Spread the love.

That’s what the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad has done this season, with a program-best 12 players recording a goal.

The latest players to join the back of the net club are Emma Cushman and Hailey Goldman, who knocked in their first scores in a Wolf uniform Thursday to lift CHS to a 2-0 win at Providence Classical Christian.

The victory gets Coupeville back to .500 all the way around, as Jasmine Ader’s squad now sits at 3-3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-4-2 overall.

With four conference clashes left on the schedule, led off by a road trip October 14 to winless Orcas Island, the Wolves are currently in fourth place in the seven-team NWL, and need a top three finish to earn a playoff berth.

Mount Vernon Christian (7-0 for 21 points), Friday Harbor (5-2 for 15), and Lopez Island (4-2-2 for 14) currently have those slots, with Coupeville hot on their heels with 11 points.

La Conner (2-2-2 for eight points), PCC (2-6 for six points) and Orcas (0-8 for nada) round out the standings.

Thursday’s win was huge for the Wolves and came from a strong team-wide effort.

Finley Helm and Bella Sandlin shared time in net, combining for the shutout and both coming up with big saves.

The former had an eye-popping dive save on a PCC shot, while the latter came up huge in the final 30 seconds of the game, snagging an incoming laser to keep the lid firmly clamped on the net.

Cushman’s goal was nailed on a successful penalty kick, while Goldman converted her score off of a pass from Lillian Ketterling, who sent a crisp shot in from the corner.

Even with Tamsin Ward, last year’s leading scorer, sidelined by a season-long injury so far, the Wolves have spread out their 22 goals between 12 players.

That handily beats the previous best tally of nine goal scorers set during the 2015 and 2017 seasons.

The rematch did not go according to plan.

Facing off with visiting Lopez Island Monday, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad fell 4-0, an unfortunate reversal of fortune after battling the Lobos to a 2-2 tie the first time around.

Unable to find any openings in a fairly tight defense, the Wolves slip to 2-3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-4-2 overall.

Jasmine Ader’s squad gets a chance to bounce back Thursday, however, when it travels to Bothell to square off with Providence Classical Christian, which sits at 1-5 in conference action.

Lopez broke a scoreless tie with a goal off of a booming free kick in the game’s 14th minute, then tacked on another score in stoppage time right before halftime.

Coupeville’s defense, which was under fire for most of the game, fought back hard.

Spearheading things was Lyla Grose, who chased down several would-be scorers, upending one a step or two in front of the goal, while drilling a ball off of another’s stomach to discourage her from thinking about shooting ever again.

Unfortunately, the Wolves had trouble mounting any offensive rallies of their own, with Lillian Ketterling, Lucy Schisel, and Hazel Goldman putting shots on goal, but the Lobo defense unwilling to break.

With the game still at 2-0 heading into the final 10 minutes, the visitors broke things open with two more goals in a two-minute span.

Even in defeat, the Wolves stayed plucky until the end, with freshman goalie Finley Helm making a sweet sliding save last in the game, while Olivia Hall was constantly in the thick of things, fighting for every loose ball until the final whistle.

Olivia Hall is hailed by her fan club.

Crosspoint Christian has achieved the lofty heights Coupeville wants to reach.

The Wildcats are a longstanding girls’ soccer power, with three state titles and a pair of 3rd place finishes to their credit.

So, while the very-young Wolves wanted a win Saturday in Bremerton, the fact they played their hosts almost even in a 1-0 loss while missing key starters, is a huge positive.

“Tough back and forth game,” said Coupeville assistant coach Jerry Helm. “Lot of good lessons and take aways, had our opportunities, just couldn’t find the net.”

The non-conference loss drops CHS to 3-3-2 on the season, while Crosspoint gets to 6-2, and now Jasmine Ader’s band of plucky pitch warriors turns their attention back to conference competition.

Coupeville hosts Lopez Island Monday at 3:00 PM, kicking off the second half of games in Northwest 2B/1B League play, and it will be a prime opportunity for some sweet revenge.

The Wolves and Lobos battled to a 2-2 tie in the season opener.

A win at Mickey Clark Field would boost Coupeville’s run at snagging a playoff berth in just its second season back after the program was shut down two years due to a lack of players.

Now the Wolves have a deep roster, anchored by a substantial amount of 8th and 9th graders, and are looking to keep the positive vibes flowing.

Taylor Marrs (22) and Co. are on the rise.

These are the games that help build character for a young team on the brink of greatness.

They sting in the moment, but down the road, the chances are great the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad will look back and see where they persevered through adversity and came to prosper because of it.

Coming off a heartbreaking tie against La Conner, in which the Braves punched in the tying goal in stoppage time while getting away with roughing up Coupeville’s goaltender, Wednesday’s trip to Friday Harbor also ended with a sucker punch.

This time out, the host Wolverines snapped a tie with a goal (again in stoppage time), followed a half second later by the ref’s whistle, handing CHS a 2-1 loss.

The defeat drops Coupeville to 2-2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-2-2 overall, and for the moment, drops Jasmine Ader’s booters into fourth place in the seven-team conference.

Mount Vernon Christian (5-0-0 for 15 points) sits atop the standings, followed by Lopez Island (3-2-1 for 10 points), Friday Harbor (3-2-0 for nine points) and the Wolves (eight points).

La Conner (2-1-1 for seven points), Providence Classical Christian (1-4-0 for three points), and Orcas Island (0-5-0 for zero points) round out things.

Coupeville, a very-young team which is currently without injured veterans Tamsin Ward and Taylor Marrs, still has six league games left to play, however, including a rematch with Friday Harbor in the regular season finale.

First though the Wolves head to Bremerton Saturday for a non-conference clash with Crosspoint Christian, which sits at 5-2.

Playing on Friday Harbor, CHS got its score from freshman Hazel Goldman, who knocked in her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

That held up almost until the end, but a few missed opportunities in the final minutes made life tough for the Wolves.

Coupeville had multiple corner kicks as the clock ticked away, but despite having all the momentum, barely missed on nailing what would likely have been a game-winning goal.

With the clock frozen, Friday Harbor launched one final fast break and slid in the dagger.

“A hard-fought game with small mistakes that cost us big,” said CHS assistant coach Jerry Helm. “Lots of good take aways, just need to finish.”

It was a barn burner which ended with a bit of a thud.

Capping a game which saw numerous lead changes, and a hail of goals, visiting La Conner slipped in a disputed score in stoppage time Thursday to eke out a 4-4 tie with the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad.

The split decision leaves the Wolves at 2-1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-1-2 overall, with road games against Friday Harbor and Crosspoint Christian up next on the schedule.

While a win would have kept Coupeville in first place in the NWL, the tie, captured while missing two key starters, means Jasmine Ader’s squad is still firmly in the race for the crown.

Mount Vernon Christian (3-0-0 for nine points) tops the seven-team league, with Coupeville (2-1-2 for eight points), Lopez Island (2-1-1 for seven points), and Friday Harbor (2-2-0 for six points) hot on the trail of the Hurricanes.

La Conner (1-1-1 for four points), Providence Classical Christian (1-2-0 for three points), and Orcas Island (0-4 for zippo) round out the standings.

Thursday’s rumble at Mickey Clark Field featured six goals in a torrid first half.

Wolf freshman Hazel Goldman broke the seal on the net eight-and-a-half minutes into play, punching in a shot while lurking in a pack waging war in front of the goal.

La Conner responded with scores off of back-to-back breakaways, but Goldman wasn’t having it, hitting paydirt for the second time in the game’s 22nd minute to knot things back up.

With both teams crashing hard at the net, peppering the goaltenders with frequent shots, two more scoring strikes got through before the halftime break.

The Braves snuck back ahead at 3-2, before Paige Hill redirected a ball past the netminder in the 34th minute.

Her score came on a play set up by a corner kick by Lyla Grose, with the ball ricocheting off of Lucy Schisel’s foot and a handful of defenders before Hill proved to be in the right place at the right time.

The refs gave La Conner the first of two big breaks when they decided an accidental collision warranted handing the visitors a penalty kick right before the break.

Sanity was restored, however, as the Braves shooter pulled the ball badly to the left, failing to take advantage of her gift-wrapped present.

Sophia Greene (17) and Co. make a tough foe for anyone.

With the game knotted at 3-3, Coupeville jumped out to the advantage quickly when play began in the second half.

Less than a minute into play, Olivia Hall slid past two rivals, banking home a slap shot from the left side to give CHS the lead for the first time since Goldman’s opening goal.

And the 4-3 lead almost held up, as Coupeville’s defense completely shut down the fleet footed La Conner shooters who had gotten loose in the first half.

No big breakaways, no long runs, and very few shots for Wolf goalie Finley Helm to corral, until…

Just as the game slipped into stoppage time — that Twilight Zone-style “maybe it’s two minutes, maybe it’s not” period — La Conner popped a desperation shot at the net.

Helm blocked the incoming ball, then got whacked like a victim in a Mafia movie, bodies crunching, and the ball squirting free and into the back of the net.

For the longest time, no one, including the refs, seemed to know whether the goal would stand, or be waved off.

But, after a conversation in the corner of the field between the officials (but not their MIA seeing-eye dog), the score stood, with mere seconds left to play.

Coupeville tried to push downfield for the game-winner, but time ran out on the attack, and with no overtime or penalty kick shootouts being allowed in regular season games this season, the final tally stood at 4-4.

The Wolves get a second crack at the Braves October 20, however, and departed the field heads held high.

They also, just six games into a 15-game regular season campaign, set a program high water mark.

Hill became the 10th different Wolf girl to net a goal this season, allowing the 2026 team to already break a tie with the 2015 and 2017 squads, who each saw nine players score.

CHS has piled up 19 goals thus far:

Hazel Goldman – 3
Ariella Lee-Spaulding – 3
Lucy Schisel – 3
Lyla Grose – 2
Olivia Hall – 2
Lillian Ketterling – 2
Scarlet Barnes – 1
Paige Hill – 1
Bella Sandlin – 1
Bettie Woolworth – 1
