Sophomore Ava Mitten is part of a strong group of underclassmen who can return next season.

The season is done, but the growth continues.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer squad fell 4-1 at Friday Harbor Tuesday afternoon, bringing a close to this chapter.

But, even with a strong seven-player senior class (plus a foreign exchange student) departing, the Wolves can return 12 of 20 booters next season.

That includes veteran defensive stalwarts Carolyn Lhamon and Nezi Keiper, as well as two bright offensive talents with most of their career still ahead of them.

Freshman Ayden Wyman, who rapped home Coupeville’s lone goal Tuesday, tied senior Audrianna Shaw as the team’s #1 scorer.

Wyman’s four goals this season were the most for a CHS frosh girl since Genna Wright tallied 10 in 2017.

Meanwhile, Amaya Schaffeld, who shone brightly all season and assisted on Wyman’s score, is only an 8th grader, leaving her with a full four-year high school run ahead of her.

Coupeville’s primary goaltender, Maylin Steele, is also among the underclassmen who Wolf coach Kyle Nelson can look forward to seeing again.

The Wolves finished the season 2-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-7 overall, and were likely denied another win when a postponed match against La Conner was never rescheduled.

Both of Coupeville’s league wins came against the Braves, though it also played Friday Harbor very close, and closed the gap over the course of its three-game series with frontrunner Mount Vernon Christian.

The Wolves also garnered non-conference wins against a pair of 1A schools — Sultan and Granite Falls — and won three of their five home games.

While Tuesday’s finale featured Wyman’s fourth goal, it also offered senior Sophie Martin a chance for a swan song.

After missing three weeks with illness, the fleet-footed one capped a three-season run for the Wolves in which she finished as the program’s #6 scorer all-time.

Final scoring stats:

Audrianna Shaw – 4
Ayden Wyman – 4
Sophie Martin – 3
Eryn Wood – 3
Carolyn Lhamon – 2
Lily Leedy – 1

Audrianna Shaw tied for the team lead in scoring.

Katelin McCormick and her fellow seniors depart after four stellar seasons.

Daylon Houston and Coupeville football play their regular season finale Thursday afternoon. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

There won’t be any Friday Night Lights, maybe, but still a full football experience.

Coupeville High School’s regular season gridiron finale goes down Thursday, Oct. 28 — a day early, with kickoff well before dark.

Since Friday Harbor is coming to Whidbey, it’s a 4 PM start, to give the Wolverines a fighting chance to catch a ferry back home.

The reason for the game being bumped to Thursday is a Coupeville win would leave the two teams tied at 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

If that happens, the squads turn right around two days later and play a mini-playoff game at Anacortes High School.

The Saturday event would have a noon kickoff, and be a “Kansas City tiebreaker,” in which both teams take turns trying to score from the 25-yard line.

Come out on top both Thursday and Saturday, and Coupeville “hosts” the #3 team from District 4 in a winner to state/loser-out playoff game Nov. 6 at Oak Harbor’s Memorial Stadium.

However, if Friday Harbor wins Thursday, they are the undisputed NWL champs and the Wolves turn in gear and head back to the weight room.

With Mickey Clark Field sitting right behind Coupeville Elementary, the early start time Thursday directly conflicts with school being let out, creating a potential traffic nightmare.

Therefore, ALL spectator parking before 4 PM must be at the high school baseball field’s parking lot (next to the Terry Mobile Park at 204 SW Terry Rd.), with no exceptions.

Pop out of your vehicle, take the short walk past the baseball diamond, and discover the thrill of coming in to the football field from the back entrance — where admission will still be charged.

Consider it a little adventure.

Alita Blouin and Co. are 9-2 in league play, with one match left on the schedule.

A nice bounce-back.

Coming off a rough start to the week, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad drilled visiting Friday Harbor in a fairly quick, efficient manner Thursday night.

The 25-5, 25-11, 25-18 win in their home finale lifts the Wolves to 9-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 9-5 overall.

After playing three matches in four days, CHS has Friday off, then travels to Langley Saturday for the Island Invitational.

The regular season finale is Oct. 28 at Mount Vernon Christian, with the district tournament set for Nov. 3 in La Conner.

Coupeville, as the #2 team out of District 1, faces Auburn Adventist Academy (currently 8-5), the #1 seed from District 2 at 5 PM that night.

The loser is done, while the winner returns to the floor at 7:30 to face two-time defending state champ La Conner (14-0) for the district crown.

Only one school advances to state from the District 1/2 tourney this season.

Any thoughts of playoffs were still far off Thursday, as Coupeville entered play coming off of back-to-back losses to South Whidbey and La Conner.

Things got really positive from the start in this one, however, as Wolf captain Maddie Georges lit a fire beneath her team.

Rifling off 13 straight points on her serve to open the match, she got some help as Lucy Tenore and Olivia Schaffeld staggered Friday Harbor with blasts at the net.

Even after Georges had been knocked off the service stripe — thanks to a lucky Wolverine lob which caught the back of the line on a rally — the visitors were never able to string together two points in the opening set.

Savina Wells and Schaffeld blistered the hands of Friday Harbor serve returners, while the eternally-springy Lyla Stuurmans dropped a devastating running tip, then danced away into her teammate’s arms.

The second set was a little more of a battle, as the Wolverines hung around for a bit, trailing just 11-8.

Enter Wells, flying in from the side, and exit the volleyball, which erupted from her fingers, slammed into the court for a winner, and skidded away screaming bloody murder.

That launched another Wolf run, with Georges and Wells combining to pick up 10 points on their serve as Coupeville pushed its advantage way out.

CHS brought a lot more power to the show than the visitors did, but the best play probably came from libero Alita Blouin, who flipped a winner back over her shoulder while on the run, looking away from the net.

With the match well in hand, Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore was able to get floor time for all 12 of his spikers, with his swing players picking up valuable varsity experience.

Madison McMillan, Grey Peabody, and Katie Marti, stars of tomorrow, all chipped in with hustle and alert reactions while in the game.

Meanwhile, Tenore delivered a dominant performance at the net, blasting a team-high nine kills, while fab frosh Stuurmans and Wells put the fear of God into anyone foolhardy enough to wander through their hitting zone.

Thursday stats:

Alita Blouin — 1 kill, 13 digs, 2 assists
Maddie Georges — 2 kills, 6 digs, 23 assists, 1 block assist, 8 aces
Taygin Jump — 4 digs, 1 ace
Ryanne Knoblich — 4 digs

Taylor Brotemarkle and Wolf JV volleyball are a school-best 11-3 this fall. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Issabel Johnson hit like a freight train.

By the time the Coupeville High School sophomore was done Thursday, visiting Friday Harbor’s JV volleyball team was shell-shocked, shattered, and utterly destroyed.

Throwing down 23 consecutive points on her serve, Johnson was the first of many Wolves to soar as CHS strolled to a 25-2, 25-6, 25-13 rout.

The win lifts Coupeville’s young guns to a crisp 9-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 11-3 overall.

Boasting the best record of any Wolf fall sports team, the JV spikers and coach Ashley Menges close their season on the road at Mount Vernon Christian next Thursday, Oct. 28.

Playing in front of its home fans for the final time this season, Coupeville made short work of Friday Harbor.

The opening set was actually knotted at 2-2 when Johnson stepped to the service stripe, gently twirling the ball in her hands as she waited for the ref’s signal.

Then, she unleashed Hell.

Or, at least that’s what Friday Harbor probably thought, as serve after serve ripped off their fingertips, skidded away, or was completely unhittable.

The few times the Wolverines got the ball back over the net on a Johnson serve, her teammates made sure to quickly take care of business.

Madison McMillan smoked a nasty kill, while Jada Heaton delivered a pair of big-time thumps, crushing the volleyball and Friday Harbor’s spirit.

The only thing which stopped Johnson’s delicious rampage of terror was the simple fact the set ended, her 23-point run turning a 2-2 stalemate into a 25-2 romp.

How convincing was the first-set demolition?

The notebooks I use have 28 lines in them, which means, recording one point per line, you always go to a second page for each set.

Not so this time, as one page was all he wrote…

The second set was almost as big a romp, though the scrappy Wolverines did fight back a bit.

Katie Marti and McMillan both had strong runs on serve (though not 23 straight points strong), while Grey Peabody and Mia Farris owned control of the net.

Farris uncorked one kill which is still causing the gym walls to shake, while Peabody was a wild woman unleashed.

A tip winner here, a tip winner there, two solo blocks — which made her coach arch both eyebrows in approval — and her own ferocious spike.

The only thing slowing down Peabody was she occasionally had to sit on the bench long enough to allow the stat keeper to rest their over-worked fingers and apply some ice.

While the match was decided after two sets, the teams played a third for practice, allowing Taylor Brotemarkle, Peabody, and Marti a chance to shine at the service line.

Things ended on a very-appropriate note with Peabody soaring to the heavens, or at least the top of the net, to stuff Friday Harbor’s final rally.

At which point the stat keeper’s hand fell off, the ever-exuberant Marti bum-rushed her teammates, giving them all bear hugs, and the Wolves exited the floor like gunslingers who had just won another duel at high noon.

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 2 digs, 3 assists, 4 aces
Mia Farris — 2 kills, 1 dig
Jada Heaton — 2 kills, 3 aces
Issabel Johnson — 8 digs, 1 assist, 11 aces
Katie Marti — 1 kill, 6 assists, 5 aces
Madison McMillan — 2 kills, 3 digs, 3 aces
Grey Peabody — 5 kills, 2 solo blocks, 2 aces
Aby Wood — 1 dig, 1 assist

Mia Farris and Co. were deadly on serve once again.

Cael Wilson and Coupeville came dangerously-close to toppling Friday Harbor Tuesday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Almost a major upset.

Playing some of their best ball of the season Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad pushed visiting Friday Harbor to the very edge.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines escaped with a 1-0 victory, keeping them in the hunt for the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

With the win, Friday Harbor gets to 8-3, a game back of Orcas Island (9-2), and a game-and-a-half behind league leader Providence Classical Christian (9-1).

The top four teams in the NWL advance to the postseason.

Despite playing valiantly, Coupeville falls to 3-8.

“It was a really, really good game,” said Wolf coach Robert Wood. “So much better (1000 times better) than our first game against them.

“Played around a bit with lineup and positioning and it worked great,” he added. “Stopped every attack of theirs — except one great shot from 20+ yards.

“Bummed out man… Should have had that one.”

Coupeville was supposed to return to the pitch Thursday, but a road trip to Lynnwood to play Cedar Park Christian has been cancelled as that school deals with Covid issues.

The game won’t be rescheduled.

The Wolves still host Lopez Island Saturday, in what will be Senior Night for Coupeville’s Xavier Murdy, Tony Garcia, and Miguel Puente.

CHS then closes the season with back-to-back road games against Orcas Island and Providence Classical Christian.
