Big sis Maddy Neitzel prepares to get loud ‘n proud.

The cheer gene is strong in their family.

Maddy Neitzel and lil’ sis Amanda (Neitzel) Score remain two of the most-electrifying athletes to ever grace the hallways of Coupeville High School.

The duo were Wolf cheerleaders, loyal to the cause from “toe to bow,” front and center on some extremely-enthusiastic squads, and their impact lingers long after they have headed out into the real world.

Both sisters live in Arizona now, but haven’t been forgotten by Coupeville fans.

And the siblings still have Whidbey connections, as their romantic unions stretch back to their days in a CHS uniform.

Amanda, a 2017 grad, married her high school sweetheart, former Wolf baseball player Kory Score.

Meanwhile, Maddy, who earned her high school diploma in 2016, is engaged to fellow Coupeville alum T.J. Stream.

Amanda celebrates the end of her high school days with classmate Megan DePorter.

Jump back in time when the Neitzel sisters were walking the CHS hallways and patrolling the sidelines at Mickey Clark Field, and one thing remains fixed in memory.

And that is how genuinely full of light the siblings were (and, surely, still are).

Smart, strong, and very kind, the Neitzels brought high energy to their cheer game, and were capable of flying high into the heavens, or making the skies rumble with their impassioned vocal work and stunts.

All cheerleaders, whether they’re seasoned pros or green newbies, have at least a bit of that in them. Otherwise they wouldn’t have stepped up and claimed the uniform.

But Maddy and Amanda set themselves apart from the pack by having an extra measure of energy, an ability to work as part of a team while always poppin’ out from the crowd.

They didn’t intentionally try to steal the spotlight from their fellow cheerleaders, but it was always obvious there was something special about the Neitzel sisters.

Maddy and Amanda had that magical quality only a few genuinely have.

They were stars, pure and simple.

It’s why, after hundreds of Wolf cheerleaders have come and gone at CHS, the Neitzels still burn bright in our memories.

They had impact. They were truly memorable.

So today they enter the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, joining a select group of cheerleaders to earn entry into our digital shrine to excellence.

After this, the Neitzel sisters can be found hanging out at the top of the blog, under the Legends tab.

One word which perfectly fits two sisters.

They are loud ‘n proud, two pint-sized wonders who pack a big cheer punch.

Coupeville High School cheerleaders Maddy Neitzel and Julie Bucio are separated by a couple of years in age (the former is a senior, the latter a freshman), but they’re united by their birthday and their bright, shining spirits.

You couldn’t ask for two friendlier, more outgoing, smart and kind young women to rep our town.

As key members of the Wolf cheer squad, the duo were front and center at a ton of games this school year, and they both radiated school spirit and a love for inspiring their classmates and local fans.

Working as hard as anyone at CHS, the duo, and their cheer teammates, have consistently proven they should be viewed in the same light as other Wolf athletes, since that’s what they are — athletes.

Away from the arena, both display big skills in the classroom (science calls to Bucio while Neitzel is all about art), and, when I interviewed them for articles, a love of family was what drove both of these strong young women.

As the duo celebrate their joint cake day, we, the fans who see a slice of their lives play out in front of us, want to send both of them big happy birthday wishes.

Maddy, Julie, you are both amazing and I have no doubt you will continue to scale new heights as you move forward with your lives.

Happy birthday, ladies!

The cheer is strong in them.

Seven Wolf cheerleaders ruled the sidelines at Mickey Clark Field for the final time Friday night.

Before the game, and the deluge of rain, it was fairly nice outside, which allowed our newest rovin’ photo man, CHS basketball star Gabe Wynn, to snap these pics as Senior Night festivities played out.

Amanda

Two Neitzels on the same cheer team? Five times the awesomeness, as lil’ sis Amanda joins big sis Maddy.

Three weeks in and not an ounce of their spirit has faded.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad remains the loudest and the proudest in all the land, and, at some point, Wolf fans will actually get to see them work the sidelines at home during a varsity football game.

CHS travels to Port Townsend this Friday for its fourth consecutive road game to open the season, but, after that, the Wolves are home four Fridays in October.

Want to see how veteran cheerleaders like Jovanah Foote and Lainey Dickson or young guns like Katherine Morales do once we reach fog season?

Get your buns to Mickey Clark Field Oct. 2 (Klahowya), Oct. 9 (Port Townsend), Oct. 16 (Chimacum — Homecoming) and Oct. 30 (Concrete), and prepare to be impressed.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad doesn’t mess around.

You put on even a JV game, and there will be at least 20 Wolves front and center and ready to work the sidelines, no matter the score or the weather conditions.

And while the entire CHS cheer roster wasn’t there Monday, enough of it was to raise the roof (if Mickey Clark Field had a roof) from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.

Like I said, they don’t mess around.
