He had a nice run.

Coupeville High School junior Henry Wynn capped his first season as a cross country runner Saturday, finishing 26th at the Westside Classic in Tacoma.

The event, run at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course, was the final step before the state meet.

Only one team and the top seven harriers from other teams punched their ticket, leaving Wynn on the outside looking in.

Charles Wright Academy edged Port Townsend for the team title, while Jared Donnel of Bellevue Christian won the individual crown.

Wynn, who was one of just two Wolves running this season, covered the 5,000 meter course in 20:00.1, finishing ahead of 18 rival runners.

Coupeville doesn’t have an active cross country program, so Wynn and sophomore Danny Conlisk trained and traveled with South Whidbey this year, then split with the Falcons once the postseason started.

Conlisk, who has been battling an Achilles tendon injury, wasn’t able to run Saturday, but both Wolves are expected to return next season.

Pick up enough interest from other runners and there’s even an outside chance CHS could be inspired to restart its program, which has a distinguished history including two individual state champs in Nastasha Bamberger (1985) and Tyler King (2010).

The Wolves are on their own journey now.

After training and traveling with South Whidbey this season, Coupeville High School harriers Danny Conlisk and Henry Wynn have parted ways with the Falcons.

After competing against Cascade Conference runners until now, the two-man Wolf team introduced themselves to a new batch of foes Thursday at the Olympic League Cross Country Championships in Sequim.

Unfortunately, only one of the two Wolves made it through warm-ups.

Conlisk, who has been bothered by an Achilles tendon injury, was scratched and brought his sophomore campaign to an end.

Wynn, a junior, covered the 5,000 meter course at The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in 18 minutes, 47.47 seconds, finishing 35th in a field of 63 runners.

Andrew Simon of 2A Kingston won the race in 16:12.77 while Port Townsend’s Brennan LaBrie (9th in 17:34.26) was the top 1A male finisher.

All 11 Olympic League schools (seven 2A teams and Coupeville’s fellow 1A rivals Chimacum, Klahowya and Port Townsend) were joined by 1B Clallum Bay.

Wynn returns to action Oct. 29 when he runs at the district meet in Tacoma.

In that race, he will face off only with 1A runners, with the top team and the seven best individual finishers not on the championship team advancing to state.

CHS, while having a proud, award-heavy cross country tradition — including state champs in Natasha Bamberger (1985) and Tyler King (2010) — doesn’t currently have an active harrier program of its own.

Henry Wynn was truly the Lone Wolf Thursday.

With Coupeville High School running buddy Danny Conlisk sidelined with a hurting Achilles tendon, Wynn wrapped up cross country’s regular season with a 23rd-place finish at a four-team meet in Shoreline.

He motored across the line in 14 minutes, 50.16 seconds, while Cedarcrest junior Ben Benson won the King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run in 13:01.78.

There were 53 runners in the 2.4 mile boys race and 26 in the girls race, with Cedarcrest winning both team titles.

Wynn and Conlisk have been training and traveling with South Whidbey, since CHS doesn’t have an active cross country program.

The duo split from the Falcons now, though, and head to Sequim Oct. 20 for the Olympic League Championships.

While there, they’ll compete with runners from 1A schools Chimacum, Port Townsend and Klahowya, as well as the league’s eight 2A schools.

After that comes districts Oct. 29 and (if they qualify) state Nov. 5.

Every day is a learning experience.

As Coupeville High School runners Henry Wynn and Danny Conlisk wade through their first cross country season, each meet is unique.

Thursday, the two Wolves found themselves in Langley for a Cascade Conference meet which drew 147 runners (99 on the boys side).

Despite having put in a hard leg work out in PE shortly before running (and Conlisk’s shoelace coming untied mid-race), the duo acquitted themselves quite nicely.

Wynn finished 30th in 19 minutes, 15.18 seconds, while Conslisk was half a step back in 31st (19:15.76).

Ian Fay, a senior from 2A Cedarcrest, won the race in 16:43.60, beating the field by nearly 30 seconds.

Wynn, a junior, and Conlisk, a sophomore, train and travel with South Whidbey, as Coupeville doesn’t have its own cross country program.

They have one regular-season meet left (Oct. 13), then break from the Falcons when the postseason starts.

Saturdays are for PRs.

Running in the second cross country race of their prep careers, Coupeville High School harriers Henry Wynn and Danny Conslisk both shaved considerable time off their best efforts.

The duo, who train and travel with South Whidbey, but compete as Wolves, were running at the mega-huge Bellevue Cross Country Invitational in Sammamish.

On a day when seven separate boys races were run, Coupeville’s fleet-footed pair were entered in the JV race.

Wynn finished 63rd in a field of 214 runners, covering the 5,000 meter course in 19 minutes, 5.30 seconds.

That was a full 1:12 better than his previous best for the CHS junior.

His running mate, a sophomore, crossed the line in 19:48 flat, claiming 101st.

That was a crisp 31 seconds better than Conlisk’s first race.

Both Wolves can also say, thanks to a quirk, that they have now beaten Tyler King in a cross country race.

Now, to be honest, it’s not the guy with that name who won a state 1A cross country title in 2010 while capping his remarkable career at Coupeville.

Instead, it’s a South Whidbey freshman who bears the same moniker and was 207th on this day.

The five Falcons who joined Wynn and Conlisk in Bellevue finished 80th (Michael Cepowski), 105th (Andrew Curtis), 201st (Ethan Petty), 207th (King) and 211th (Joe Davies).
