Big battles loom for Wolves

The schedule is slim, but the games are big.

The week ahead features just one contest apiece for Coupeville High School volleyball, football, and soccer, while cross country gets two events.

The Wolf harriers host a home meet at Fort Casey Wednesday, then hit the road Saturday for an appearance at the Twilight Invitational at the Cedarcrest Golf Course.

Meanwhile, the CHS booters host Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood under Friday Night Lights, while football travels to Friday Harbor for a first-place showdown the same evening.

Wolf volleyball gets its match early in the week, with a trip to La Conner to face the four-time defending state champs.

The Braves seem vulnerable, however, having lost four of their first five matches in the post-Suzanne and Ellie Marble era.

Plus, La Conner lost to Coupeville at the South Whidbey Invite Saturday, which could be a sweet appetizer to the main course.

Scan the standings, one final time

Time for the fireworks.

The regular season is done, league champs are crowned, and it’s nothing but playoff action from here on out.

Three of Coupeville’s four spring sports teams are still alive heading into next week, with two in action.

Girls’ tennis sends two singles players and two doubles teams to Bi-Districts Friday, May 19 in Seattle, where the Wolves will try and punch some tickets to the state championships.

CHS baseball plays the next day, making its first appearance at state since 2014.

The location of that game and opponent will be announced Sunday when the seeding committee reveals its work.

Coupeville’s track and field team is also off to state, but not until the following week, with the last meet of the season set for May 25-27.

New month, new challenges

The calendar turns and things get serious.

The arrival of May marks the start of the stretch run for Coupeville High School spring sports teams, with league titles and possible postseason glory at stake.

Wolf softball, baseball, and girls’ tennis all sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings, while track and field has been dominant, especially on the boy’s side.

The CHS netters, who have clinched at least a tie for the conference crown, can claim sole possession with a win Tuesday at Friday Harbor.

Miss there, and they’ll get another crack May 12, when the Wolverines travel to Whidbey for Coupeville’s Senior Night.

Wolf softball only plays once in the week ahead, but everything hinges on the outcome.

The sluggers travel to Friday Harbor Thursday, and the stakes are simple.

Win, and the Wolves clinch a playoff berth. Lose, and a May 12 non-conference road game at South Whidbey is the season finale.

CHS baseball was supposed to play twice, but non-league rival Sultan bailed on a Monday trip to Whidbey, so the hardball squad will wait until Thursday, joining softball for its island-to-island trek.

Win, lose, or draw, the diamond squad has clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tourney for 2B schools, where they’ll need one victory May 13 to punch a ticket to state.

What is at stake this coming week is the NWL title.

Coupeville is a half-game up on 1B Mount Vernon Christian, with the teams having split their two-game season series.

MVC has games left Tuesday with Concrete and Thursday with Orcas Island as the Hurricanes angle to stay even with the Wolves.

While the first three sports are nearing the end of the regular season, track is the first to step into the postseason, with a trip Wednesday to La Conner for the league championships.

That starts a three-meet run for glory, with districts and state up next.

As we head into a (possibly) dramatic week, a look at current standings for teams which tally wins and losses:

Spring sports start strong

Rolling right along.

With surprisingly decent weather to kick off spring sports, Coupeville High School teams are wading into action on diamonds, ovals, and courts everywhere.

All four Wolf spring programs have at least one competition under their belts, and, weather permitting, the week ahead is a busy one.

CHS softball plays three times, hosting league rival La Conner Tuesday, before playing a unique non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves start the day with a bout against Forks, then return later in the day to play Granite Falls, with those two teams squaring off for their own game in between.

Across the road, the Coupeville baseball squad welcomes La Conner to town Tuesday, before Forks comes to Robert Sherman Field Saturday.

The Wolf track and girls’ tennis teams have more of a road-heavy schedule next week.

The netters travel to Friday Harbor Tuesday, then amble down the island Thursday to tangle with South Whidbey.

Coupeville track and field hosts a meet Wednesday, before travelling to Bellingham Friday and Stanwood Saturday to participate in large invitationals.

As we exit the first week of spring sports and head towards week #2, an early look at how the Wolves and their league rivals are faring so far:

Hardwood hotshots rumble for positioning

Look twice, because it’s not a misprint.

As we head into a new week of basketball, the Northwest 2B/1B League standings are identical on the boys’ and girls’ side of things.

While overall win/loss records are skewed, both Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island hoops programs sit atop the conference at 2-0.

Both La Conner squads are 1-0, even if the league web site tries to count an early non-conference win over Rainer Christian as a league win and tell you the Braves boys are 2-0.

They are not…

Then comes Coupeville and Friday Harbor at 0-1, and both Concrete teams at 0-3, which means the Wolf boys have a little work to do to defend their league crown.

Things should start to diverge as we move forward — for one thing, the Orcas boys are much stronger than their female counterparts — and could start down that path this coming week.

Coupeville is busy, hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Friday, though there is still some question as whether the MVC game, the first of two against the Hurricanes, counts in the league standings.

After that comes a whirlwind trip to Neah Bay Saturday for non-conference rumbles.

With all that in mind, where we currently sit:
