Lions Club honors Calkins, Spear

It’s been a busy fall for Teagan Calkins and George Spear.

The Coupeville High School seniors have been at the forefront of the sports world, starring for the Wolf volleyball and cross country teams respectively.

Plus, the duo has been showcasing their big brains with their in-class performances and side gigs.

All that hard work is paying off, however, as Calkins and Spear have been tabbed as the Coupeville Lions Club Students of the Quarter.

They’ll be honored by the club at a meeting Nov. 19.

The local Lions Club, which has been chugging along awarding scholarships for 87 years, honors two CHS 12th graders each quarter during the school year, before picking two as the Students of the Year come graduation time.

School staff votes for the students, while considering things such as community service, effort, character, social relationships, leadership, scholarship, and sportsmanship.

Teagan Calkins, daughter of Jackie Saia and Shawn Calkins, is a multi-sport star for the Wolves, playing a leading role for CHS volleyball, basketball, and softball squads. She’s been to the state tourney as both a spiker and diamond ace.

“The Red Dragon” is also busy in the community, working as a volunteer ref and coach for youth sports while participating with the Lions Leo Club, Exec, Captain’s Club, and the National Honor Society.

Calkins works in the school library, is part of the Green Team environmental club, and has been a Race the Reserve volunteer.

And she’s also a popular nanny who enjoys puzzles while frequently hopping around the country to pursue life as a home run-mashing club softball player.

In the classroom, she gravitates towards science, math, and sports medicine, while maintaining a flawless 4.0 GPA.

The future? It includes plans to attend a four-year university to pursue a Biomedical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree.

George Spear runs between the raindrops.

Her fellow honoree, George Spear, is the son of Ward Sparacio and Teresa Stewart.

The president of the Coupeville High School Leo’s Club, he’ll be in Pasco Saturday to run in the state cross country championships for the third time.

Also an accomplished track and field athlete, Spear is involved in ASB, is a library volunteer, and a member of the National Honor Society.

Staying busy at all times, he’s worked in the catering business, as a farmhand at the Whidbey Equestrian Center, and as a pool attendant at the Sierra Country Club.

Spear enjoys math, reading, and playing Dungeons and Dragons, carries a 3.959 GPA, has been active in local food drives and beach cleanups, and is part of the Coupeville School District Facilities Task Force.

He plans to attend a United States service academy or attend college through the ROTC scholarship program, with designs on becoming a military officer.

Marti, Roberts honored by Lions

They’re winners in and out of the classroom.

Three-sport Coupeville High School senior athletes Katie Marti and Landon Roberts have been selected as the final Lions Club Students of the Quarter for the 2024-2025 school year.

The duo will be honored May 21.

The Lions Club, which has awarded scholarships to CHS students for over 87 years, picks its top students each quarter, then selects two as the Students of the Year come graduation time.

All 12th grade students are eligible for the quarterly award, which is voted on by school staff.

Criteria include “community service, effort, character, social relationships, scholarship, and sportsmanship when applicable.”

Katie Marti, daughter of Christi Messner and Frank Marti, has played softball, track, volleyball, and basketball during her high school career.

She was the starting setter and a team captain for the CHS spikers as they earned a 4th place trophy at the 2B state tourney this past fall, the best finish in program history.

Marti, who has been named to multiple All-League teams for her athletic accomplishments, is also a member of the National Honor Society and Captains Club and a busy bee in the world of community service.

Some of her volunteer activities have included Lions Leo Club, beach cleanup activities, assisting with youth basketball clinics, Race the Reserve, Coupeville Water Festival, Coupeville Arts Festival, Lions Club Auction, and Mussel Fest.

A lover of science and math who carries a 3.7 GPA, Marti is a lifeguard and teaches swim lessons in the summer.

She plans to attend Western Washington University and major in marine biology.

Landon Roberts, son of Sherry Bonacci and Jon Roberts, has played baseball, basketball, and cross country for the Wolves, while being named a captain in all of his sports.

Like Marti, he’s in the National Honor Society and is always on the move.

Roberts operates a landscaping business, works part-time at Sunnyside Cemetery, and has been involved in the Lions Club garage sale, Race the Reserve, and the Booster Club’s annual fundraising dinner.

A mentor to young athletes, he also officiates youth sports.

Devoted to the arts of welding and woodworking, Roberts has a 3.6 GPA and plans to attend a technical college in Washington state.

While there, he wants to obtain certification and an AAS in welding and fabrication, while trying out for the baseball team.

Light, Butler honored by Lions

Two of Coupeville’s best have seized the spotlight.

Wolf seniors Ember Light and Mason Butler were tabbed as the Coupeville Lions Club Students of the Quarter for the third academic quarter.

The club honors two students each quarter, before picking the Students of the Year at graduation time.

The Coupeville Lions, who have been celebrating local students for almost nine decades, awarded over $50,000 in scholarship money last year.

The students of the quarter distinction, voted on by school staff, is open to all CHS seniors.

Criteria includes “community service, effort, character, social relationships, scholarship, and sportsmanship — when applicable.”

Ember Light, daughter of Cassandra and Elgin Light, is a four-year cheerleader and former tennis player who has also been a part of the high school yearbook staff, the Exec Council, the Captains Club, and the Leos Club.

Her favorite subject is English, and she excels in her honors classes, including AP History, AP Government, AP Calculus, AP Literature, and AP Language.

Ember is employed as a barista at Beavertails Coffee, enjoys crocheting, embroidery, painting and sewing, and is an active volunteer with Ragnar, Junior Cheer, Race for the Reserve, and the Captains Club.

After graduation, she plans to attend college and major in Psychology.

Mason Butler, son of Eileen Butler and James Exe, is a soccer and track athlete who is also President of the Leos Club.

A member of the National Honor Society, he enjoys his theater, AP Literature, and AP Government classes.

When not at school, he works for Front Street Grill, is big into magic and gaming, and is a frequent flier in the world of volunteering.

Mason, who plans to become an electrician at Bellingham Technical College before returning to Coupeville to start his own business, can be found in the thick of things for a number of events.

He’s volunteered his time with the Greening of Coupeville, the Coupeville Lions Club, Fort Ebey, the Whidbey-Camano Land Trust, the Coupeville Water Festival, the Central Whidbey Career Fair, Whidbey State Parks, Musselfest, and Sno-Isle libraries.

Lions Club honors Wolf cheerleaders

Two cheers for the Coupeville Lions Club Students of the Quarter.

Both Pamela Morrell and Makenna Jonker-Chambers are key members of the CHS spirit squad, while also being top-notch students and community members.

The Lions Club honors two Wolf seniors each academic quarter, before picking its Students of the Year at graduation time.

Morrell and Jonker-Chambers, honored Jan. 13, are being tabbed for their efforts during the second academic quarter of the school year.

CHS staff and teachers vote on the awards, with students honored for “community service, effort, character, social relationships, scholarship, and sportsmanship.”

Along with her work as a cheerleader, Jonker-Chambers is on the Executive Board, a member of the National Honor Society, and a participant in the school’s Captain’s Club.

The daughter of Amy Jonker and Donald Chambers pulls down a 3.8 GPA, with her favorite classes including math, biology, and health careers.

Jonker-Chambers, who volunteers as a tutor and with a vacation bible school, plans to attend a four-year university, followed by medical school, with a focus on radiology.

Pamela Morrell

Pamela Morrell, daughter of Jennifer and Frank Morell, is a busy bee, devoting time to the Leo’s Club while also participating in numerous parades.

She works at Kapaw’s Ice Cream and Apple Orchard Daycare.

Carrying a GPA of 3.88, she enjoys her English and sports medicine classes, while balancing cheer, theater, the Captain’s Club, the Sports Medicine Club, and Skills USA.

A member of the National Honor Society, Morrell plans to attend Whatcom Community College, with plans to later transfer to Western Washington University.
