Welcome to the haze, as Coupeville football pulls into Eastern Washington. (William Davidson photo)

Wildfires rage, air quality plummets, and high school football games get cancelled or postponed.

It’s the current reality across Washington state, though Friday night on Whidbey Island would have been just fine for gridiron action.

Unfortunately for Coupeville, it was way down the road in Leavenworth, having traveled 140+ miles, and a ferry trip, one way for a chance to clash with Cascade.

The matchup between 5-1 teams never happened, though, as the kickoff was bumped from 7:00 to 7:30, then 8:00, before the game was called off.

To play what was to be Cascade’s Homecoming game, the air quality index needed to be lower than 150.

Leavenworth, which peaked at 386 at 1:30 PM, as Coupeville was aboard the Clinton ferry, was still in the 170’s when the game was cancelled.

An hour later, with the Wolves on the second leg of what will be close to a 300-mile round-trip, AQI was back up to 179.

The Air Quality Index for Leavenworth made a run at 400 Friday, and never dropped below 168.

When the announcement came, with haze hanging over the field, and a few stragglers goofing off between the hash marks, the Cascade PA guy was in the midst of trying to push spaghetti and garlic bread dinners.

“We’ve got a lot here, folks!!”

While the guy behind the mic made a public show of saying they would try to reschedule the game, it is unlikely for multiple reasons.

Both Coupeville and Cascade have league games the next two weeks, with the playoffs looming on the horizon.

Friday’s clash would have been a non-conference affair, and league games are always given priority.

Also, with the fires and smoke going nowhere, who sends the Wolves on another 300-mile trip?

Meanwhile Cascade has no incentive to spend its own gas money on a trip to the balmy shores of The Rock after making the journey last year.

So, in the end it likely becomes a frustrating story in the never-ending tale of life bouncing across the backroads in pursuit of athletic competition.

Hey, maybe the Wolves got some bratwurst on the way out of town.

Or some of Cascade’s spaghetti.

At least the Wolf coaches had fun in town. (Photo courtesy Bennett Richter)

The world has gone topsy-turvy.

The Coupeville High School football team, off to its best start in a very-long time at 5-1, has gotten some computer love this season.

Newman, the diabolical collection of nuts and bolts doing the heavy work at Evans Rankings, likes the Wolves, mostly.

As does the RPI system employed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

But real live humans?

Especially big-city newspaper prep sports reporters dreaming about making the jump to getting press box access (and free food) at Mariners or Seahawks games?

Safe to say, 98.4% of them don’t know their Coupeville from their Colville.

Except…

This week, when the Associated Press released its weekly football rankings, the Wolves made the poll for the first time since former Wolf coach Ron Bagby was rockin’ the short shorts.

Oh, it’s true.

Coupeville (not Colville) snagged seven points in the poll, placing the Wolves at #10 among all 2B schools in the state.

They sorta, kinda, know our name. Bout dang time.

Associated Press 2B poll for week 7:

1. Napavine – (6-0) – 80 poll points
2. Okanogan – (6-0) – 70
3. Raymond – (6-0) – 64
4. Liberty (Spangle) – (5-1) – 47
5. Lind-Ritzville/Sprague – (5-1) – 46
6. Toledo – (5-1) – 38
7. Columbia (Burbank) – (5-1) – 30
8. Lake Roosevelt – (6-1) – 25
9. Adna – (4-2) – 8
10. Coupeville – (5-1) – 7

CHS football manager Melanie Navarro enjoys her job. (Nikki Breaux photos)

Big hits, big pics.

The Coupeville High School football season has been filled with plenty of both.

The Wolves have roared out to a 5-1 record as they head to Leavenworth for a Friday Night Lights matchup with Cascade.

Things started strongly back in the waning moments of summer, when the CHS gridiron squad excelled at a jamboree in Sultan.

The photos above and below, which come to us courtesy Wolf Mom Nikki Breaux, are from that event.

Coupeville senior Dominic Coffman scored four touchdowns in a 48-6 win over Bellingham. (Brent Coffman photo)

The Dominator … dominated.

Coupeville High School senior Dominic Coffman scored four touchdowns, recovered a fumble, and picked off a pass Friday as the 2B Wolves scorched 2A Bellingham 48-6.

For his efforts, the gridiron giant was honored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, named as one of the group’s Athlete of the Week winners.

Each week during the school year, the WIAA tabs a male and female athlete from each of its classifications — 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, and 1B.

Winners receive a letter of recognition from the WIAA Executive Director, a Certificate of Achievement, and a $25 DICK’S Sporting Goods gift card courtesy of Gesa Credit Union.

Coffman doubled his season output with his four-touchdown performance, scoring in multiple ways.

He smashed into the end zone twice on rushing attempts, blowing up Bellingham tacklers on 36 and three-yard runs.

Coffman also hauled in a 50-yard scoring strike from Wolf QB Logan Downes and returned a fumble he forced for another touchdown.

It was the first defensive score this season for the Wolves, who also added a safety in the rout.

With eight touchdowns through six games, Coffman is tied with fellow senior Tim Ursu for second-best on the team, trailing just Scott Hilborn, who has hit paydirt 10 times.

Coupeville is 5-1 heading into a road trip to Leavenworth to play 1A Cascade, the best start by a Wolf football team in years.
