The countdown is on.

In less than two weeks the Coupeville High School football squad will travel to Langley to kick off its first season under new head coach Brett Smedley.

Before that Sept. 4 battle for The Bucket, however, the Wolves will be putting in work. Lots of it.

Catching some of that practice time Monday was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the pics that reside above.

But, it’s still the middle of the summer…

It may feel that way, but, as of today, we are only two weeks away from the official start of the fall high school sports season.

Football teams across the state will take the field Wednesday, Aug. 19 for the first day of practice, with the rest of the various sports squads following suit on Aug. 24.

In Coupeville, that means volleyball, boys’ tennis and girls’ soccer will join the action.

Tennis will be led by Ken Stange, going into his 11th year at the helm of the Wolf netters. While he recently resigned as a teacher at CHS to pursue a new vocation, he intends to remain on as the net guru.

His fellow coaches include Troy Cowan (entering his third season as soccer coach), Breanne Smedley (second year at the helm of the volleyball program) and Brett Smedley, who will be making his debut as head football coach.

To get you ready, a few more left-over pics from the CHS summer football scrimmage.

Sort of.

With summer workouts winding down, Coupeville High School got a chance to run plays against a real foe Saturday, with Lakeside coming to town for a scrimmage.

Traveling photo man John Fisken was nice enough to grace us with his presence, and the photos above are courtesy him.

This batch focuses on Coupeville players, while the previous article put the spotlight on Wolf coaches and fans.

Oh, and if you’re curious, the first day of real practice?

Wednesday, Aug. 19 — a mere 25 days from now.

A look at the Wolf roster (or at least everyone who was there on Day 1).

Football is back. Sort of.

Led by seniors-to-be Wiley Hesselgrave, Lathom Kelley and Ryan Griggs, the Coupeville High School gridiron squad kicked off the start of spring practice Monday.

While the season opener (Sept. 4 at South Whidbey) is still three months away, the early work gave the Wolves a chance to get used to a new coach.

With the departure of Tony Maggio, former assistant coach Brett Smedley has taken the reigns and Monday was his first day of running things.

As returning players and newbies ran through plays, traveling photo man John Fisken (doing double duty between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, where his son will play football in the fall) snapped the pics above.

Jump

This is exactly how they warm up every day. True story.

Track practice is not for running, it’s for goofing off with the cameraman.

On his way to snap pics at the CHS boys’ soccer game Wednesday, John Fisken stopped by the track oval and convinced some of the gathered Wolves to pose for him.

The pics above capture some of the most fleet-footed young men and women in Cow Town, doing what they do best … posing for photos.

Oh yeah, they’re pretty good at running too.

But, priorities please. Photos above all else. Always.
