Former Wolf star returns for second coaching gig

Wolf legend Megan Smith is returning to coach middle school basketball after taking a year off.

The prodigal coach returns.

After taking a year off to focus on her real-world job as a teacher, former Wolf legend Megan Smith will be back on the Coupeville Middle School basketball sidelines this winter.

Smith, who coached the 7th grade girls to a 6-4 mark in 2017, has been hired to the same position, though she still needs the school board to officially rubber stamp the move.

Her old job opened up because Alex Evans, who coached the 7th grade program in 2018, has followed his players and moved up to 8th grade for this season.

The previous 8th grade coach, Dustin Van Velkinburgh, resigned after last season so he could devote more time to family. That includes watching oldest daughter Kylie play her freshman season in high school.

Smith, a 2010 graduate of CHS, was a three-time Female Athlete of the Year and 12-time letter winner while competing in volleyball, basketball and softball.

She sits as the #4 scorer in Wolf girls basketball history, having tossed in 1,042 points across her four seasons on the court.

After graduation, Smith played basketball for Peninsula College, where she was joined by former Coupeville teammate Ashley Manker.

When she’s not coaching basketball, Smith is a teacher at the Skagit/Islands Head Start in Mount Vernon.

   A new teaching job will prevent Wolf legend Megan Smith from continuing as a CMS basketball coach.

One legend down.

Megan Smith, who made the jump from Coupeville High School hoops star to middle school coach, is stepping away from running the CMS 7th grade girls basketball team.

At least for a bit.

Smith’s new real-world job, as a teacher with Hand in Hand Head Start, which allows her to follow in the footsteps of mom Cherie, requires a detour out of the gym.

“With my new job, the hours just don’t work out,” Smith said. “But I do plan on returning eventually!

“So don’t count me out. I’m not done forever, just for now.”

Smith went 6-4 in her one year at the helm of the 7th grade program.

Her departure means both CMS girls basketball jobs are open, since 8th grade coach Ryan King stepped down after last season.

Before graduating from CHS in 2010, Smith was a 12-time letter winner (volleyball, basketball and softball) who was voted the school’s Female Athlete of the Year three straight times.

She is the fourth-leading scorer in Wolf girls basketball history with 1,042 points.

No word yet on whether her departure from the coaching ranks will make Coupeville Athletic Director (and dad) Willie Smith remove Megan from his will.

Wolves knife Forks!!

Give them time and they will win.

Coupeville Middle School sent two girls basketball squads to the far-off wilds of Forks Thursday, but only one got to play an entire game.

The Wolf 7th graders took advantage of playing an entire 32 minutes and romped to a 29-14 win over the host Spartans, evening their season mark at 2-2.

By contrast, the CMS 8th graders got yanked off the court prematurely, sent back to the bus so the Wolves could make the long trip home without missing the ferry.

So, instead of any second-half comebacks, the veterans settled for a 16-4 “loss” in a game missing its final 12+ minutes.

“I don’t base a game off the score, but for the effort and fight during the game,” said CMS 8th grade coach Ryan King. “Each game these girls fight and fight.

“We may come up short, but they always never quit and never let anything bring them down,” he added. “I am truly proud of these girls and we will continue to fight throughout the rest of the season.”

The young guns came out blazing, dropping in 10 points in the first quarter and putting Forks back on its heels.

By the time they were done, the Wolf 7th graders had three girls — Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Audrianna Shaw and Anya Leavell — each hit for eight points.

Ja’Kenya Hoskins banged home three and Samantha Streitler dropped in two to round out the scoring attack.

“My girls have been playing so well lately!,” said 7th grade coach Megan Smith. “I can’t wait to watch them succeed throughout this program!

“They have improved immensely already and continue to do so everyday! I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to work with.”

CMS girls kick-off season with a bang!!

Chalk up one for the next generation.

Megan Smith’s debut as a coach was a winning one, as the former Wolf hoops legend led her Coupeville Middle School 7th grade girls’ squad to a 24-17 win at Chimacum in its season opener.

The Cowboys rebounded to get a split, taking down the undermanned CMS 8th graders 40-21.

7th grade:

Smith, a three-time CHS Athlete of the Year before graduating in 2010, is returning to her old stomping grounds and following in the (large) coaching footsteps of parents Willie and Cherie Smith.

She immediately found the right mix, getting offensive pop from Anya Leavell, who went off for 10 points, and a team-wide commitment on D.

“We played some tough, fundamental defense,” Smith said. “We played incredibly hard and ended up with the outcome we deserved! Super proud of the team.”

Ja’Kenya Hoskins and Audrianna Shaw tickled the twines for six apiece to back up Leavell, while Kylie Van Velkinburgh drained a bucket to round out the scoring.

8th grade:

With just four 8th graders playing basketball, Wolf coach Ryan King is using a mix of 7th graders to fill out his roster.

8th grader Chelsea Prescott paced CMS with a team-high 10 points, while 7th grader Izzy Wells knocked down six in support.

Genna Wright (2), Samantha Streitler (2) and Heidi Clinkscales (1) rounded out the scoring attack, while Mollie Bailey and Kiara Contreras were their usual feisty selves.

“Overall, I was proud of all the girls. They fought hard from start to finish,” King said. “Every girl played hard. Great group of girls and proud of all of them.”

Megan Smith

   Megan Smith, who repped the Wolf uniform as well as any hoops player ever, has returned to coach the next generation.

The prodigal daughter has returned.

When Coupeville Middle School kicks off its girls basketball season at Chimacum Thursday, the Wolves will boast two coaches, one sorta old school and one definitely new school.

Ryan King is returning for his final go-around before taking a sabbatical and will lead the 8th grade squad.

Meanwhile, in news ready to set the internet afire, legendary former CHS hoops star Megan Smith will make her debut calling the shots for the 7th graders.

Smith, a 12-time letter winner during her days at Coupeville High School, was a star in volleyball, basketball and softball.

She claimed the school’s Female Athlete of the Year three straight years and remains firmly in the top 1% of athletes to ever pull on a Wolf uniform.

After graduating with the Class of 2010, Smith went on to play college ball and is now returning to pass on the lessons learned to a new generation.

Her hiring will become official once approved by the school board at their next meeting.
