Football Senior Night bumped up

Blame it on the refs.

Or, at least on a lack of refs.

The ongoing state-wide shortage of prep sports officials will sting Coupeville next, as the Wolves Senior Night for football and cheer is being bumped up a day.

CHS will welcome Friday Harbor to town Thursday, Oct. 26 for the regular-season gridiron finale, instead of Oct. 27 as originally planned.

Kickoff is 4:00 PM.

The game could be a big one beyond the festivities honoring Coupeville’s 12th graders.

If the Wolves take care of business this coming Friday and beat La Conner for a second time this season, the clash with Friday Harbor will have playoff implications.

If Coupeville sweeps its two remaining games, it will finish 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, claim a share of the conference crown, and force a tiebreaker with the Wolverines to determine which team advances to state.

Moving the game up a day does create multiple conflicts for Wolf fans.

CHS volleyball is scheduled to travel to Friday Harbor Oct. 26, while Wolf cross country will be at the Tri-District meet at Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood.

There is also a Coupeville School Board meeting planned for that same day.

For those who choose football, parking will be an issue thanks to the early start.

The primary parking lot for CHS football games at Mickey Clark Field is the same one used by Coupeville Elementary School, which will be wall-to-wall vehicles as school gets out for the day.

The smart call is to use the baseball parking lot and come through the back entrance to the gridiron, though those parking slots are likely to vanish quickly as well.

Booters rumble with state champs

Closer, but not close enough.

Playing defending state champ Friday Harbor for the second time this season, the Coupeville High School soccer squad shaved three goals off their margin of defeat.

But the Wolves still took the loss Tuesday, falling 4-1 on the road, and this time around it counts as a conference game.

The defeat drops CHS to 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 5-3 overall.

For the moment, that pushes Coupeville from 2nd place in the nine-team league to 5th, but the Wolves get a quick turnaround.

The co-ed squad hits the road again Thursday, traveling to Marysville to play Providence Classical Christian (2-1, 6-3).

While the break between games is short, the Wolves will focus on their inner strength between now and Thursday.

“Improvement from our first game against them,” said CHS coach Robert Wood. “But overall, poor play and laziness most of the night by many players.

“Much work and meditation to internalize before Providence … or else.”

Tuesday’s tilt featured two of the top four teams in the current Washington Interscholastic Activities Association RPI rankings, as Friday Harbor sits at #1 and Coupeville slots in at #4.

The Wolves only losses this season have come to the Wolverines — one considered a league game; one considered a non-league rumble — and a one-goal nailbiter against #3 Mount Vernon Christian.

Junior forward Cael Wilson cracked a shot from 25 yards out to account for Coupeville’s lone score this time around.

It was his first goal of the season, and fifth of his career.

Wilson, who is the sixth Wolf to score a varsity goal this campaign, has now scored in four consecutive seasons, as he debuted for the Wolves as an 8th grader.

 

JV holds its own:

Coupeville’s second squad fought Friday Harbor to a 1-1 tie, lifting its record to 0-2-1 on the season.

Dane Hadsall scored for the Wolves, notching his first goal, redirecting a through-ball delivered his way by Sage Arends.

Stroll on, roll on to victory

Get in, get out, make it as painless as possible.

Picking apart a winless Friday Harbor team which couldn’t generate much offense, or make much of a defensive stand, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad rolled to a straight-sets win Tuesday night.

It wasn’t spectacular, but it didn’t need to be.

It was precision work, it came out in favor of the Wolves to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-5 tune, and it handed CHS its first home victory of the season.

Now 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4 overall, Coupeville is better than its record might sound.

Three of those losses came in agonizing five-set battle royales, while another one was to undefeated 1B powerhouse Neah Bay.

Squaring off with a Friday Harbor team which slipped to 0-8 on the season, the Wolves controlled every aspect of the match.

“We played clean, we scrambled really well in pursuit of the ball, and we played in our system tonight,” said coach Cory Whitmore as he pondered the sweet idea of an early dinner for once.

Katie Marti got things jumpin’, reeling off four straight points on her serve to begin the night, and it was mostly all gravy and good times from there.

The rallies were short, and generally ended in one way — with a Wolf mashing the life force out of the volleyball.

Whether it was Mia Farris and Lyla Stuurmans flying in from the side to tattoo winners, or young gun Teagan Calkins bounding skyward to crush a spike, the visitors had few answers.

In the middle of things, serene senior Grey Peabody was a tower of power, patrolling the net and refusing entrance to any wayward shots trying to sneak over the barrier.

The second and third sets were more of the same, plastering a smile on the faces of most Wolf fans as they watched their spikers cruise to a lopsided win.

The Wolves peppered Friday Harbor with 21 official service aces, with Calkins collecting eight of those as mom Jackie Saia nodded along in approval of her daughter’s artistry.

With the win in hand, Coupeville turns its attention to Saturday, when Forks (6-2) arrives in town for a non-conference scrap.

That’s the second match in a run of five-straight home tilts for the Wolves, including the annual cancer awareness night next week.

The event, which raises money for the WhidbeyHealth breast cancer foundation includes a raffle.

Wolf Moms have collected 15 items, including “some really great baskets and gift cards.”

Tickets will be $5 apiece or $20 for five.

Wolverines nip, Wolves chomp

They were down, but far from out.

Rallying after dropping a tight first set Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad roared back to knock off visiting Friday Harbor.

With all seven girls in uniform putting up stats, the Wolves pulled out a 21-25, 25-16, 15-9 victory.

The rousing home win lifts CHS to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4 overall, and snaps a four-game losing skid.

Coupeville actually led for much of the first set, thanks to some pinpoint serving from Chloe Marzocca, Capri Anter, and Co.

A winner off the fingertips of freshman Dakota Strong put the Wolves up 18-16, but the visitors staged their own rally to steal the set away.

Ashley Menges’ squad didn’t crumble, however, immediately taking back control of the match.

Anter sliced a winner just out of the reach of a rival to stake Coupeville to an early 3-2 lead in set two, and she and her teammates never gave the lead back.

Myra McDonald ruffled some feathers with a laser-like serve for an ace, while Lexis Drake lobbed a winner which arced high through the heavens, before plunging down to catch the very back of the line.

Through it all, cousins Haylee Armstrong and Anter were a titanic twosome, popping up everywhere on the court to track down ball after ball.

Riding high after the second set, Coupeville led from start to finish in the deciding frame.

The Wolves built a 10-3 lead in the race to 15 points, thanks to Drake throwing down a variety of winners on tantalizing tips ‘n wicked slicers, while Marzocca singed the net with a spike which slid the length of the barrier before dropping in for a point.

Carly Burt provided hustle off the bench for the Wolves, injured Aby Wood carefully kept stats for her teammates, and Anter sealed things, punching home a final winner.

The victory gives the Wolves a nice burst of energy heading into a non-conference home rumble Saturday with always-tough Forks.

Playoff hopes dinged, not erased

The path is perilous, but the road hasn’t washed out.

Coupeville’s goals of winning back-to-back Northwest 2B/1B League football titles, and returning to the state playoffs, took a ding Friday night, that’s true.

But nothing has been decided yet.

Falling 37-26 on Friday Harbor, the Wolves slip a game behind the Wolverines in the standings with two conference tilts left on the schedule.

Friday Harbor sits at 2-0 in league, 3-1 overall, while Coupeville is 1-1, 1-4.

La Conner brings up the rear in the three-way battle for 2B supremacy, at 0-2, 0-4.

The Wolves have non-conference rumbles the next two weeks, travelling to Bellingham, then hosting Forks for Homecoming.

After that comes a road trip to La Conner Oct. 20 and Senior Night Oct. 27 against Friday Harbor.

The Braves and Wolverines play for a second time Oct. 13.

Win out in their two league games, and Coupeville can earn at least a share of the league title and force a tiebreaker with Friday Harbor to decide which NWL team advances to the 2B state tourney.

To do so, the Wolves will need to slow down the Wolverines ground attack, which tore them up in round one.

CHS sophomore Aiden O’Neill punched in a touchdown — his team-leading fifth of the season — off of a short pass from Logan Downes, but Coupeville found itself staring at a 27-7 deficit midway through the third quarter.

Downes strafed Friday Harbor for three more TD’s through the air in the second half.

The first two went to sophomore Chase Anderson and the final one landed in the arms of fab frosh Davin Houston with 14 seconds to play.

Unfortunately, Friday Harbor had an answer at every turn, whether it was Victor Velasquez cranking a long field goal or Chris Gustafson and associates tearing off huge chunks of yardage on the ground.

Trying to play catch-up, Coupeville went for two-point conversions after its final two scores but failed on both attempts.

The Wolves defense stood tall near the end, holding on a fourth-and-three, only to see Friday Harbor return the favor on the very next possession.

With his four touchdown passes, Downes has 12 on the season, and becomes the third CHS quarterback to crack 30 scoring lobs for his career.

He has 32, trailing just his basketball coach, Brad Sherman (33), and older brother Hunter Downes (35), who holds the school record.

Anderson accounted for 14 of Coupeville’s 26 points Friday, with two touchdowns and two PAT’s.

That moves him atop the season scoring chart, where he currently edges O’Neill 31-30.

And last, but not least, Davin Houston snagging a pass and bolting past a defender for six means all three of Daniel and Alia’s sons have been involved in a touchdown while repping the red and black.

With the score, the young gun joins a football fraternity which includes older siblings Dawson and Daylon.

 

A side note:

Dear sweet baby Jesus, if Friday Harbor can sell a sweetfully sinful Mac ‘n Cheese hamburger in their snack bar, why can’t Coupeville?
