Netters swing by Title Town

Time to hoist another tile.

The Coupeville High School girls tennis team has the most league titles of any sport played at the school, and now coach Ken Stange and Co. can add a new one.

Bouncing host Friday Harbor 5-0 Monday afternoon, the Wolves improved to 4-0 during this pandemic-shortened season, officially clinching the Northwest 2B/1B League crown.

With two matches left in their six-match rumble royal, Coupeville and Friday Harbor — the only NWL schools to play the net game — meet again March 26 and 29.

The first of those remaining matches, set for this Friday on Whidbey Island, is Senior Night for the Wolves.

Monday, the highlight came courtesy of Helen Strelow, who was making her debut as a singles player.

The CHS sophomore split the first two sets of her match, before falling behind 4-1 in the deciding frame.

At that point, Strelow made Stange’s heart soar, reaching down deep to run off five straight games en route to a 6-4 win in the third set.

Also coming up big was Coupeville’s #3 doubles duo, Noelle Daigneault and Sophie Martin, who also pulled out a three-set victory to keep the Wolves flawless on the season.

On their way to 4-0 as a team, the CHS netters have combined to go 20-0 in varsity matches.

Life is sweet for league leaders

Still the frontrunners.

When you tally up the three spring sports which keep win/loss records, one school in the Northwest 2B/1B League remains far out in front.

That would be Coupeville, which has as many wins (11) as the next two schools combined.

The Wolves have undefeated, first-place softball and girls tennis teams, while baseball is solidly in second-place.

That puts CHS ahead of Friday Harbor, which has six wins and holds first-place in baseball, and Darrington, with five wins.

Mount Vernon Christian (2) and Orcas Island (1) are on the board, while Concrete and La Conner are still searching for that elusive first win of spring.

The week ahead offers a bevy of games for Coupeville teams, though nothing is certain in the Age of Coronavirus.

Wolf softball is set to travel to Orcas Tuesday for a doubleheader, before a side trip to Concrete Friday and a home game against Darrington Saturday.

That last game is Senior Night for the CHS sluggers.

Meanwhile, baseball also gets a doubleheader at Orcas Tuesday, then is off for a week.

Wolf tennis plays matches four and five in its six-match death rumble with Friday Harbor, the only other NWL school to favor the net game.

Monday, the match is in Friday Harbor, while Friday the Wolf net crew is at home for its Senior Night festivities.

Rounding out the schedule is CHS track and field, which travels Thursday to Mount Vernon for a league meet.

Wolf netters in peak form

There was a little bit of everything.

Big routs, tense back-and-forth affairs, and a handful of debuts.

When it was all over Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team walked away with a 5-0 win over visiting Friday Harbor, and at least a share of a league title.

CHS is 3-0 at the halfway point of this pandemic-shortened season, with all its matches coming against the Wolverines, who rep the only other school in the Northwest 2B/1B League to play tennis.

The two squads face off again March 22, when the Wolves travel to Friday Harbor.

A win there — and Coupeville is 15-0 in varsity matches this season — and you can officially add another league title banner to the collection in the CHS gym.

While Wednesday’s match finished decisively in favor of Coupeville, their arch-rivals put up a spirited fight.

The match of the day came at first singles, with Coupeville ace Abby Mulholland dueling with Friday Harbor’s talented top gun, Allie Fleming.

After a back-and-forth battle, Fleming claimed the first set 6-4, but couldn’t quite hold on to claim the full victory.

Mulholland, utilizing her height advantage, begin to spend more time at the net, dominating by spraying overhead winners to all the nooks and crannies of the court.

Fleming scrambled to the last point, showing a nice touch for keeping rallies going, but was eventually undone by Mulholland, who mixed in some sparkling drop shots as well as she claimed the final sets 6-2 and 6-0.

She wasn’t the only Wolf to bring their A-game, as Jaimee Masters and Emily Fiedler made for a formidable #1 doubles duo.

The two have different playing styles — Fiedler moves like a dancer on the court, while Masters unleashes blistering power off both her serves and her net game — but they mesh together fairly flawlessly.

Wednesday’s match also marked the high school tennis debuts of three younger Wolves, with Helen Strelow, Hayley Thomas, and Nozomi Hagihara taking the court for the first time this season.

All three showed potential, with Strelow a particular standout, teaming with Noelle Daigneault to win at the varsity level.

Wolves killin’ it

It’s a strong start.

After a year-plus off because of the pandemic, plus a switch from 1A to 2B and a move to the Northwest League, Coupeville High School athletic teams have come out of the gate hot.

When you look at the three spring sports which tabulate win/loss records, the Wolves have already nabbed seven wins, with runner-ups Friday Harbor (4) and Darrington (3) on their heels.

La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island, and Concrete are all still hunting their first victory.

It’s still early of course, but with COVID shortening each sports season this school year, we’re also already a chunk into the schedule.

After playing entirely at home to start the spring, Coupeville hits the road this coming week.

Baseball plays at Darrington Tuesday and Friday Harbor on Friday, while softball matches those games, then tosses in a trip to Concrete Saturday.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls tennis nabs the only home event of the week, hosting Friday Harbor Wednesday, with CHS track traveling to La Conner Thursday.

Coupeville High School tennis players returned to competition for the first time since 2019, rolling to a big win at home Monday afternoon.
