Basketball be back.

Making their home debut Wednesday, Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball players became the first Wolves to hoop it up.

Along for the ride, madly clicking away, was photographer John Fisken.

The “hired guns” did their job, and they did it well.

With Coupeville not having a youth football program, local boys end up playing ball in Oak Harbor, and a pack of Wolves spread across three teams all had success on a rainy Saturday.

Logan Downes hauled in a 15-yard reception, busted out a 20-yard run and chased down a runner nearly the length of the field to save a touchdown as the Oak Harbor Pee Wees won 27-0.

The Oak Harbor Juniors, paced by Matthew Kelley and Gavin St Onge, held off Burlington-Edison 12-6.

Kelley, who also played in a soccer game the same day (his team won 4-1) had seven tackles and helped his team get an important first down when he got his defender to pick up a flag for tackling him before the catch on fourth down.

A step above, Coupeville eighth graders Gabe Eck, Ty Eck and Alex Turner helped their Oak Harbor squad defeat LaConner 22-6.

All three Wildcat teams will return to the gridiron for another playoff game Saturday, Nov. 1.

Ty Eck was en fuego Saturday.

The eighth grader hit pay dirt nearly every time he touched the ball, busting off touchdown runs of 72 and 82 yards while also teaming up with quarterback brother Gabe on a 75-yard pass-and-run-like-crazy play.

Fueled by the Coupeville duo, who are masquerading as Wildcats right now, Oak Harbor savaged Sedro-Woolley 49-8 in youth football play.

They are joined on their squad by a third Coupeville player, fellow eighth grader Alex Turner.

You’re wearing the wrong colors, son.

Part of me says not to run this photo, because this is freakin’ Coupeville Sports and not Oak Harbor Sports.

I start running big city stuff, and there’s no end to it. Next thing you know the South Enders will expect some coverage, as well.

But, it’s a nice photo … and the Eck brothers, Gabe and Ty, are at heart, Coupeville kids.

They starred for Coupeville Middle School as seventh graders, and, while they have moved North for their eighth grade football season, there is a strong shot they will be back in red and black when it’s time to hit the field for high school ball.

At least that’s my hope, and I’m sticking to it.

I’m sorry, but they don’t look right in purple and gold.

No one does.

And this is coming from a guy whose diploma is yes, purple and gold, since the last semester of my high school career came at OHHS after a family move from Tumwater.

So, in the interest of poaching some page hits from that place where they hold Holland Happening and where I go to watch my movies, I’ll let this photo slip by.

But seriously, while I won’t tell any parent where they should send their children, or tell any players what town they should suit up for …

COW TOWN, BABY!!!!!

I’m just saying, you want 24-7-365 coverage, you hang out on the prairie. Cause next time you’re sporting purple and gold, I may not recognize you.

Football is their ticket across the USA.

As they prepare for their eighth grade season at Coupeville Middle School, twins Gabe and Ty Eck are already familiar with their helmet and pads.

The pair took a brief break from their spring baseball season, when they played for the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth squad, to attend a three-day football camp at the University of Oregon.

Out of 350 players in grades 8-12, camp officials singled out 32 to receive awards, with Ty Eck being tabbed as the Most Outstanding 8th Grade Defensive Back.

Then, after wrapping their baseball season, the Ecks hit the road for a far longer trip, heading off to Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

While there, the duo attended the week-long USA Football’s National Team Development Games. The event, sponsored by Shock Doctor, was held at Walsh University.

Drawing in players from across the country, the event, which boasted more than 180 incoming eighth-grade and freshman players, was a 2-in-1 affair.

Players had the chance to receive coaching and skills work while also getting a chance to compete for spots on the U15 U.S. National Team, which competes against Canada in the International Bowl.

Playing and practicing in front of current NCAA coaches and USA Football scouts, the Ecks and their fellow players competed in game action and had numerous seminars.

While there, they received instruction on proper equipment fitting, concussion education, heat preparedness and hydration education and proper tackling techniques.
