He’s still wheelin’ and dealin’ on the hardwood.

Coupeville High School grad Caleb Meyer is in his second season of playing basketball at Skagit Valley College, with the Cardinals off to a perfect start.

SVC sits at 5-0 after shredding Big Bend 90-56 Sunday afternoon.

Next up is a home game Nov. 30 against Douglas College of British Columbia, then a trip to Port Angeles Dec. 2-3 for the Pirate Classic.

Meyer has played in all five games for Skagit, racking up four points, four assists, three steals, a rebound and six tooth-rattling fouls.

During his time in Coupeville, McKenzie’s younger brother helped lead Wolf boys’ basketball to its best season in three decades-plus during his senior campaign.

CHS, a 2B school, went 16-0 during the regular season, stunned 3A Oak Harbor to rule Whidbey, won a league title, and played two games at the state tourney.

Caleb Meyer also earned a 2nd place medal in the 4 x 100 at the state track and field championships.

They’ll rest later.

Eight Coupeville girls spent Sunday and Monday taking part in the NW Juniors MLK Weekend Tournament at Shoreline College.

Three of those Wolves — Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, and Katie Marti — travelled to Neah Bay Saturday for a high school basketball game, then turned around and shot off to join their fellow spikers.

Topping things off, the trio played in four matches, then returned to Whidbey Island Monday in time to make it to basketball practice.

After their departure, the remaining eight members of the Whidbey Volleyball Club U18 squad played a final match, with the team finishing 3rd at the eight-team tourney.

The local spikers won two of three matches Sunday, and split their bouts Monday, playing 11 sets across five action-packed matches.

“There were some great sets, super exciting,” said mom Jennifer Marzocca.

Along with Marti, Farris, and Heaton, the U18 squad includes Coupeville’s Lucy Tenore, Grey Peabody, Taylor Brotemarkle, Chloe Marzocca, and Taygin Jump.

Wolf sophomore Madison McMillan is also on the team but was unable to make it to this event.

Rounding out the roster are four other players, led by Clara Juriaans of South Whidbey.

Oak Harbor is represented by Keira Newkirk, Alexia Sanchez, and Johanna Daggett.

Only one team is going East.

Both Coupeville High School varsity basketball squads were scheduled to play in holiday tournaments this week, but the Wolf girls have changed their plans.

Citing a number of nagging injuries, Megan Richter’s team will stay home and rest up, instead of traveling to Ellensburg.

The Wolf boys are still scheduled to get on the bus Monday for a trip to Leavenworth, where Cascade High School will host a four-team rumble.

Brad Sherman’s squad faces Kittitas Tuesday, then plays either Cascade or Manson the next day.

The Wolf girls were set to play Chelan Tuesday, then face off with either Sultan or tourney host Kittitas Wednesday.

Instead, the Wolves will take some extra time to get right before action gets hot and heavy in the new year.

“We should all be healed up and ready to go by league,” Richter said.

Coupeville’s varsity girls’ team, which is 3-3 on the season, kicks off 2023 with four-straight home games.

The Wolves host Granite Falls Jan. 4 for a non-conference tilt, then play Northwest 2B/1B League rivals Orcas Island (Jan. 6), Mount Vernon Christian (Jan. 10), and Darrington (Jan. 13).
