Jessica (Bester) Nelson

Family members have launched a GoFundMe to assist a former Wolf athlete facing a battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Jessica (Bester) Nelson, 26, attended middle school in Coupeville, playing basketball, and went on to be a member of the cheer squad as a CHS freshman, joining her cousin, Ciera St Onge.

Nelson has spent the past five weeks in the hospital and a rehabilitation facility and has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and neuromyelitis.

On the GoFundMe page, her mother says her daughter “no longer has use of her legs, and her hands are locked.”

Nelson is in need of “a wheelchair, toiletries, slippers and non-slip socks, belts for lifting, a transfer board, a wheelchair lift for their truck, and numerous other items” and the fundraiser is being launched to “alleviate some of the burden on her wife both financially and physically.”

Two days, four birthdays, many happy wishes.

Today and tomorrow mark the birth of a huge chunk of Coupeville High School’s athletic future (and present).

Sunday gave us twin basketball wonders Dante and DeAndre Mitchell, as well as Wolf cheerleader Jessica Bester. Monday brings with it the big day of football/basketball/baseball sensation Clay Reilly.

There’s actually another Wolf birthday on Monday, but we’re saving that one for her own article. Tune in Monday to see why.

For now, though, we honor this foursome, who have all made a quick impact in the red and black.

The Mitchell brothers, younger siblings of former Wolf dunk king Anthony Bergeron, were breakout players for the CHS boys’ JV hoops squad last season.

If they follow in the footsteps of Bergeron, who took a huge leap between his first and second seasons at Coupeville, expect the duo to set the nets on fire this year.

Bester joined the Wolf cheer squad as a freshman this year.

The cousin of fellow CHS cheerleader Ciera St Onge, she immediately fit in and shows great promise in the years to come.

Reilly, younger brother of lights-out basketball gunner Amanda Fabrizi, is an athlete for all seasons, and a talented one at that.

Whether flying around the gridiron, the hard-court or the diamond, where he saw varsity playing time last year as a freshman, he brings the same inner drive and flair for the dramatic that marked his sister’s stellar career.

Combined, the four represent the exciting future of Wolf sports.

To all of them, good luck, enjoy your big day, and continue to kick butt and take names.

A new high school sports year approaches and the Coupeville High School cheer squad is hard at work.

To get you ready, we present a series of features on Wolf cheerleaders, with the headline to each article paying tribute to 2009’s “Fired Up!,” the best cheerleader movie ever made.

Yeah, you heard me the first time, “Bring it On.” I said it and I meant it.

Jessica Bester is new to CHS, but she already has at least one connection to her new teammates on the Wolf cheer squad.

Senior Ciera St Onge, a Wolf veteran, is Bester’s cousin and helped recruit the freshman to make the jump from youth cheer programs in Oak Harbor to sporting the red and black.

Ciera was a big reason why I started high school cheer,” Bester said. “The reason I started was because I thought it would be fun and a good way to make friends.”

As the Wolves prepare for the football season ahead, the multi-sport athlete (she’s played basketball and softball) has found her new team to be a welcoming one.

“I enjoy how close you get with the girls,” Bester said. “You’re not just teammates, you’re a family.”

A fan of the movie “Finding Nemo,” she enjoys her history and science classes and draws on her family and friends for support.

“My mom, she’s always been a really big supporter in what I do,” Bester said. “When I felt like quitting she gave me all the reason to stay and thrive.”
