“Jacki and Valen were on point!!”

They were the best all season, and nothing changed in the postseason.

Riding a one-two finish from singles players Jacki Ginnings and Valen Trujillo, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad swept to a team title Tuesday at the 1A Olympic League tourney.

The Wolf duo now advance to districts, which will be held at Charles Wright Academy May 20.

Only the winner from what will be a super-tough districts draw chock full of private school players advances to state this year.

“We will travel and we will fight,” said CHS coach Ken Stange.

Powered by Ginnings and Trujillo, Coupeville outpaced Klahowya 10-5 to capture the league team title. Chimacum (3) and Port Townsend (2) rounded out the field.

Klahowya and Chimacum each sent a doubles team on to districts, with the Wolves narrowly missing out on a spot.

Freshmen Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger took third, while Micky LeVine and Sydney Autio placed fourth.

“While we played well in doubles, we shined in singles, as we have all season long,” Stange said. “McKenzie nearly upended De Michelli. Jacki and Valen were on point.

“Valen had a bit of trouble in the opening round, playing against a soft hitter, but once she figured out how to generate her own pace, she was good to go,” he added. “Jacki rolled over everyone, until she met Valen in the final. She certainly had to earn her title.”

“Chimacum and Klahowya each had a strong doubles team. They were pretty dominant, especially Shania Rose,” Stange said. “She was certainly the day’s hardest hitter.

“All three of our teams stood their ground but were unable to overcome the pair of duos from our rival schools. Next year…”

The tourney brought an end to the careers of LeVine and the Luvera twins.

“The three seniors gave a combined eleven years to CHS tennis,” Stange said. “I’m grateful for all they’ve done.

“Over the last four years, those three have accounted for many wins and even more great memories,” he added. “They’ve left a positive mark on CHS and its team.”

Call ’em the comeback kids.

Storming back all day long Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team pulled off a 5-2 stunner over visiting Granite Falls to avenge an earlier season loss.

The victory, the team’s fourth straight, lifted the Wolves to 5-3 and, coming on the heels of a win over South Whidbey, was the second time CHS got payback after taking a defeat this season.

Not that it came easily, despite what the score might sound like.

Granite Falls actually took the first two matches completed and had the edge in numerous other contests as Wolf coach Ken Stange chewed his fingernails down to the quick.

Four of the five wins came from Wolves who trailed in their matches, and the team-wide comeback sparked Stange to go against conventional wisdom and give Player of the Match honors to his entire roster.

“One of the wildest tennis matches I’ve ever witnessed,” Stange said. “The victory was not secured until we pulled wins three and four off, within seconds of each other.

“It seemed that the odds were stacked against us today,” he added. “The seven matches unfolded in an exciting way, creating a tense atmosphere for anyone who was aware of the team score!”

After losses at #1 and #2 doubles, Coupeville rebounded with wins at #1 and #2 singles.

Wynter Thorne, filling in for Valen Trujillo at #2, dropped the first set in her match, then threw down a beat-down in the second and escaped with yet another tiebreaker win in the third.

“Her opponent was pesky and kept getting to everything. She didn’t hit too hard, but she was painting the lines,” Stange said. “Wynter steeled her focus and footwork and had just enough to edge past her foe.”

Playing alongside Thorne, top singles ace Jacki Ginnings gutted out an equally hard-fought win to give the Wolves new life, and her teammates responded with victories of their own.

The match was only decided when the final two doubles duos (Sydney Autio/Micky LeVine and Ivy Luvera/Mckenzie Meyer) pulled out third-set triumphs almost at the very same moment in time.

“Wow. I felt a whole array of feelings during today’s match,” Stange said.

Coming off a spectacular showing at a weekend tourney, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad kicked off a four-match week Monday with a resounding 6-1 drilling of former league rival Lakewood.

The non-conference victory, coming against a bigger 2A school, was the third straight win for the Wolves and came even with one of the squad’s most successful players, Valen Trujillo, MIA.

Now 4-3 overall, Coupeville puts its 2-0 Olympic League record on the line this afternoon when it hosts Klahowya at 4 PM.

With Trujillo (a crisp 7-2 on the season) out for the day, Wolf coach Ken Stange juggled the lineup a bit, employing his usual magic touch to produce a winning outcome in which almost all the matches (save the usual suspect) ended quickly and decisively.

“It turned out that the other team was also short handed, and that put us back in the driver’s seat,” he said. “Today’s tennis was straight and to the point.

“Most of the matches ended quickly, which was a good thing. Most of the girls are still recovering from Saturday’s marathon of tennis!”

1st Singles — Jacki Ginnings beat Christina Barber 7-5, 2-6, 10-7

The day’s longest match, at two-and-a-half hours, came from Ginnings, who seems to live for the epic brawls.

“Jacki persisted. Even though she lost the second set, she didn’t wear down. She wore her opponent down, though. After the match, Jacki looked like she could play another one. She continues to impress me.”

2nd Singles — Wynter Thorne beat Jillian Desond 6-1, 6-0

“Wynter hit the ball with such great depth, making it seem as if her opponent was stuck to the back fence. It was a quick affair, lasting just under an hour.”

3rd Singles — Ivy Luvera beat Taylor Nellenbach 6-4, 6-2

Making her varsity singles debut, Luvera delivered “a solid performance.”

1st Doubles — Payton Aparicio/Sage Renninger beat Maddie De Young/Alex Wolfe 6-3, 6-2

The freshmen knocked off a veteran duo and earned Player of the Match honors.

“This was a very exciting win for the entire team. They played aggressively and consistently, just the way their previous opponents have played. This is just the start. They’ve got 3.5 more years of high school tennis, and they will collect many wins along the way.”

2nd Doubles — McKenzie Bailey/Jazmine Franklin beat Gillian Romeis/Page Boersma 6-2, 6-4

“McKenzie and Jazmine picked up where they left off on Saturday, cruising to a nice win. They had a bit of trouble in the second set, but they seem to have a knack for finding a way to win. They are an exciting pair of juniors!”

3rd Doubles — Sydney Autio/Micky LeVine lost to Faith Dahl/teammate 4-6, 6-2, 5-1

4th Doubles — Ana Luvera/Mckenzie Meyer beat Kaitlyn Scarboro/Nadya Lopperova 6-0, 6-1

The Luvera sisters, winnin’ and grinnin’.

The league is theirs to take.

Soundly thrashing the combined forces of Chimacum and Port Townsend Friday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad sent a message.

A loud one.

The chase for a championship banner in the 1A Olympic League goes through Cow Town, and the Wolves are dead-set on bringing home the hardware.

Friday’s 6-1 shellacking, coming on the heels of an equally-impressive dismantling of Klahowya in late March, lifts Coupeville to 2-0 in league play, 3-3 overall.

The Wolves still have two more matches apiece against their league rivals, but the opening wins were emphatic enough to make Vegas pick CHS as a sure thing.

Varsity:

1st Singles — Jacki Ginnings beat Laura De Michelli 6-2, 6-3

Not even a Brazilian foreign exchange student could ruffle the super-smooth Ginnings.

“Her game is developing rapidly as she plays matches,” said Coupeville coach Ken Stange. “Now that she’s into her third year of playing, Jacki’s now able to focus on the little subtleties of the game. She’s a real technician on the court!”

2nd Singles — Valen Trujillo beat Casi Rowland 6-0, 6-2

“Valen continues to roll. She simply overpowered her opponent. Sometimes it can be difficult to play well against a player who hits with little pace and direction.

“Valen didn’t let her own level of play dropped; she applied constant pressure.”

3rd Singles — Wynter Thorne beat Amelia Breithaupt 6-2, 6-2

Formerly a doubles ace, Thorne made her debut as a singles player and was an immediate hit.

“Her style of play is well-suited for the singles court. She has a long swing that produced deep shots. Wynter did not disappoint.

“Wynter looked quite comfortable. She moved well, she kept the ball deep, and she made her opponent run everywhere. She was all smiles. Her play made me feel like a genius. Her play also made me very happy.”

1st Doubles — Payton Aparicio/Sage Renninger lost to Ray Maki/Sarah Allen 6-3, 6-4

Coupeville’s freshmen ran into a duo that has been playing together for four years, and experience edged youthful enthusiasm.

“Payton and Sage made a very skilled team earn the win. The Wolf frosh continue to grow, and they are staying positive. Their time will come!”

2nd Doubles — McKenzie Bailey/Jazmine Franklin beat Sophia Thurstan/Makenzie Richey 6-3, 6-1

“McKenzie and Jazmine were on top of their games today! They are a pair that does not present a weak link.”

3rd Doubles — Sydney Autio/Micky LeVine beat Holly Taylor/Alyssa Wolfe 6-3, 6-4

The duo started hot, hit a rough spot, then regrouped and finished strong, winning Player of the Match honors.

4th Doubles — Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera beat Amy Plastow/Tessa Rasmussen 6-1, 6-3

“They didn’t even think that they played well, but I assured them that they did. They played against players who played, well, non-traditionally.

“Ana and Ivy were able to overcome some odd bounces, and they sent their opponents packing.”

“We lost, but I can’t say that I’m dissatisfied with the results.”

Opening against possibly their toughest foe of the season Thursday, always-dangerous South Whidbey, the CHS girls’ tennis squad fell 5-2.

But the lessons learned are just as important as the final score for Wolf coach Ken Stange.

“The girls put up a solid fight. Overall, I was happy with our first match,” he said. “South Whidbey made an ideal first opponent, in my opinion, because they are probably one of the two most difficult teams we will face this season, Charles Wright Academy being the other.

“Now, our players can take the lessons from match one, and apply them for the next few practices, until we can test our skills again next Thursday (against league foe Klahowya).”

Coupeville’s initial wins came from #1 singles player Jacki Ginnings and #3 doubles duo Valen Trujillo and Sydney Autio.

Ginnings, making her debut as the team’s top player after Allie Hanigan’s graduation, won a three-set thriller that nearly went three hours.

Coming back from a set down, she impressed Stange with her grit and tenacity, earning the first Player of the Match award this season.

“The scores don’t indicate how closely the match was contested,” Stange said. “After finding herself being run ragged in the first set, Jacki turned it around, pushing her opponent from side to side, eventually forcing her into unfavorable positions.

“There were quite a few 20+ shot points, and Jacki found herself on the winning end of the ones that counted most,” he added. “It was an exciting win for Jacki.”

Coupeville had a chance to swing the match in its favor but fell just short, losing super-competitive matches at first and fourth doubles.

The battle at first doubles was especially impressive, as freshmen Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger came agonizingly close to upsetting a veteran Falcon pair before falling 7-5, 7-5.

“Our frosh had a 5-4 lead in each set but were unable to pick up the elusive sixth game,” Stange said. “This was the first ever high school tennis match for the duo. It was a bit of baptism by fire.

“They played with remarkable skill and composure, especially considering that they were up against a pair of experienced players,” he added. “These two have a bright future.”
