It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

Overcoming a rocky beginning, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad came roaring back late Friday, turning a double-digits deficit into a wild one-point overtime win.

Pulling out a 42-41 non-conference thriller at Orcas Island, the Wolves, who hadn’t played in nine days, soared to 6-3 heading into the new year.

Coupeville, which has played seven of nine games on the road this season, will stay in road warrior mode next week, when it faces perhaps its biggest test of the season.

The Wolves, 2-0 in 1A Olympic League play, travel to Port Townsend (2-0) Tuesday and Chimacum (1-2) Friday.

As they aim to keep their 20-game league winning streak alive, the Wolves are hoping for more of how they played down the stretch Friday, and less of how they opened the game.

Coupeville, which found itself in a 18-8 hole after a rough first quarter, scraped away at the Vikings, but still trailed by seven entering the fourth.

Utilizing a strong press and crafty shot-making, CHS dominated in the final quarter of regulation, however, using a 12-5 surge to knot things up at 38 and give the fans extra action.

Coupeville got something from everyone down the stretch, with Mia Littlejohn knocking down a huge three-ball to spark things.

Lindsey Roberts scored four of her team-high 10 in the fourth, while Kailey Kellner dropped in three and both Kalia Littlejohn and Mikayla Elfrank tickled the twines on a successful free throw.

If the Wolves could have been a bit sharper from the charity stripe, there would have been no need for overtime, as CHS connected on just 11 of 26 free throws on the night.

With neither team able to deliver a knockout punch at the end of regulation, overtime beckoned.

Orcas drew first blood with a bucket, but Kalia Littlejohn immediately sliced through the Viking defense to re-tie the game with a basket of her own.

After that, neither team could hit from the field, but free throws from Mia Littlejohn (tying things at 41) and Kellner (pushing Coupeville ahead 42-41) were crucial.

Orcas had the ball and a chance to win with 2.5 ticks left on the clock, but the Wolves successfully hounded the Vikings ball handler down the sideline, preventing a final shot before time expired.

The finish was quite a turn-around from the start.

A bit rusty from the week-and-a-half break between games, and bothered by illness, the Wolves came out a step slow in the early-afternoon game.

“The first quarter continues to be a struggle for us; today was no different,” said Coupeville coach David King. “Offensively we are slowing the ball down too much and ending a possession with a rushed shot.”

Things picked up, in brief spurts at least, going forward, as the Wolves won the scoring battle in every other quarter.

A huge key was Coupeville’s team-wide defensive effort.

After giving up 18 in the first eight minutes, the Wolves steadily reduced Orcas’ scoring going forth, from eight to seven to five to a meager three in overtime.

Lauren Rose drilled a couple of key shots to set up the fourth quarter rally, while super sophomores Kalia Littlejohn and Roberts played crucial roles all night.

“Seems like this year, from game to game, we have different players stepping up on the offensive end,” King said. “Today it was Lindsey and Kalia.

“Yesterday I challenged Lindsey that the team needs her to be confident on offense and to look to score when she’s open,” he added. “Kalia is a spark plug on defense, but game after game I can see her confidence growing with handling the ball and taking the open shots.”

Eight different Wolves scored, something King loves to see.

“It was truly a team win.”

Kalia Littlejohn dropped in a season-high seven to back Roberts and her 10 points, while Mia Littlejohn (6), Rose (5), Tiffany Briscoe (4), Kellner (4), Elfrank (4) and Kyla Briscoe (2) all scored.

A huge factor in the comeback win was Coupeville’s relentless work on the boards.

Kellner snatched 15 and Roberts hauled in 13 as CHS made off with 52 caroms, including 28 on the offensive end.

“The players aren’t quitting. We talked about getting back into the game with our defense,” King said. “It’s great seeing the fight and will to win games like this.

“Once we put a first half together like our last two second halves we won’t have to climb out of the hole we put ourselves in,” he added. “It’s a process and we are seeing signs that have us headed in the right direction.”

Change the sign on the Friday Harbor High School gym, because Coupeville owns the joint.

The Wolf varsity girls’ basketball squad has now gone 4-0 on the FHHS court over the past two seasons, winning back-to-back Friday Harbor Tip-Off Classic titles.

The latest triumph came Saturday, thanks to a dagger of a buzzer-beating three-ball from Lindsey Roberts.

The only basket the sophomore hit all game, it dropped through the net and rolled away as the game’s final two seconds ticked off, silencing a partisan crowd and lifting Coupeville to a 34-31 win over the tourney hosts.

Coming a day after the Wolves manhandled Seattle Academy, the win lifts CHS to 2-1 heading into league play.

Coupeville has a busy week coming up, finally playing at home when they host 1A Olympic League rivals Chimacum Wednesday and Klahowya Friday.

The Wolves will close their longest home-stand of the season when they welcome Island rival South Whidbey to town next Saturday for a non-conference game.

Coupeville won its second straight Tip-Off Classic by living out the Glengarry Glen Ross credo — Always Be Closing.

A little flat in the early going, the Wolves fell behind against a taller team, but kept on scrapping.

“All game it was a battle in and around the key,” said CHS coach David King. “Friday Harbor had the height advantage, but Lindsey, Tiffany (Briscoe), Kailey (Kellner) and Mikayla (Elfrank) stood toe-to-toe all game with their post players.”

Trailing 15-13 headed into the halftime break, King stressed the need to get back to a team-wide effort on the offensive end of the floor.

“The first half was a lot of one-on-one play for us,” he said. “This led to poor shots and we didn’t give ourselves a chance to get offensive rebounds.

“We didn’t play good enough to be leading, but just well enough to know if we made a few changes after halftime we could regain the lead and come away with a win.”

Wanting to share the ball more, Coupeville did just that on a key play in the third.

Out on the break, Elfrank pulled the defense to herself, then fed Briscoe for a layup to give the Wolves the lead.

Coupeville also ramped up its defensive game, with aggressive play from guards Mia Littlejohn, Lauren Rose, Kalia Littlejohn and Lauren Grove driving their foes bonkers.

Friday Harbor committed three 30-second shot clock violations, with the biggest resulting in a Wolverine trey being called off, as it left the shooter’s hands after the buzzer.

Up three headed into the fourth, Coupeville was looking to pull away, but took a body blow when leading scorer Kailey Kellner was lost to a dislocated finger.

She made an ER visit while her teammates closed out the game, but is expected to be back at full power next week.

Coupeville and Friday Harbor went back-and-forth down the stretch, with Elfrank coming up huge.

She turned a steal into a crucial bucket, then fed Roberts for the game-winner.

With the game knotted at 31 and 10 seconds to play, King drew up a play for Elfrank to get the final shot on the wing.

With a defender in front of her, the Wolf junior smartly didn’t try and force a shot, but whipped a pass to Roberts, who was trailing just outside the arc.

Ball hit hands, ball left hands, ball met net, and Roberts danced away, having slipped the dagger in that killed all of Friday Harbor.

Before her injury, Kellner dropped in 12 points and snagged eight boards to pace the Wolves.

Elfrank had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks, while Mia Littlejohn knocked down five points and Roberts (3), Rose (2), Briscoe (2) and Grove (2) rounded out the scorers.

Grove and Roberts twinned again, each hauling down five boards.

Ready to kick off a new season. (David King photo)

They were flying high for a half.

If the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad could have left Blaine at halftime Tuesday, things would have been great.

Unfortunately, the host Borderites forced the Wolves to play a full 32 minutes on opening night, and used a second-half surge to run away with a 35-19 non-conference victory.

It was a disappointing finish after Coupeville jumped on their 2A foes en route to a 13-3 lead midway through the second quarter.

“We used so much energy (adrenaline) in the first half, due to some nerves and being the first game, that we didn’t leave enough in the tank for the second half,” said CHS coach David King.

“We came out sluggish and flat-footed (after the break),” he added. “This led to easy buckets for Blaine. We couldn’t stop their baseline drives all night.”

Things got off to a great start, as Lindsey Roberts swished a baseline jumper to kick off the new season.

Coupeville was aggressive on both ends of the floor in the early going, shutting the Borderites down for much of the first half.

“Our defense was the key and our catalyst the first half,” King said. “Started in a zone and prevented open looks for Blaine most of the half.”

But while the buckets fell for the Wolves in the first two quarters, the rim was unforgiving during the stretch run.

“Offensively in the second half we played horizontal instead of vertical and attacking the basket,” King said. “We left a lot of points on the rim all game long.

“Without watching film, I would say we missed 8-10 point blank shots on either post-up moves or rebound put-backs.”

Combined with a cold touch on free throws (“this seems to be a Coupeville girls bugaboo that’s carried over from seasons past”), the Wolves straggled home with just five second-half points.

While he would have preferred the second half to be a mirror image of the first half, King didn’t come away totally disappointed.

“We looked to run more tonight and the effort was there,” he said. “It will be exciting to watch the growth in this area as the season progresses.

“Overall I was pleased with our defense for a half and our effort in looking to push the ball,” King added. “We need to minimize our turnovers and shoot a better percentage.”

One Wolf in particular drew praise for her opening night work.

“When Allison (Wenzel) was called on, she gave us a big lift each time. Diving after loose balls and playing tough defense,” King said.

Mia Littlejohn paced Coupeville with five points, while Roberts (4), Kailey Kellner (3), Wenzel (2), Kalia Littlejohn (2), Lauren Rose (2) and Sarah Wright (1) all chipped in.

Mikayla Elfrank tore down seven rebounds while Roberts collected six and Wenzel snatched five. Kellner and Kalia Littlejohn had two assists apiece.

Kyla Briscoe (three boards), Lauren Grove and Tiffany Briscoe all saw playing time, as well.

Coupeville returns to action this weekend when it defends its title at the Friday Harbor Tip-Off Classic.

The Wolves open play Friday against Seattle Academy, then play either Seattle Lutheran or the tourney hosts Saturday.

Sage Renninger leads Coupeville in assists, and, if we believe MaxPreps, is (John Fisken photo)

Sage Renninger leads Coupeville in assists, and, if we believe MaxPreps, is #7 among all 1A players. (John Fisken photo)

This much we know for sure — Mia Littlejohn is having a heck of a season.

According to stats on MaxPreps, she’s the second-best goal scorer in the entire state this season, trailing Ashlyn Willis of Tonasket by the slimmest of margins at 26-25.

That puts Littlejohn #1 among all 1A players for goals, while she’s also #2 in points (#3 across all divisions, which run from 1B-4A).

Now, one caveat.

MaxPreps is still very much a work in progress (no matter what they want you to believe), and among the schools who have NOT reported stats this season is three-time 1A Olympic League champ Klahowya.

So, basically, great season, Mia. Still not 100% sure where you stand, though we know it’s near the top.

At least Littlejohn is not getting shafted like Wolf goalie Lauren Grove, who has 109 saves and yet somehow is missing from the state leader list, which starts at … 67.

And who knows if that’s right, as that goalie, Cate Caporicci of St. George’s, supposedly made those 67 saves while only playing 105 minutes.

There are 80 minutes in a high school soccer game, so, at 67 saves in less than a game-and-a-half, she is either All-World or her defense is the worst to ever take the pitch, or both.

So, as you gaze at the numbers below, be grateful CHS coach Troy Cowan is staying on top of his stat sheet, while shaking your head gently at everyone else.

Small victories.

Until they can take the next step and actually dethrone state soccer power Klahowya, the Coupeville High School booters will have to continue to look for areas of improvement.

One, without a doubt, was finally breaking through the Eagle defense, as they did Tuesday night.

After being shutout the first five times they faced Klahowya, over a three-year period, the Wolves finally got on the board in a 5-2 loss, making a small, but important, chink in the Eagles armor.

Sophomore defender Lindsey Roberts notched both goals, taking direct kicks after the rampaging Kalia Littlejohn was fouled by Klahowya’s defense.

That doubled Roberts scoring output on the season, with her four goals sitting third on the stat sheet behind Mia Littlejohn (21) and Kalia Littlejohn (7).

The loss drops Coupeville to 4-2 in 1A Olympic League play, 6-5-1 overall, and puts them two games behind Klahowya (6-0, 8-1-2) with three to play.

The Wolves, who have finished second both years the four-team league has been in existence, can make it three straight years with a win at Port Townsend (2-4, 3-8-1) Thursday.

That would leave them mathematically alive for the league crown, while a #2 seed gets them a home playoff game (on the turf field in Oak Harbor) Oct. 29.
