CMS/CHS Robotics wants you!

Build the future, today!

Well, OK, things don’t actually get going until September, but you get the point.

Coupeville schools are putting a big push on robotics, with a two-pronged approach.

They want to expand their middle school team, which is open to students in grades 6-8, while also developing their first team at the high school (9-12) level.

CMS robotics club shines brightly

They came, they saw, they impressed the judges.

The Coupeville Middle School robotics club spent Saturday at Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, competing in the First Lego League Qualifier.

Led by coaches Alison Perera and Doug McVey, the Wolves had two teams competing — the Robotic Wolves and Technical Duties.

CMS left school at the crack o’ dawn (or 6:00 AM) and pulled back into Cow Town about 14 hours later.

“It’s been a long day,” Perera said. “Super proud of the kids for persevering through a long day!”

Coupeville finished 8th and 9th out of a field of 31 teams.

While CMS didn’t advance to the semifinals this year, it was still a strong run for the talented students.

“It was a tough field with some great innovative projects and cool robot designs,” Perera said. “It was a great day after a great season!”

Students did a presentation in the morning, then played the robot game in the afternoon, with both CMS teams notching higher scores than they did in previous practices.

CMS robotics club relaunches

Combine Legos and robots, and take over the world.

They’ll never even know they’re learning.

Coupeville Middle School is relaunching its popular robotics club this school year, and putting the call out for interested students.

The program uses Legos and robots to help students “develop science, engineering, and teamwork skills.”

This year’s challenge theme for the First Lego League is “Cargo Connect,” with students finding “innovative solutions to improve transportation of goods and products from place to place.”

Signups will take place the first two weeks of school.

CES robotics team storms the big time!!

Boasting a 16-student roster, up from 10 in its first year, Coupeville Elementary School’s Combined Robotics team is headed to the First LEGO League Regional Qualifiers Saturday, Dec. 3 in Mount Vernon.

While there the team, comprised of the “Wizard Piggies” and “Brick Vikings,” will compete for a slot in the state competition.

If they do so, it will be the second straight trip to the big dance for CES.

While in Mt. Vernon, the two teams will compete with research projects and on a robotics challenge course centered around the theme “Animal Allies.”

Dr. Sandi Farris of Harmony Veterinary helped the teams identify issues that arise during interaction between humans and animals.

The Wizard Piggies are dealing with the problem of deer and vehicle collisions, while the Vikings looked into the often expensive problems of horse tack.

Both teams worked cooperatively to program LEGO Mindstorm robots to run a tough challenge course, completing as many missions and racking up as many points as possible in the three-minute heats which determine robot rankings and test robot designs under pressure.

At regionals, the students will present their research findings and prototypes to a judges panel, then explain their programming and building decisions.

They’ll also have to work a surprise challenge that tests team communication, cooperation, and self-discipline without coaches or mentors to help them.
