Pitch shockers KO Wolf playoff hopes!!

The final night was a stunner.

The North Sound Conference closed out its inaugural girls soccer season Wednesday, and upsets in two of three games threw the playoff picture out of whack.

South Whidbey shocked King’s 2-0 to give the defending 1A state champs their only league loss, while Sultan, which had been win-less in conference play for much of the year, beat Cedar Park Christian 1-0 for the Turks second win in a week.

All that, combined with Coupeville falling 5-1 at Granite Falls, flipped the league’s #2 and #3 playoff seeds and knocked the Wolves out of the #5 slot, ending their season without a postseason game.

King’s (9-1), South Whidbey (7-3), Granite Falls (7-3), CPC (4-6) and Sultan (2-8) advance to the modified double-elimination district playoffs against teams from the Northwest Conference, while Coupeville (1-9) stays home.

The Wolves, who finished 2-12-1 overall, with wins over Sultan and Port Townsend and a tie against Friday Harbor, entered the night holding a tiebreaker on Sultan for the final playoff berth.

While both teams had one win, coming against each other (CHS won 6-0 on their field, Sultan won 1-0 on theirs), the Wolves were a point up in the standings because of getting extra credit for a double-overtime loss to CPC.

That advantage vanished, however, when the Turks pulled out a nail-biter in the final regular season game.

Meanwhile, playing in Granite Falls, Coupeville got a first-half goal from junior Avalon Renninger, her third of the season, but it wasn’t enough to topple the rough ‘n tumble Tigers.

The loss turned out to be the final prep soccer game for four Wolf seniors, as Ema Smith, Maddy Hilkey, Lindsey Roberts and Sarah Wright depart.

The cupboard isn’t bare, however, as five of the six players who scored during the 2018 season can return next year, when it appears very likely Coupeville will drop from 1A to 2B.

There’s usually two ways to look at things.

There is no doubt scoring is down for the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad this season.

After stringing together three consecutive years of 30+ goals as a team, topping out with a 47-goal explosion in 2016, the current Wolves seem unlikely to reach those heights.

The 2018 squad has tallied 15 scores through its first 11 games.

With just four regular-season games left on the schedule, plus (hopefully) a postseason appearance, the Wolves would have to radically ramp up their scoring to keep the streak alive.

But, the first of those four games comes Tuesday at Sultan, against a Turks team Coupeville ravaged for six goals the first time around.

And, tack on just four more scores before the season is over and done, and the current team will still have the fourth-best showing of any Wolf squad from the last decade.

Booters get off the schneid!!

Lindsey Roberts also found the back of the net against Port Townsend, scoring for the 17th time in her stellar career.

Let the goals flow.

With sophomore sensation Genna Wright banging home a hat trick Thursday night, the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad turned its offense back on in a big way, snapping two dry spells at once.

Romping to a 5-0 non-conference win over visiting Port Townsend, the Wolves ended a six-game losing streak which stretched back three weeks.

It also signaled a major turn for the positive for a pitch squad which has been putting up strong shots, only to watch them narrowly miss time after time.

CHS had tallied just two goals during its losing skid, suffering four shut-outs during that run.

That changed Thursday, as the Wolves lifted their season mark to 2-8-1.

Wright tossed in three goals, giving her a team-high five for the season.

With 15 scores in less than two full seasons of play, the Wolf ace is almost halfway to Mia Littlejohn’s program record of 35 goals.

Thursday, she was joined by junior forward Anna Dion, who scored her first goal of the season, and senior midfielder Lindsey Roberts, who notched her fourth tally of 2018.

Roberts has 17 goals for her career, keeping her slightly ahead of the fast-charging Wright on the Wolf career scoring chart.

Coupeville has a prime opportunity to keep the offense flowing, and possibly start its first winning streak of the season.

After a couple days off, the Wolves head to the wilds of Sultan Tuesday, Oct. 9 to face a Turks team it throttled 6-0 the first time around.

That clash kicks off the final stretch of the regular season for CHS, which then plays Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey at home, before closing league play on the road at Granite Falls Oct. 17.

Postseason brackets are expected to be revealed in the next day or two, but it seems likely five of the six North Sound Conference teams will advance to the modified double-elimination playoffs.

At 1-5 in league play, Coupeville currently sits in fifth-place, a game up on Sultan (0-6) and two back of Cedar Park Christian (3-3).

Road warriors nipped!!

It was there, then it was gone, but they want to get it back.

Playing on turf in Bothell Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad had a close game slip away, causing the Wolves to fall 3-1 to host Cedar Park Christian.

The loss drops CHS to 1-2 in North Sound Conference play, 1-4-1 overall.

Coupeville came out strongly in the first half, with Genna Wright rifling home a goal to knot things at 1-1 headed into the break.

That tally, her second of the season, moves the Wolf sophomore into a four-way tie with Mallory Kortuem, Avalon Renninger and Lindsey Roberts atop the team scoring chart.

The Wolves scoring touch went cold after halftime, however, while Cedar Park broke through with a go-ahead goal and then an insurance score.

“We just were not able to convert on a number of chances in the second half,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson.

The two teams will clash again Oct. 11 on Whidbey, and Nelson is already looking towards the match-up.

“Should be a good game when we host them later in the season.”

The Wolves, who are in the midst of a four-game road trip, return to action Saturday, when they face Mount Vernon Christian in a non-conference rumble.

After that, seven of the final eight games on the regular-season schedule are league affairs.

No, no, no, no, nooo!!

Well, that didn’t go quite the way everyone expected.

After four years of drilling Chimacum on the soccer pitch during their Olympic League days, Saturday’s non-conference tilt seemed like a good bet to land in the win column for Coupeville.

But it wasn’t to be.

Shocking the world, the host Cowboys snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Wolves, dismantling the visitors 5-0.

The unexpected loss, a complete reversal from a well-executed win Thursday against Sultan, drops the Wolves to 1-3-1 on the season.

From 2014 to 2017, Coupeville’s female booters swept every game they played against Chimacum, outscoring the Cowboys 35-9.

The contests in that series played out one of two ways, with five games decided by a single goal and five decided by five or more goals.

Saturday’s bout joined the list of blowouts, just with the wrong team dominating.

It was the third time in five games Coupeville has been shut out this season.

The Wolves, who sit at 1-1 in North Sound Conference play, return to action next Tuesday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Bothell to face Cedar Park Christian (3-2, 1-1).

The loss at Chimacum marked the start of four straight road games for CHS, which doesn’t play at home again until Sept. 27.
