Time to run with the big boys (and girls).

The second track and field meet of the season sent Coupeville High School’s squad way down the road Saturday, where the Wolves vied at the 24-team Rainier Icebreaker.

The meet drew schools from numerous classifications, but the Wolves, repping a 2B school, more than held their own.

Coupeville’s boys placed fifth in the team competition, while their female counterparts claimed 14th overall.

Onalaska’s boys and Rainier’s girls came out on top in the point chase.

While Coupeville didn’t claim any individual wins, the Wolves did collect three second-place performances, with two of those being ties among teammates.

Katie Marti was runner-up in the javelin, while Cael Wilson shared second place in the high jump and pole vault with Davin Houston and Axel Marshall, respectively.

Toss in 22 PR’s spread out amongst 19 Wolves, with Isa Mc Fetridge, Liam Blas, and Ari Cunningham notching two apiece to lead the way, and CHS coaches came away pleased.

“Beautiful afternoon, high energy, new faces — team came in hungry for success!” said Bob Martin.

Coupeville returns to action next week with two meets. Up first is a trip off-island Wednesday, Mar. 26 for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet hosted by Mount Vernon Christian.

They have the numbers and the talent.

Boasting one of its biggest rosters in program history, the Coupeville High School track and field team made its presence felt Wednesday at a season-opening 11-team meet in La Conner.

The Wolf boys ran away with the team title, racking up 182.5 points, while their nearest competition, Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner, finished with 88 and 87 respectively.

On the girls’ side of things, CHS earned third place with 100.67 points, trailing just MVC (144.5) and La Conner (129.5).

Three Wolves double-dipped on opening day, bringing home titles in a pair of events.

Lyla Stuurmans (800, 1600), Cael Wilson (Pole Vault, High Jump), and Carson Field (800, 1600) were two-time winners, while Aleksia Jump (Pole Vault), George Spear (3200), and Katie Marti (Shot Put) also claimed crowns.

Rounding out Coupeville’s winners were its 4 x 100 boys’ relay team comprised of Marquette Cunningham, Preston Epp, Davin Houston, and Chase Anderson.

“Great first meet!” said CHS coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“A little rain, a little wind, and a lot of PRs – we’re so proud of the team!”

After finishing round one with 10 wins, 95 PRs, and a team title, the Wolves will get right back at it this Saturday, Mar. 22 when they compete at the Rainier Icebreaker.

Coupeville seniors lead the way. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Track and field are booming in Cow Town.

Coupeville High School coaches have 70+ athletes on their opening day roster, with an astounding 34 of those coming from the freshman class.

With the Wolves led by a pack of returning state meet veterans, there’s both depth and talent, creating an air of excitement as a new season dawns.

“Track is unique in that we don’t know what each year brings us when it comes to ‘top players’,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“Athletes progress throughout the season and the more years they participate in track the more work and effort they put in which results in improvement.

“Our top returning players would be those who are returning from a previous season. However, with 70+ athletes we don’t know what the season will bring.”

Based on past performance, senior Lyla Stuurmans, who has three state meet medals to her credit, should be a key performer, however.

Toss in Cael Wilson, Carly Burt, Axel Marshall, and Zac Tackett and CHS has five active athletes who know what it’s like to earn a medal at the season-ending state championship meet.

Carson Field, Davin Houston, Liam Blas, Marcelo Gebhard, Marquette Cunningham, Preston Epp, and Thomas Strelow are also noteworthy names.

As are Noelle Western, Katie Marti, Lillian Ketterling, Ayden Wyman, Mikayla Wagner, and Aleksia Jump.

But, as Bitting noted, part of the fun of a track and field campaign is seeing who steps up, who makes their big breakthrough, and who is still standing weeks into competition.

“As always, our goal is to prolong the season as long as we can and to continue seeing improvement and PRs,” Bitting said.

“This is an impressive group. They have already shown us their willingness to follow through and be present.”

As Coupeville battles always-tough Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner for Northwest 2B/1B League domination, roster depth is always important.

“Our strength is in our numbers,” Bitting said. “Each and every athlete is working hard to perform their best.

“Having competition within the team helps them to push themselves and each other.”

Wolf coaches and managers present a united front.

Everyone wants some.

State meet medals, that is.

With a new track and field season on the horizon, the journey begins, with Yakima the preferred destination this May.

Advance to the state meet at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School, and the Wolves can add to their medal totals or begin the collection process.

Five current stars are among those on the all-time list of CHS athletes who own medals, led by senior Lyla Stuurmans, who has banked three of them.

She’s joined by Carly Burt, Cael Wilson, Axel Marshall, and Zac Tackett, with everyone still chasing the King brothers.

Lyla Stuurmans lets fly. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

La Conner’s scorebook operators can’t get their story straight.

The school reported Friday’s varsity girls’ basketball game as a 41-31 win for the Braves over visiting Coupeville, but their own numbers prove that wrong.

Yes, it ultimately was a loss for CHS, but a scan of the books — crafted by the locals — shows the score was 40-34.

So, there’s that.

The defeat still dings Coupeville’s record, dropping it to 4-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-10 overall, heading into Senior Night Feb. 7 against Friday Harbor.

After that the playoffs, and a new batch of scorebook keepers, await.

No matter what score you ultimately go with from Friday’s rumble, the game was decided by the scoring of La Conner sisters Nora and Maeve McCormick, who combined for 21 points to outpace the Wolves.

Led by the sibling assassins, the Braves bolted to a 10-6 lead through one quarter of play, before slightly stretching the lead out to 17-10 at the half.

Coupeville put together its best offensive output in the third quarter, however, rattling the rim for 15 points and cutting the deficit to 28-25 with eight minutes left to play.

Five different Wolves scored in the third, with Lyla Stuurmans, Teagan Calkins, and Katie Marti all draining three-balls from deep.

La Conner held on in the end, with slightly better free throw shooting (12-21 vs. 7-16) helping the Braves make up for losing the battle of treys 5-2.

CHS spread out its offense, with Lyla Stuurmans and Mia Farris each banking in seven points, while Calkins and Marti popped for six apiece.

Jada Heaton (3), Haylee Armstrong (3), and Tenley Stuurmans (2) also scored, with Madison McMillan bringing intensity to the defensive side of the floor.
