Grab one for the road.

The Penn Cove Brewing Company, which was launched by Coupeville High School grads Mitch and Marc Aparicio in 2016, is closing in two days.

The closure affects all of the company’s locations.

The announcement:

Dear Penn Cove Members and Customers:

It is with a heavy heart that we share the unfortunate news of the closure of Penn Cove Brewing Co. as of the close of business, January 21, 2024.

After much consideration and a thorough evaluation of our financial situation, we have had to make the difficult decision to cease operations.

The decision was not made lightly, and we want to express our deepest apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment this may cause you.

As valued members of our Penn Cove Brewing Co. community, your support has been the backbone of our establishment, and we are truly sorry for any impact this closure may have on your experience with us.

We understand that Penn Cove Brewing Co. has been more than just a place to enjoy great beer; it has been a gathering space, a community hub, and a shared experience for all of us.

The decision to close has been a painful one, and we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for the memories, friendships, and moments we have shared together.

In the coming days, we will be working to facilitate the closure process, and we are committed to providing support and information during this transition.

Because of this closure there may be new opportunities for entrepreneurs and/or investors to buy part of, or the entire company.

If you have any questions about the prospect of ownership, or future partnerships, please feel free to reach out to me directly at marc@penncovebrewing.com for details.

We want to sincerely thank our Members and the Whidbey community for being a part of the Penn Cove Brewing Co. family.

Your presence and support have made a significant impact, and we are grateful for the community that has grown around our brewery.

While this chapter is coming to an end for us, we hope that the memories and connections made at Penn Cove Brewing Co. will stay with you.

It has been our privilege to serve you, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Thank you for understanding,

Sincerely,

Marc Aparicio

Penn Cove Brewing Co.

Coupeville High School baseball coach Marc Aparicio resigned effective Thursday. (John Fisken photo)

Coaching changes continue at Coupeville High School.

Wolf varsity baseball coach Marc Aparicio has resigned his post, effective immediately, after accepting a new Department of Defense job.

The position requires travel and enough time away from home, especially during baseball season, that it presented substantial scheduling problems.

Aparicio, who also runs the Penn Cove Taproom with brother Mitch, said he greatly enjoyed his time as a coach, but needed to make the decision that was best for his family.

Baseball joins boys basketball, cheer and girls soccer as the fourth CHS program to have a coaching change this school year.

JV coach Chris Smith has been promoted to head coach and will debut in the post Friday against Port Townsend.

He’ll be aided by longtime Wolf assistant coach Mike Etzell, as well as volunteers Aaron Lucero, Josh Welshans and Steve Hilborn.

Aparicio finished 14-15 in a little under a season-and-a-half of helming his alma mater’s hardball program.

The Wolves went 10-12 last season, going 7-2 in Olympic League play to capture the program’s first league title in 25 years.

CHS is 4-3 overall, 0-1 in league play, this year.

Coupeville High School issued the following press release:

Effective on Thursday, Mar. 30th, Marc Aparicio will be stepping down as Head Baseball Coach due to job re-location.

It is difficult being a head coach and not employed by the school district and as Marc’s job situation became such that it would require him to miss time with the baseball program, he made the difficult decision to resign and have his assistants continue coaching, making the transition as seamless and least impactful as possible.

I completely understand and support Marc in his decision as he needs to take care of himself and his family and fully appreciate the difficulty in the decision he had to make.

I’d like to thank Marc and appreciate his time and effort that he made while Head Coach here in Coupeville and wish him nothing but the best.

Athletic Director

Bastion

The Aparicio boys, hanging out with the pros at the Bastion Brewing Company in Anacortes.

The boys have been busy, brewing up a surprise or two for everyone.

Marc and Mitch Aparicio, Coupeville athletic legends turned high-flying business owners, are about to hit their one-year anniversary with The Penn Cove Brewing Company.

The brothers timed the opening of the business’s physical location, The Penn Cove Taproom (103 S. Main) to last year’s Penn Cove Mussel Fest and will be going big for this year’s event.

They’ll have different bands performing Mar. 3-5 (during the kick-off Friday and the two days of the weekend-long fest itself), while offering their patented mix of tasty brews and snacks.

The outside seating will be open (as locals bargain with the weather Gods for a snow-less fest) and the place will be hoppin’.

But that hoppin’ actually gets going a couple of days earlier, when the Aparicios debut their first original craft beer Mar. 1 at 6 PM.

Brewed in conjunction with Bastion Brewing Company in Anacortes, “Madrona Way IPA” is rumored to be the taste sensation that’s gonna be sweepin’ the nation.

Desribed by Marc Aparicio as “a nice, full-bodied IPA, just a little bitter but delicious, a true Northwest taste,” the new brew is the first in what the brothers hope will be a long line of locally-created product.

The Aparicios would like to be able to brew in Coupeville sooner rather than later, but, for their first venture, hooked up with Bastion, a newer company which is already earning a solid rep in the business.

Marc and Mitch worked hands-on in the process, learning the art of brewing first-hand from Bastion’s pros.

The finished product, which combines Columbus, Citra and Simcoe hops, comes in at 6.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) and 75 IBU (International Bitterness Units).

Rumors that a line has begun to form outside The Taproom to be first to try the “Madrona Way IPA” could be true. You’ll have to go see for yourself.

Might want to go get in the car now, just to be safe.
