Two months, one focus

April turns into May next week, and the push for the finish line ramps up.

High school sports end May 31 in the state of Washington, with the final state championships action going down that day in several sports.

As we creep into the first week of a new, and final month, Coupeville High School sports teams will be busy.

Girls’ tennis travels to Friday Harbor for a conference rumble Wednesday, while track and field spends the week prepping for the postseason, which begins the following week.

Meanwhile, Wolf baseball and softball each have three games on the slate.

Both teams host Orcas Island Tuesday, before bouncing island-to-island for a rematch with the Vikings Thursday.

Wrapping up things are non-conference games at South Whidbey, with softball heading to Langley Friday and baseball making the trek Saturday.

As everyone ramps up, a look at where win/loss records sit through April 27:

Doubly delightful day for netters

Shuffle the lineup, shuffle the results.

Coupeville and Granite Falls coaches agreed to play Wednesday’s non-conference girls’ tennis match with an emphasis on doubles action, and the Wolves came away with their first team win of the season.

The Tigers, who were playing host, requested that CHS singles players be paired with newer teammates and play pro sets, creating a different learning experience.

“Mashed up the doubles teams and brought some doubles teams back together,” said CHS coach Starla Seal. “Experienced players could act as a guide for the new players.

“Overall, it was a good match.”

With the action moving along at a good clip, the teams even had time to play two singles matches at the end, with Wolf netters Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller remaining undefeated on the campaign.

Coupeville will be back at home Friday, hosting The Bush School in a non-league tilt — the team’s second-to-last home rumble of the spring.

Busy week boasts home-heavy schedule

They’re going to be double-dipping.

Both Coupeville High School softball and baseball have a pair of home doubleheaders on the schedule this coming week, providing ample opportunity for local fans to watch the Wolves in action.

Concrete slides into Cow Town Tuesday for the first of the twin bills, while Forks makes the long journey to the island Saturday.

In between, the Wolf JV softball team will nab its first game of the season Thursday, with Oak Harbor popping in for a game.

CHS track and field is also at home Saturday, hosting the Coupeville Classic Invite, while Wolf girls’ tennis is the lone team to spend any time listening to the bus wheels go round and round.

The netters are slated to travel to Granite Falls Wednesday, before hosting The Bush School Friday afternoon.

Hardcourt aces show great promise

There’s more to the story than the win/loss record.

While it’s true the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad is 0-7 on the season after being nipped 3-2 Friday afternoon by visiting Friday Harbor, that’s not a complete reflection of how the Wolves have been playing.

A team comprised almost completely of younger players and netters new to the game, and one which has dodged a series of injuries, is virtually a shot or two away from being 7-0.

Six of those seven team losses have been by a 3-2 score, with the only one which wasn’t being 3-1 after a singles match was suspended by injury.

As Coupeville rebuilds its program after scraping together a partial roster a season ago, the present, and the future, are much brighter.

And one of the brightest spots is first-year player Dahlia Miller, the lone Wolf to have gone 7-0 this season.

She’s won 13 of 14 sets and been a consistent winner whether playing at #1 or #2 singles.

Friday, with Tenley Stuurmans missing in action, Miller moved to the top of the order and once again delivered, as did Brynn Parker, who slid into the #2 slot.

“It was great!” said CHS coach Starla Seal. “Dahlia and Brynn played well, played quickly, and they were focused and had some beautiful rallies.”

Miller took down a Friday Harbor player, Nikki Cole Clark, who battled at the district tourney last season, which bodes well for this year’s postseason run.

While Coupeville couldn’t get that elusive third win, dropping all three doubles clashes, their duos held up well under pressure.

“Our doubles (teams) played very nicely, great rallies,” Seal said.

“Delanie (Lewis) and Miles (Gerber) showed great promise and I’m very happy with how all of the girls played!”

Coupeville now hits the road for three of its next four matches before closing the regular season at home May 7 with Senior Night.

Young netters swing deadly rackets

It’s a familiar pattern.

Tuesday’s home Coupeville High School girls’ tennis match played out almost identically to all the ones which have come before this season.

The Wolves swept the varsity singles matches, with Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller both remaining undefeated.

“Dahlia finished her match quickly and played very consistently,” said CHS coach Starla Seal.

But visiting King’s ultimately bounced back to claim the doubles bouts, escaping with a narrow 3-2 win in the non-conference rumble.

Up next for the Wolves is another home match Friday, this time with Northwest 2B/1B League rival Friday Harbor on the slate.

Start time is 3:30 PM.
