Glover unleashes on Falcons

It took less than 48 hours to get some sweet, sweet revenge.

Playing for the second time in three days, the Coupeville High School baseball team toppled visiting South Whidbey 8-4 Wednesday, earning a season split in JV games between the next-door neighbors.

It was a nice bounce back for the Wolves after they fell 6-3 Monday to the Falcons.

CHS doesn’t have a complete nine-man JV roster, so a couple of different younger varsity players saw action in each rumble, and one of them was the big star Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore slugger Camden Glover, who didn’t play Monday, reached base four times, drove home four runs, and was a holy terror every time he had a bat in his hand or was let loose on the basepaths.

Toss in strong work on the mound by the duo of Landon Roberts and Jack Farrell, who combined for nine strikeouts, and South Whidbey spent much of the day in a hole.

The Falcons actually led, briefly, at 1-0, thanks to a walk and a Wolf error, but then Coupeville surged ahead for good.

The Wolves knotted the score at 1-1 thanks to an RBI single from Glover, then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the third to snatch the lead for good.

Roberts bashed a single to get things going, with Carson Grove walking, before Glover (who else?) smoked a two-run double to left field.

The Falcons hung tough, slicing the lead down to 4-3, but the Wolves had a solid response at every turn.

Glover unleashed his third base knock of the game in the bottom of the fifth, plating two more runs, then came in to score on an error.

Coupeville’s final run featured Easton Green singling, scooting to second on a Falcon error, stealing third, then sprinting home on an RBI groundout off of the bat of Dylan Robinett.

Seven of the 11 Wolves to see action Wednesday reached base, while Aidyn McDermott, Nathan Niewald, Jayden Little, and Farrell put together solid at-bats as well.

Wolves run and gun, Falcons swoon

Cole White bleeds, Coupeville leads.

Whether it’s a full-blown geyser or a little scratch, when the pale prairie point guard displays even a little bit of red, the Wolf varsity boys’ basketball squad usually finds inspiration.

Wednesday night was no different, as White got dinged (but just a bit) and CHS romped to a 68-42 win over visiting South Whidbey.

The non-conference Island rivalry victory lifts Coupeville to 13-4 heading into a major matchup Saturday in Puyallup against always-dangerous Chief Leschi.

The Wolves prepped for their clash with the Warriors, who are also 13-4, by picking apart their next-door neighbors.

Jumping on the Falcons early, Coupeville mixed four first-quarter three-balls from Logan Downes with a series of breakaway buckets to stake themselves to a 26-8 lead at the first break.

South Whidbey was down just 7-6 midway through the opening quarter, before White spurred his team into action.

First, he collected an offensive charge on a rumbling, stumbling Falcon, before immediately stinging his rivals at the other end of the court on a sweet lil’ runner in the paint.

After that it was Downes ripping off treys like he was a World War II machine gunner, spraying bullets everywhere, with almost all of them hitting their target.

Coupeville continued to pour it on in the second frame, opening things on a torrid 11-2 run to stretch the lead all the way out to 37-10.

The Falcons had no answer for the Wolves, as Downes continued to splash down bombs from behind the arc, while White and Chase Anderson ran laps around their defenders, outsprinting them end to end on breakaways.

A three-ball from Ryan Blouin shoved the advantage out to 28 points, before the visitors (slightly) carved things down to trail “just” 40-18 at the half.

The treys kept dropping, and the net kept popping, as the third quarter played out, with Downes (twice), Nick Guay, and Blouin connecting as CHS turned the game into a blowout at 62-30 heading into the fourth.

With the starters having long since departed to chill on the sideline, Wolf bench players wrapped things up.

Coupeville’s last bucket might have been its best, with sophomore swing player Aiden O’Neill slashing around the defense to convert a three-point play the hard way.

South Whidbey, which had been outscored 30-0 from the three-point line, finally got one to drop as the final buzzer sounded, but it was (way) too little, (way) too late.

Downes paced all scorers with 29 points, hitting seven treys, and becomes the first Wolf boy to compile two 400+ point seasons.

He threw down 554 points as a junior, and now has 416 in his final go-around, the sixth-best single-season total for a CHS boy across 107 seasons.

White knocked down 12 in support, with Anderson (10), Guay (7), Blouin (6), O’Neill (3), and Hurlee Bronec (1) also tallying points.

Anderson and Blouin reached personal milestones in the win, with the former cracking the 200-point club and the latter joining the 150-point club.

William Davidson, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Mikey Robinett, Hunter Bronec, Zane Oldenstadt, and Timothy Nitta also saw floor time as the Class of 2024 improved to 51-19 as varsity hoops players.

Wolf JV keeps scoreboard jumpin’

Sometimes you’re the meat and sometimes you’re the grinder.

Wednesday night it was Coupeville’s turn to do the chopping and shredding, as its JV boys’ basketball team torched visiting South Whidbey 73-4.

And no, that’s not a misprint.

The non-conference win against their next-door neighbor lifts the Wolves to 11-2 on the season heading into a road trip Saturday to play Chief Leschi.

While Wednesday’s score might sound bad, it could have been far, far worse.

With Coupeville’s varsity featuring nine seniors, its second unit is filled to the brim with players who in other years would already be playing in the marquee games.

Facing a scrappy, but outmatched Falcon squad, the Wolves threw down the gauntlet early, then did everything possible to give their foes a good rumble while not running up the score unnecessarily.

Coupeville’s starters only played 10 minutes, with most of the game devoted to giving CHS freshmen the run of the floor.

Still, the Wolf starters, even with Johnny Porter in street clothes with an injury, are a potent bunch and they blew out to a 41-0 lead by the first break.

Jack Porter and Camden Glover controlled the boards, using their long arms to yank down rebounds and turn them into second-chance buckets, while Malachi Somes, Aiden O’Neill, and Landon Roberts went on a rampage of backcourt steals.

The Wolf lead eventually got up to 50-0 after a pair of Jayden McManus buckets wrapped around a three-ball from Davin Houston, before South Whidbey finally broke through.

Drew Staats slipped a free throw through the net with 3:37 to play in the half to get the Falcons on the board, while Elias Wilke nailed a three-ball from the right side for his team’s lone field goal.

After that, it was all Coupeville, all the time, as the Wolves pushed the lead to 60-4 at the half, before coasting in for the win while a running clock kept things hoppin’ in the second half.

Ten of the 11 Wolves to see action scored, with Jack Porter (14), Somes (11), and Glover (10) hitting double digits.

McManus (9), Houston (9), Riley Lawless (6), O’Neill (6), Roberts (4), Sage Arends (2), and Makai Myles (2) also tallied points, while Easton Green spent the night setting up his teammates with crisp passes.

Same song, slightly different verse

It was a very pleasant reunion.

For Coupeville, that is. Less so for South Whidbey.

Clashing in a series of middle school boys’ basketball games for the second time in as many days, the Wolves and Falcons went bucket-for-bucket Tuesday afternoon in Langley.

And, just as had happened the day before back in Cow Town, it was the hoops stars in red and black who came out ahead.

Monday the Coupeville hardwood squad got the sweep in a three-game set, while a day later the Falcons scratched out a win in the middle contest.

Now it’s on to Lakewood Wednesday for the season finale.

How Tuesday’s Island rivalry matchup played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville rained down pain from behind the arc, hitting six three-balls to spark a 46-31 win.

Four different Wolves nailed a three-ball, with Kamden Ratcliff and Nick Laska connecting twice.

Chayse Van Velkinburgh and Nathan Niewald each added a trey as CMS roared to its second win of the season.

Laska led all scorers with 16, while Van Velkinburgh knocked down 13.

Carson Grove (8), Ratcliff (6), and Niewald (3) rounded out the scoring, with Calvin Kappes, Khanor Jump, and Jackson Sollars providing defensive heat for the Wolves.

 

Level 2:

South Whidbey eked out a bit of revenge, slipping away with a 16-14 win in a nailbiter.

Diesel Eck was Coupeville’s primary offensive weapon, dropping eight points on the day, with Roger Merino-Martinez adding four and River Simpson banking in a fourth-quarter bucket.

Lincoln Wagner, Xander Beaman, Jayden Little, Jonah Weyl, Trent Thule, Treyshawn Stewart, and Jump also action during the tense tussle.

 

Level 3:

Deacon Frost couldn’t be stopped.

The CMS 8th grader poured in 12 of his game-high 18 in the fourth quarter as Coupeville destroyed South Whidbey 33-6.

Beaman chipped in with 10, while Aiden Wheat hit a beautiful three-ball from deep and William Tierney flipped the net on a bucket.

Wagner, Jacob Lujan, Simpson, Maverick Walling, Mario Martinez, Johnathan Jacobsen, and Weyl rounded out the rotation for CMS coach Jaylen Nitta.

Winner, winner, Falcon dinner!

The spell is broken.

Playing at home for the final time this season Monday, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams went out with a bang.

Sweeping three wins from visiting South Whidbey, the Wolves fired the first shots in a two-day hoops extravaganza with their neighbors, while claiming their first victories of the season.

Now, during a frantic final week of hardwood action, the two schools will square off again Tuesday, this time in Langley.

That’s a makeup for earlier games postponed by a lack of refs.

After that comes the season finale against Lakewood, also on the road, and then the CMS boys hang up their jerseys for the season.

How Monday played out, on a day when I was babysitting and not in the CMS gym:

 

Level 1:

Wolf big man Nick Laska matched South Whidbey by himself as Coupeville drilled the Falcons 36-20.

The 8th grader, who leads all CMS players in scoring this season, scored in every quarter, racking up four, six, six, and four points on his way to a season high.

Chayse Van Velkinburgh tossed in 11, including hitting on a trio of three-balls, while Calvin Kappes (3) and Khanor Jump (2) rounded out the torrid offensive attack.

Kamden Ratcliff, Carson Grove, Nathan Niewald, and Jackson Sollars also saw floor time for the Wolves in the win.

 

Level 2:

Spreading out the offensive love between six players, Coupeville pulled out a 21-15 win.

Roger Merino-Martinez rippled the nets for a team-best six points, with Treyshawn Stewart adding five, including a three-ball.

Jump knocked down four, while Lincoln Wagner, Jayden Little, and River Simpson chipped in with a bucket apiece.

Xander Beaman, Diesel Eck, and Jonah Weyl rounded out the rotation for CMS coach RayLynn Ratcliff.

 

Level 3:

The biggest rout of the night came in the finale, as Coupeville romped to a 34-10 victory.

Wagner and Deacon Frost paced the Wolves, each tickling the twines for eight, with Johnathan Jacobsen backing them up with six.

Simpson (4), Aiden Wheat (2), Beaman (2), Jacob Lujan (2), and William Tierney (2) also scored, with Mario Martinez bringing the heat on defense.

It was the first points this season for Wheat, Frost, and Tierney, giving Coupeville 23 players who have scored through the first six games.
