It has been a spring to remember.

As the smallest 1A school in the state, Coupeville High School has overcome the odds at every step, sending athletes to the state tournament in (count ’em!) five sports.

Wolf baseball has been, girls’ golf (Christine Fields) is there right now and track (Makana Stone), softball and boys’ tennis (Ben Etzell and Aaron Curtin) all hit the road Thursday morning for the trek to various locales in Eastern Washington.

It’s been six years since baseball made it this far, 12 for softball and Etzell and Curtin are the first boys’ tennis players to go to the big dance during Ken Stange’s run as CHS tennis coach.

Enjoy it while it happens. Spring 2014 — one pleasant surprise after another.

Curtin charges into action.

One door closed, but another is swinging wide open.

A day after ending their baseball season with a nail-biter loss to Rochester at the state tournament, Ben Etzell and Aaron Curtin will be back on the tennis court Sunday, getting ready for another crack at a title.

Etzell, a Coupeville High School senior, and Curtin, a junior, qualified for the boys’ tennis state tourney back in the fall.

They then put their rackets away for months, as tennis is staggered in Washington, with some schools playing in the fall and other in the spring.

But, just because they won’t be coming straight off a regular season run, don’t count out the Wolf duo.

“Only having the short week to prepare for state isn’t optimal, but I’m keeping a few things in mind: Aaron and Ben are both extremely talented athletes who gracefully transition from sport to sport, throughout the year,” said CHS coach Ken Stange.

“They had an up and down regular season but something happened at districts, though. They simply raised their games to a level neither of them had ever achieved. They amplified their strengths and they shored up their weaknesses,” he added. “It seemed like a flick of a switch. I was astounded by their display of dominance.”

Stange even went so far as to say the young guns might have taken out the seasoned pros who rule the Island courts. Heresy!

“On that day, I think they could have beaten Cliff Horr (my mega-talented doubles partner) and myself!”

Etzell and Curtin will hit the state tourney in Yakima May 30-31 as the #2 seed from their quad-district. They originally claimed third, but slid up a seed when the champs lost a player to a season-ending injury.

While the Wolf duo both sliced a finger while opening cans of tennis balls during quad-districts, they have both long ago healed.

Curtin injured his shoulder during the baseball season, but refrained from pitching during the second half and seems to be ready to go.

“Traditionally, the teams from our quad, which covers the entire I-5 corridor, have fared well at state,” Stange said. “I like our chances of making it to the semis, and hopefully the finals.

“The defending state champs, twins from Charles Wright, will likely be in the other half of the draw,” he added. “So we wouldn’t have to face them until the final.”

Basically, it’s super hero time.

Aaron is Plastic Man and Ben is Superman!,” Stange said. “They are in great shape after an extended baseball season. They also have a certain X factor.

“There are no stats to show how a couple of guys can gut it out and will themselves to do some unnatural things on the court,” he added. “They will tune up their shots, play a few practice matches against some of the Island’s finest players, they will go to Yakima, and they will play their butts off.

“Hopefully, we come home with some hardware!”

While it will be Etzell and Curtin’s first trip to state as netters, their coach has twice taken Wolf girls on the trip. He, for one, is ready and rarin’ to go.

“I am stoked,” Stange said. “This is the best chance any of my players have had at earning a medal. It should be fun!”

It’s not over until the last cupcake is eaten.

The Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad and coach Ken Stange officially closed out the 2014 season Thursday with an awards shindig, honoring 15 players for their efforts.

Senior Allie Hanigan, who anchored the Wolves at #1 singles all season, led the way, taking home the MVP as well as sharing Captain honors with Samantha Martin.

Jazmine Franklin earned Most Improved, Valen Trujillo was tabbed as Most Inspirational and Wynter Thorne nabbed the Coach’s Award.

Tennis Armageddon 2014 rages on!

Coupeville High School girls’ tennis coach Ken Stange is letting his players battle it out on the hard-court to decide who will represent the Wolves at the district tournament May 13.

So far, there have been upsets, surprises, unexpected twists and turns and gorgeous weather. And, as the survivors rest Wednesday night, four of the six berths have been locked down.

The singles part of the competition went quickly as there was little … competition.

With most of the Wolf players wanting to pair off and make a run at the two doubles spots, only two CHS players opted to play singles, automatically earning the spots to districts.

The first was hardly a surprise, as Allie Hanigan played #1 singles all season and would have likely won an inter-squad tourney.

The second, Maureen Rice, came out of left field, as one of the Wolf doubles players snatched a postseason berth for herself, despite her best efforts to get her teammates to step up.

Maureen was super gracious,” Stange said. “There were all these girls standing there, and she was trying to get them, one by one, to take the spot instead. She just wanted to play in our team tourney for the sake of playing.

“She told me that she was not the right person for the spot,” he added. “I told her that she was the absolute right person because she was the one who wanted to play!”

The player most likely to have grabbed the #2 singles spot was the netter who played at that position all season, Jacki Ginnings.

She opted to jump into the doubles competition however, and her season hangs in the balance, depending on a match Thursday.

That’s when she and Wynter Thorne will face off with Micky LeVine and Valen Trujillo for the #2 doubles spot.

Which ever team wins the match will join Sydney Autio and Sydney Aparicio, who knocked off both Ginnings/Thorne and LeVine/Trujillo to claim the #1 doubles berth.

They got that winning feeling back.

Snapping a five-match losing streak, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad shredded visiting Granite Falls 4-1 Tuesday. The victory avenged a narrow loss to the Tigers from last week, and put a smile on CHS coach Ken Stange’s face.

After taking a 5-2 loss to the joint forces of Port Townsend and Chimacum a day before, Stange shuffled his lineup and everything clicked against the Tigers.

The win lifted Coupeville to 4-7 with two matches left in the regular season.

The highlight of the Granite Falls match came from a new-look doubles duo of Wynter Thorne and Sydney Aparicio, who collected Player of the Match honors for a gritty win.

Sydney and Wynter both played the best tennis of their lives, and they did it against the GF duo who held my #1 team to five games in our match last week,” Stange said. “They hit harder, they were more accurate, and they went for each and every ball. It was inspiring tennis.”
