling his way through the winter crud Saturday, earned a return trip to the state swim championships.

The lone Wolf, who has been dealing with “his usual Districts cold/flu” according to mom Rachel, still claimed a third-place performance in the 200 free to punch his ticket to the big dance.

Price was ranked #2 in the 100 free, but “didn’t have much in the tank” and finished fourth.

He is likely to nab a wild card in the event, however, based on his time, and could be hitting the water in both events when state goes down Feb. 21-22 at the King County Aquatic Center.

The only current male swimmer at CHS, a 2B school, Price joins athletes from 1A South Whidbey during the regular season and they train and travel with 4A Kamiak.

Once the postseason begins, Coupeville’s aquatic star competes on his own.

For now, Price has a week to recuperate, before he does double duty next weekend, with the state swim meet and his Eagle Scout ceremony both on tap.
