Former Coupeville High School hoops coach Scott Fox sports a new purple and gold ensemble while gracing the Oak Harbor bench.

Once were Wolves, now are Wildcats.

Oak Harbor High School kicked off a new basketball season Saturday with “A Night with the Cats,” featuring various OHHS teams squaring off on the hardwood.

On the girl’s side of things, two participants have a Coupeville connection.

Sweet-shooting Lauren Marrs, coming off a stellar season on the soccer pitch, torched the nets in Cow Town back in her middle school days.

A proficient scorer for the Wolves, she’s back to lofting jumpers and remains a fan favorite.

Also reappearing on the sidelines is former Coupeville coach Scott Fox, now sporting purple and gold clothes.

The longtime hoops swami worked with both male and female players during his time at CHS.

Fox started with the Wolf boys’ program, then led the school’s varsity girls through two seasons of play before stepping down to focus on health issues.

And thus concludes our brief detour into Wildcat territory, home to the school which issued me a high school diploma.

There will be no rivalry games between Oak Harbor and Coupeville during the 2022-2023 season.

Having been KO’d by the 2B Wolves last season in a boy’s game, the 3A Wildcats constructed a schedule without a rematch this season.

It was a bit lopsided.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team scrapped and fought from the opening tap to the final whistle Tuesday but were eventually overwhelmed by their neighbors from the North.

By the time things were done, visiting Oak Harbor, a 3A school, had polished off the 2B Wolves to the tune of 9-0.

The non-conference loss, coming in its home opener, drops Coupeville to 0-2 on the season.

The Wolves get a chance to bounce right back however, with two more games this week.

CHS travels to University Prep Thursday, before hosting Ocosta Saturday.

The latter of those games is a 2 PM start at Mickey Clark Field.

Tuesday’s Island rivalry tilt was a scoreless affair for a good chunk of time, before Oak Harbor began to find and exploit the cracks in Coupeville’s defense, which spent much of the first half playing on its heels.

The Wildcats punched in the game’s first goal in the 10th minute, added two more in a seven-minute span, then blew things open with three scores in the final four minutes of the first half.

Coupeville was extremely limited in its scoring opportunities, making things easy-peasy for Oak Harbor goaltender (and former Wolf middle school star) Lauren Marrs.

The Wildcats tacked on three more goals in the second half, though Coupeville’s defenders, led by Nezi Keiper, continued to scrap for every loose ball.

While it’s tough for any 2B program to punch up three levels and face a 3A school, Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson was philosophical afterwards.

“It gave us a chance to go out and play, and get some solid playing time for our players, a lot of whom are fairly new,” he said.

“It helps us build.”

Lauren Marrs basks in victory, sweet victory. (Emili Marrs photos)

Younger sister Taylor (right) is also a pitch powerhouse.

She’s not a Wolf anymore, but she’s still a winner.

Lauren Marrs, who used to light up the basketball hardwood and soccer pitch in Coupeville, will be a sophomore at Oak Harbor High School this fall.

The talented student/athlete, among the brightest of young stars no matter the color of the uniform, kicked off August with a bang.

Playing at the Washington Rush Cup in Burlington, Marrs manned the goal on a title-winning soccer team, helping her squad go undefeated.

And she wasn’t alone, as younger sister Taylor also played in the tournament as well — for a different team — and scored a goal after being bumped from defense to the front.

The Marrs family, which includes older sister Jaden, a former CHS cheerleader, and parents Brian and Emili, is living the 24/7/365 soccer life.

This weekend’s tourney was the fifth of seven this summer, and the only one in which both Lauren and Taylor both make an appearance.

South Whidbey’s Madeline Racicot triggers a play Tuesday as the Falcons clash with Island rival Oak Harbor. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Occasionally I’ll admit there’s more than one high school on The Rock.

Fast rule — give me free pics to run on the blog, and, lo and behold, Oak Harbor and South Whidbey do exist! Funny how that happens.

Said the guy whose own diploma came from OHHS way back in the day…

Anyways, Tuesday night brought the two Whidbey schools not named Coupeville into conflict, with the 3A Wildcats of Oak Town holding off the feisty 1A Falcons, capturing a 2-1 win on the soccer pitch.

The victory lifts Oak Harbor to 2-4-2 on the season, while South Whidbey dips to 1-3.

Meanwhile, in Coupeville, the Wolf booters don’t take the field until the end of this month, as the Northwest 2B/1B League is playing spring sports first during this pandemic-ravaged school year.

And PS — Gram and Gramps would probably like a glossy or two for the mantlepiece. Just sayin’.

Lauren Marrs basks in the glow of helping her basketball team win a SWISH championship. (Emili Marrs photo)

Lauren Marrs is the type of player every coach appreciates.

She can control a game by herself, seems to have little fear on the hardwood or pitch, and is already quite-polished for an athlete headed into her freshman year of high school.

But as talented as Marrs has been while playing with middle school and select squads, it is the way she embraces being part of something bigger which truly sets her apart.

She can be a star, if that’s what you need, but she can also be part of an ensemble, if that’s what you require.

All while displaying the same passion and positive attitude, regardless of her role.

For Marrs, that just comes naturally.

“I enjoy everything about being an athlete,” she said. “I love being a part of a team.

“I just want to keep working hard and learning,” Marrs added. “I want to keep improving in all areas of the sports I play.”

In her middle school days, the younger sister of former Wolf standout Jaden Marrs played sports year-round, with volleyball, basketball (school and SWISH), and select soccer on her resume.

As she makes the jump to Coupeville High School, Lauren plans to fine-tune her focus, putting an emphasis on basketball, where she’s a deadly shooter and fluid ballhandler, and soccer, which is her burning passion.

“My favorite sport is soccer,” Marrs said. “I have been playing for 10 years, select for the last six.”

On the pitch, she’s a lock-down enforcer in net, playing goaltender for the SW Reign the past three seasons.

“I love the position I play and I would like to continue on playing it throughout high school and college,” Marrs said.

She plans to play both sports all four years of high school, and pledges, “I want us to work hard and win.”

Off the field, Marrs enjoys her health and PE classes, is a big fan of The Goonies and the Indiana Jones movies, and finds numerous ways to stay busy.

“I like to spend my time playing and watching sports,” she said. “I also like to swim, hike, play b-ball, go to the beach, and spend time with my friends and my family.”

Whether she’s knifing big, bad King’s on the hardwood, nailing a three-ball from somewhere out in the parking lot as mom Emili high-fives everyone within a five-mile radius, or pulling off a sweet shutout on the soccer pitch, Lauren keep things simple.

“I look up to my parents and listen to and respect what my coaches say.”

Sounds like a star to me.
