Netters pull double duty in Granite

One more road trip.

Making their final trek of the season as a complete team Monday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team battled it out with Granite Falls.

While the host Tigers swept the doubles matches to escape with a 3-2 victory in the official varsity portion of the rumble, the Wolves earned a 6-6 split overall.

With everyone in action for CHS playing two matches, the first round consisted of pro sets to eight points, with the second round a regular set to six.

The Wolves have one more regular season match on their schedule, hosting Friday Harbor Wednesday at 3:30 PM.

It’s Senior Night, with netters Ember Light and Delanie Lewis being honored.

After that, Coupeville sends two singles players and two doubles teams to the District 1/2 tournament May 15 in Seattle.

The winners of that event qualify for the state meet May 23-24 in Yakima.

Spring teams enter stretch run

Bring out the roses.

With the last week of the regular season upon us, the coming days will feature Senior Night festivities for three of four Coupeville High School spring sports teams.

Wolf girls’ tennis celebrates Wednesday as it hosts Friday Harbor.

That’ll be the second and final match of the week for the netters, who kick things off by traveling Monday to Granite Falls.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball squad caps its regular season run at home Tuesday with a rumble against Granite Falls as well.

For Wolf baseball, the final series features a road trip to Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, followed by Senior Night at home Thursday afternoon.

And while CHS track and field has already honored its seniors, the team stays busy, competing at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Wednesday in La Conner.

Wolf singles aces stay undefeated

Pick a town, and they win.

Whether playing at home or on the road this season, Coupeville High School netters Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller have been perfect.

And that continued Wednesday, as both hardcourt aces won in straight sets while playing on Friday Harbor in a Northwest 2B/1B League match.

The host Wolverines did escape with a 3-2 match victory after sweeping the doubles portion of the festivities, clinching the league title.

But the big story remains the undefeated run by Coupeville’s singles players as they head into the final matches of the regular season.

The Wolves travel to Granite Falls Monday, May 5, before hosting Friday Harbor two days later for Senior Night.

After that, it’s on to the postseason for Stuurmans, Miller, and associates.

“Everyone played exceptionally well”

“Everyone played exceptionally well and showed real determination on the court.”

Playing under sunny skies on the prairie Friday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team held its own with its ritzy private school rival, battling to a 3-3 tie with The Bush School in varsity action.

The Wolves swept all three singles matches, with Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller remaining unbeaten on the season.

“Our singles players continue to dominate on the court,” said CHS coach Starla Seal.

“They delivered impressive performances this week, showing grit, smart play, and strong court presence.

“Their focus and consistency were key to our team’s success, and we’re proud of the strength they show on court.”

While The Bush School was able to pull out victories in the doubles matches, Coupeville’s coaches were pleased with the effort they saw from their players.

“A special shoutout to the Light sisters (Ember and Mila), who brought great energy and teamwork in their doubles match,” Seal said.

“Their fight and chemistry were clear, and we’re excited to see what they bring to the next match!”

The match marked the return of Sofia Phay from an injury, and she reunited with Kauri Hamilton as if the duo had never been apart.

“Their teamwork and trust in one another create a solid foundation, allowing them to stay composed under pressure and adapt well mid-match,” Seal said.

“It’s clear they enjoy playing together, and their chemistry has become a real asset to the team.”

Two months, one focus

April turns into May next week, and the push for the finish line ramps up.

High school sports end May 31 in the state of Washington, with the final state championships action going down that day in several sports.

As we creep into the first week of a new, and final month, Coupeville High School sports teams will be busy.

Girls’ tennis travels to Friday Harbor for a conference rumble Wednesday, while track and field spends the week prepping for the postseason, which begins the following week.

Meanwhile, Wolf baseball and softball each have three games on the slate.

Both teams host Orcas Island Tuesday, before bouncing island-to-island for a rematch with the Vikings Thursday.

Wrapping up things are non-conference games at South Whidbey, with softball heading to Langley Friday and baseball making the trek Saturday.
