It’s crab-tacular, and it’s happening soon

All the crab-tacular details.

Time to haul out your crab-eating utensils and give them a good polishing.

The biggest fundraiser of the year for the Coupeville Booster Club goes down Saturday, Nov. 9, with a few tickets left on the open market.

The annual crab dinner and auction, which raises money for CHS sports programs, is held at the Nordic Lodge on Jacobs Rd.

Money raised goes to fund grants, scholarships, equipment and more.

Among the items people will be able to bid on are:

*Ten weeks of fresh artisanal bread from The Oystercatcher.

*Beautiful metal art created and donated from the Homecoming King’s dad or a painting party taught by his mom, who is also a talented artist.

*Power tool from Frontier Lumber.

*The (very much requested) Barrow of Beer — a wheelbarrow donated from Ace Hardware that Ron Wright lovingly fills with an amazing selection of brew.

*Condo stay at Lake Chelan.

Plus, raffles to win gift certificates to get good eats at places like Jersey Mike’s, Applebee’s, and Kapaws Iskreme.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. To see the whole parade of auction items, you have to be there in person.

Crab Feed fever consumes Coupeville

The crabs will be there, will you?

Coupeville High School’s biggest athletic fundraiser, the annual Crab Feed, is set for Nov. 9, and tickets go on sale today.

The event, which features Dale Sherman (and his velvet voice) as auctioneer, is held at the Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge Hall, which is located at 63 Jacobs Road in Coupeville.

Doors open at 4:30, though the crabs will be entering through the back door.

Tickets, which can be purchased from any Coupeville Booster Club board member, are $50 and include two free drinks.

Along with the crab and various other tasty food products to be served, the event features an auction.

A couple of highlights include a two-hour boat tour from Saratoga Yacht Charters, a champagne and truffle reception for 12 at the Compass Rose, and a hand-made Madrona wood side table with a built-in wine rack created by CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

Golfers swing for charity, remembrance

Thousands of dollars were raised last weekend at the 3rd annual Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament, continuing to spread the impact the former Coupeville resident has had on his town.

Put on by the Penn Cove Brewing Company, the event raises money for the WhidbeyHealth Foundation’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Services.

Money will also go to scholarships which the Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools will bestow on graduates of the CHS Class of 2022.

Boyles, who passed away after a long fight with cancer, was a vital part of that class.

He was a key member on Coupeville SWISH basketball teams, and one of his former teammates, Hawthorne Wolfe, continues to wear Bennett’s jersey number on his shoes while playing for CHS.

This year’s tourney was held at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor, with close to 80 duffers participating.

A team repping Savi Bank won the tourney title, edging out 16 other groups.

Big effort, bigger payout

Attacking the hills and enjoying the new coating recently put down by county crews on the Kettles Trail.

Year three was a rousing success.

A group of Whidbey Island athletes successfully pulled off “Circumnavigate Whidbey 2019” this weekend, raising $27,000 for Coupeville students.

The event, started by James Steller, benefits the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools, which provides support, grants, and scholarships.

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, athletes ran, biked, and swam their way around Whidbey, traveling the complete length of one of the longest islands in the USA.

Andrew Wyman and Neil Rixe took home unofficial honors as iron men, with the former doing all sports and all distances, while the latter hit the bike like he was in the middle of the Tour de France.

“He biked a zillion miles and never lost speed. Superhuman!,” said an impressed Steller, who threw down the equivalent of two half Ironman Triathlons himself this weekend.

Pat O’Hara joined the core group for day one’s activities, while Greg White was in the thick of things on day two.

Also completing full legs (or more) were Grant Steller, Cole White, Jameson O’Hara, Korianne Emerson, Heidi Mayne, and Alysha Emerson Best.

Giving things a true family feel, kids of all ages jumped in to run bits and pieces of the event, making for “a lot of feels.” 

Pulling off a multi-day event required the help of a large, enthusiastic support crew.

Among those who gave up their holiday weekend to make the magic happen were chief planner Karen Price, support drivers Chic Merwine and Terry Welch, photographer to the stars Morgan White, and the indispensable duo of Amber Wyman and Holley Steller.

Shell Puget Sound Refinery, where James Steller works, made a substantial donation to the event, while money also came from a wide variety of others.

“It is not possible without our amazing community,” Steller said.

“I also want to thank the teachers and administrators of Coupeville Schools, who make a difference in our children’s lives every day!,” he added. “You are loved and appreciated and this is the least we can do for you!!!! Till next year!”
