Pack up the family van. It’s time for a road trip.

The place to be is Earl Barden Stadium at East Valley High School in Yakima June 20, when Coupeville High School’s standout running back, Josh Bayne, will compete in the All-State game.

Bayne, who will have graduated from CHS at that point (after possibly winning a state title in baseball), was tabbed as one of the best football players in 2A, 1A and 2B.

He’s the first Wolf to get the honor since Mike Bagby in 2006.

There was little doubt Bayne deserved the nod, after throwing down an MVP season in Coupeville’s debut in the Olympic League and being selected as an All-State player both as a running back and linebacker.

He led all 1A players in rushing yards, touchdowns and interceptions, proving himself a terror both ways.

Bayne’s pertinent stats:

Passing: 1 of 1 for 43 yards. So, perfection.

Rushing: 143 carries for 1,528 yards. #1 in 1A.

Receiving: 31 catches for 460 yards. #12 in 1A.

Kickoff/punt returns: 11 returns for 224 yards, after which teams refused to kick his way for most of the season.

Total yards: 2,031. #4 in 1A.

All-Purpose yards: 2,281.

Touchdowns: 25. #1 in 1A. 15 rushing, 10 receiving. Twice scored six in a game this year.

Tackles: 91. 77 solo, 14 assists. #3 in 1A.

Sacks: 2 (while playing in the defensive backfield).

Interceptions: 6. Tied for #1 in 1A.

Fumble recoveries: 4.

Yakima, we have an incoming missile and it’s gonna hurt when he hits.

William Nelson

William Nelson

The young guns get a little older today.

A day after his New England Patriots won their fourth Super Bowl title, Wolf football player Tyler Cermak shares a birthday with netter William Nelson.

Two of the more promising young athletes to walk the hallways at Coupeville High School, they have both shone during the start of their days in red and black.

Cermak has fought through health issues to remain a key part of the Wolf football program. Whether on the field or off, he remains as devoted to the gridiron squad as anyone on it.

Plus, he’s the one who first tipped me to the news of Brett Smedley being hired as the new Wolf head coach, allowing me to scoop the Canadian papers.

Well played, Mr. Cermak.

Nelson, younger brother of Wolf netter/booter Loren Nelson, made an immediate impact for the Wolf tennis squad during his first days as a high school student.

Teaming with fellow frosh Joey Lippon, Nelson advanced to the postseason and the duo gave fans a view of the future of Wolf tennis. Spoiler: it’s a bright one.

Since it’s a Monday, they’re back at school (I assume. Cermak may be still celebrating.) and probably are limited on time. So, I’ll make this quick.

Happy birthday, gentlemen. May both of you continue to play out what looks like a bright athletic future.

The Wolves stayed in-house.

Word broke Thursday morning that assistant coach Brett Smedley has been tabbed to replace Tony Maggio at the helm of the Coupeville High School football squad.

The early-morning buzz was confirmed by Coupeville Athletic Director Duane Baumann.

Brett Smedley has indeed been hired as Head Coach for football,” Baumann said.

“I am excited and ready for the challenge of continuing to develop a high quality football program at CHS,” Smedley said.

Maggio stepped down after three seasons to devote more time to family and his job at Sherwin Williams.

Smedley, a P.E. teacher at CHS who has been the gridiron squad’s defensive coordinator, becomes the school’s third head coach in the last six years.

After Ron Bagby capped a 20+ year career, Jay Silver did two years (he’s now head coach at Mount Vernon) and then Maggio led the troops for three.

Coupeville is coming off a 5-5 season, its best since Bagby’s retirement.

The Wolves went 3-3 in their first year in the 1A Olympic League and were the only team to beat league champ Port Townsend.

Smedley should have a strong returning core of players such as Wiley Hesselgrave, Lathom Kelley, CJ Smith, Jacob Martin, Gabe Wynn, Ryan Griggs and Hunter Smith.

Oscar Liquidano and friends.

Oscar Liquidano and friends.

He couldn’t stay away.

A family move to Vegas threatened to break up the love affair between Oscar Liquidano and Cow Town, but things eventually came back around and Big O was returned to the town he was meant to be in.

His return to Whidbey, in time to join his teammates on the Wolf football squad in the early days of practice, was cause for universal joy.

A big, bad man on the gridiron who anchored the CHS line while also acting as a team captain, Oscar crushed hapless foes while always sporting the biggest smile in all the land.

The dude is that rare combination of a guy who has the imposing build of an enforcer, while being the first one to reach out to others with a smile and a joke.

He’s as rock solid as they come, and it’s great to see him getting the chance to finish his high school career where it started.

Whether competing — a three-sport athlete, he’s brought his power game to basketball and soccer in the past — or showing up for every game with girlfriend Ashlyn Miller to support his classmates, Mr. Liquidano is a class act.

He might have spent a bit of time away from The Rock, but we will always claim his as one of our own.

As he celebrates a birthday today, all the best, man. Good to see you home.

The man, the myth, the tacklin' machine -- Brenden Gilbert.

The man, the myth, the tacklin’ machine — Brenden Gilbert.

Brenden Gilbert has grown into being The Man.

From an eager kid who came up following in the footsteps of Wolf lineman extraordinaire Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel, Gilbert has put on size and skill over the past couple of years.

Now, as he looks forward to his senior season next year, the two-way lineman is ready to step into the role of being the leader on the line.

With Jake and Josh Lord at his side, among others, Gilbert will lead the wrecking crew that opens holes on offense and closes them, emphatically, on defense.

Away from the gridiron, he’s an easy-going dude who supports his classmates, showing up at nearly every game, where he is among the loudest ‘n proudest CHS supporters.

The guy is quality through and through, on the field and off, and someone it’s easy for Wolf fans to hail as a bright, shining star.

As Gilbert celebrates a birthday today, we wish him all the best.

Keep on keepin’ on, Brenden. You have a town, a nation, behind you.
