They made things easy on the photographer.

Thanks to a last-second change in the schedule, the Coupeville High School JV football squad ended up playing Monday in Oak Harbor.

That was enough to lure wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken out of his nearby home and away from the Halloween candy.

We’re still waiting on any candy, though…

Matt Hilborn (John Fisken photo)

For one bright, shining moment, an upset seemed to be brewing.

Then reality reared its head.

In the time it took for one pass to head the wrong way, the chances the Coupeville High School JV football squad would upend host Oak Harbor Monday went from “hey now…” to “no, sir.”

One second, the Wolves were knocking on the door, the next Wildcat defensive back Ashton Prats had firmly slammed that door shut.

And while the Wildcat sophomore was hauled down two yards shy of a 76-yard pick six, the play changed the whole tone of the game, which eventually finished with Oak Harbor rolling to a 52-8 win.

Before Prats grabbed the spotlight, for the first, but not last time, Coupeville was holding its own with its big city neighbors.

The Halloween afternoon game was put together at the last second, after Marysville-Pilchuck bailed on Oak Harbor.

Lil’ 1A Coupeville, which had a gap in its schedule thanks to Chimacum not fielding a JV squad, stepped up to the challenge and headed up Island to play the 3A Wildcats in their 3,000-seat, turf-field-rockin’, covered stadium.

Half the Wolf JV roster is made up of freshmen, while Oak Harbor limited themselves to just 15 or so JV-level sophomores plucked from their 59-player roster.

The Wildcat freshmen didn’t see action, as they have a game scheduled for later in the week.

After a 45-yard punt from Matt Hilborn pinned Oak Harbor deep in its own territory, the Wolf defense played strongly on the ‘Cats opening drive.

Gavin Knoblich hauled one runner down from behind, snagging him by the back of his shoe, and Coupeville forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to get the ball back.

Sitting pretty with first-and-10 from the Wildcat 24, Wolf QB Dawson Houston went to the air and had a man open … until Prats jumped the play, snagged the ball and was off like a rocket down the left sideline.

CHS forced him out at the two-yard line, but Prats made up for it on the next play, slamming in for a touchdown run to open the scoring.

There was plenty more of that to come, as Oak Harbor tacked on four scores in the second half and another three in the third to trigger a running clock.

Prats and ultra-speedy Zion Gomez racked up three TD’s apiece, while Cody Fenton and Juan Luna-Elliot chipped in with a score each.

Two of the touchdowns came on passes from ‘Cat QB Taylor Rummel, while the Oak Harbor running game hummed along behind a stout line led by Joseph Orr.

Coupeville bent, but didn’t break, twice blocking PAT attempts.

On the first one Jake Hoagland came roaring around from the outside and took the ball in the middle of his back, while on the second stuff Andrew Martin came up the middle to get his hands on the ball.

Martin also teamed up with Luke Carlson to blow up a running play in the backfield in the fourth quarter, bringing the Wildcat runner down for a big loss and forcing a turnover on downs.

The Wolves finally cracked the end zone themselves in the final quarter.

Hilborn, giving Houston a breather, ripped off a 15-yard run, then hit Jonathan Thurston on a 27-yard bomb to set things up.

Camped on Oak Harbor’s 10-yard line, Coupeville turned a bad play into a brilliant one.

Snagging a high snap over his head, Hilborn started right, spun back to the left, then ran over three defenders as he scooted in for the touchdown.

He then tacked on a two-point conversion, accounting for all of the Wolf scoring himself.

Houston spent much of the game scrambling for his life, but he still completed seven passes, with Hoagland hauling in five of those.

Matthew Shreffner and Thurston also had snags on balls thrown their way.

They are big reward athletes.

Risen Johnson and Matt Hilborn, who share a birthday today, are both guys who dance on the line between huge success and huge failure, but, more often than not, pull it off for the win.

Hilborn, who just wrapped his freshman baseball season at Coupeville High School by being tabbed as an All-League selection, compiled some astounding plays at third base for the Wolves.

Quick to charge the ball, quick to believe he could make any throw, even when the throw was going to have be a laser launched while Hilborn’s body twisted in mid-air, he had some slick glove moves.

Like most younger players, he had his ups and his downs, but when he was up he showed you just what rival coaches appreciated so much.

A key part of the first Coupeville baseball squad to win a league title in 25 years, Hilborn, who is also a rising star on the gridiron, has a bright future for the red and black.

Johnson, by contrast, just wrapped his run at CHS, graduating with the Class of 2016 a few weeks back.

Before he went, he gave us two electrifying seasons on the basketball hardwood, pulling off moves that few, if any, Wolves have ever been able to accomplish.

A point-scoring machine (and an underrated defender), Johnson could pull up and nail the jumper over outstretched arms.

But more often than not, he preferred to get his buckets by employing a heapin’ helpin’ of Showtime.

Ripping down court, slicing ‘n dicing backpedaling defenders, gliding through the air and somehow getting the ball to drop off the backboard when he threw it up through a maze of arms at the last second, he was flat-out fun to watch.

A soft-spoken fashion plate off the court, Risen always played with great joy, and the only downside is we didn’t get a full four years from him.

Maybe he’ll grow a beard and sneak back into school disguised as a foreign exchange student…

Except one whirlin’, twirlin’, eyeball-poppin’ display of mad hoops skills and everyone would know the truth. Oh well.

For now, we’ll just thank Risen for making the last two years a regular thrill show and wish him and Matt a happy joint cake day.

May your birthdays be as exciting as your style of play.

With a 9-0 win over Port Townsend Thursday, Joey Lippo and Coupeville are in first place in the 1A Olympic League. (John Fisken photo)

This is how you break a losing streak.

Hot bats. A torrid pitching performance. Contributions from the top of the lineup to the bottom.

Riding a 13-strikeout complete-game performance from senior hurler CJ Smith, the Coupeville High School baseball squad rediscovered its winning ways Thursday afternoon.

Playing under a blazing sun on the prairie, the Wolves routed visiting Port Townsend 9-0 to snap a four-game skid and claim, at least for the moment, sole possession of first place in the 1A Olympic League.

Coupeville is 3-5 overall, 1-0 in league play and will have three non-league games (all on the road) before they face off with another league foe.

That won’t be until Apr. 14, when the Wolves travel to Chimacum.

Up first are con-conference games at South Whidbey, La Conner and Blaine, with the all-Island showdown coming Saturday in Langley.

JV kicks off a doubleheader at 10, with varsity set for noon.

Facing off with the RedHawks Thursday, Coupeville came out guns blazing.

CJ Smith retired the side in order in four of seven innings, scattering just a pair of hits while getting almost two-thirds of his outs via the punch-out.

The Wolves broke the game open in the bottom of the third, sending their first four hitters in the inning (Matt Hilborn, Hunter Smith, CJ Smith and Cole Payne) across the plate.

The first two scored on Port Townsend errors, while the latter two were knocked in by a blow from first baseman Kory Score.

CHS added three in the fifth and another two in the sixth — Hilborn, Cameron Toomey-Stout and Nick Etzell all chipped in with RBIs — getting something from everyone in a shuffled lineup.

“Everybody had great at-bats,” said Coupeville coach Marc Aparicio. “We switched it up and slid some guys in off the bench and were able to get some different looks.

“Port Townsend is a very solid team, but we really got a lot out of the bottom of our lineup today.”

Matt Hilborn (John Fisken photo)

Matt Hilborn wasted little time.

The Coupeville High School freshman stepped right on the field Monday, starting for the Wolf varsity baseball squad and making an immediate impact in the first game of a new season.

Playing in a one-run game against Sultan, he took the mound in the seventh, after previously playing at third, and set the side down one-two-three to give the Wolves a fighting chance.

His success in his high school debut was the continuation of a long run that started when he first played t-ball at age five.

Hilborn’s dad, Steve, a longtime local coach, got Matt started and he’s come to love the diamond game.

“I enjoy defense mostly and pitching, because baseball is the only sport where you start with the ball on defense,” Hilborn said. “I think my strengths are playing middle infield and third, and also pitching.”

A two-sport athlete at CHS (he also played football in the fall, starring for the JV and getting some snaps and a tackle at the varsity level), he enjoys spending time with friends and chooses gym as his favorite class.

For the moment, he’s intently focused on baseball, and wants to continue to improve on the stellar work he put in Monday.

“I would like to work on hitting,” Hilborn said. “My goals for the season are to play varsity and hit/pitch well.”

He credits his extended family for all chipping in to help make him the player he is fast becoming.

“Shout out to my parents for making me the person I am,” Hilborn said. “They have had a big impact on my baseball career.

“Also my cousin Justin and uncle Charlie helped me get better at baseball.”
