318 teams. 2 Wolves.

Not getting lost in the mass confusion that was the Washington Rush Cup, Coupeville sisters Mia and Kalia Littlejohn helped guide their select soccer squad into the semifinals this weekend.

The Littlejohns, fellow Islander Jenna Cooley and their teammates on Northwest United FC G’00 Black split four games over three days.

They opened with a close 2-0 loss to Crossfire Premier Friday, then rebounded to thrash Washington Rush 2-0 in a nightcap.

A 3-0 victory over Thurston County United Saturday put them in third place among the 10 teams in their flight, with the top four advancing to action Sunday.

Down several players due to church commitments and injuries, Northwest United played without any subs in its semifinal match, where it fell 2-0 to the (aptly named) Academy of Soccer Excellence.

“The girls played hard. Mia, Kalia and Jenna ran their little booties off,” said team manager Dawn Hesselgrave.

Mia came close a few times of putting it in the net,” she added. “It was a white knuckle game.”

The tournament, held on a 900-acre complex in Snohomish, was a massive one, with one team for every three acres by the time the draw was complete.

It was the first of back-to-back weekends the Littlejohns will be on the road for premier level tourneys.

Northwest United plays in the Phillips 66 Rimland Challenge in Bellingham next weekend.

California invasion, successful.

Coupeville High School junior booter Mia Littlejohn played four games in three days this weekend, helping the Bellingham Rangers finish 3rd in an eight-team flight at the Pleasanton Rage Tournament.

Littlejohn was one of four guest players for the Rangers, who finished 2-1-1 at the tourney.

Bellingham was one of two select girls’ soccer teams reppin’ Washington state, with the Rush G99 squad taking the tourney title.

There were five Californian teams and one squad from Utah also in their flight.

The Rangers absorbed their only loss Friday, when they were nipped 1-0 by Outlaws FC ’00G Black of Utah.

That was the only goal Bellingham gave up during the tourney.

Saturday was a rebound day, with the Rangers waxing two Cali teams — shutting out Placer United 98G Black 3-0 and slipping past Ajax East Bay AEB 99G 1-0.

Bellingham closed out play Sunday with a hard-fought scoreless tie against Davis Legacy 98 White.

Littlejohn played the entire way in all four games, as the Rangers had no subs for the tourney.

While she had to stay back on Whidbey (she’ll get to see the games later thanks to someone taping them) proud mom Dawn Hesselgrave was over the moon to see her oldest daughter get another crack at playing in a top-tier event.

Mia really enjoyed playing with the team and the challenge it offered,” Hesselgrave said. “Sometimes you need the challenge in order to keep you interested and motivated.”

The season never stops.

Coupeville High School junior Mia Littlejohn plays soccer nearly year-round, finding time to weave basketball into the picture as well.

All that time and effort continues to pay off, as she has been invited to play for yet another high-level team.

This time around it’s the Bellingham Ranger 98/99 premier team, which is headed off to California for a three-day tourney next weekend.

The Rangers will vie in The Rage College Showcase in Pleasanton June 22-24.

A prime opportunity for Littlejohn and teammates to be scouted by college coaches, the tourney will consist of four games in three days.

Bellingham opens against a team from Utah June 22, then plays two games against California squads the next day.

The Rangers wrap things with a final game against a team from California June 24.

Along with the college showcase Littlejohn will play in two tourneys in early August with her normal premier team.

Playing alongside sister Kalia, Mia is scheduled to take part in The Rush Cup and the Phillips 66 Rimland Challenge.

It’s a birthday bonanza.

Two of Coupeville’s best and brightest, Jasmine Melena and Mia Littlejohn, celebrate joint cake days Saturday and the festivities sweep the nation.

The duo are united by the soccer pitch, while Littlejohn is also a Wolf hoops star and Melena has suited up for the CHS softball squad.

Regardless of the field of battle they take, both Jasmine and Mia are exemplary young women, whose personalities bring a noticeable spark to all they do.

Littlejohn is fast emerging as one of the most innovative of all Wolf athletes, a firecracker who never backs down and creates magic on the fly.

From the “Jersey girl” at the middle school level who juked foes out of their shoes, spun them around and left them flat on their butt as she sped by, to the more seasoned team leader she is becoming, Mia is part of the gold standard for Coupeville athletes.

A quiet warrior who lets her skills do much of the talking for her, the Wolf sophomore is on her way to being something truly special.

Melena is an ideal role player, the sort who is always there to support her teammates, and, when she’s not playing, often pops up in the stands at other events to cheer on her classmates.

Jasmine always exudes a remarkably serene spirit, and the Wolf junior is truly indispensable.

As the duo celebrate their big day, we just want to take a moment to pop in and wish them both the best, today and every day.

Happy birthday, and may your futures remain as bright as your present.

They almost threw a shutout.

Using an opportunistic, scrambling defense, the Couepville High School girls’ basketball squad held visiting Port Townsend scoreless for nearly a quarter-and-a-half to kick off Friday night’s game.

And, while they finally did give up a bucket at the 4:25 mark of the second quarter, the Wolves stayed almost as stingy the entire game, freezing out the RedHawks en route to a 29-14 win.

The victory, which capped a long week in which the Wolves faced finals at school while playing three games in five days — two on the road — lifted CHS to 10-4 overall, 4-0 in league play.

Coupeville, the defending league champs, once again sits atop the 1A Olympic League, with Klahowya (2-2), Chimacum (1-3) and Port Townsend (1-3) trying to play catch-up.

While they maybe didn’t play perfect on this night, they kept their record perfect by bringing the heat on ‘D’.

“In the first half we definitely played strong defense; our help defense was there,” said Coupeville coach David King. “I love that we had that energy.”

He would have liked a little stronger showing on the boards, though, as the RedHawks controlled the rebounding game early, but could not get a shot to go down.

No matter what they tried.

Shot after shot slid off the rim for Port Townsend, caught a bad bounce on the glass or started to drop, only to pop back out.

In the early going, Coupeville wasn’t much luckier themselves, as the two teams combined to go scoreless until the 3:37 mark of the first quarter.

The Wolves finally broke through when Lauren Grove banked in a long jumper from the left side, getting the ball to rattle around before it settled through the twines with a sigh.

Of course, that sigh might have come from anxious Wolf fans.

If it did, it changed to a roar in an instant, as Mia Littlejohn drained a pull-up trey from the top on the very next possession, effectively ending the game at 5-0.

While that might sound a bit extreme, it’s not, as Port Townsend could not get anything going on offense, no matter what they tried.

After a Makana Stone put-back staked the Wolves to a 7-0 lead at the end of one, Coupeville finally surrendered a runner in the key, then closed the half out with an 8-0 run.

Littlejohn and Stone each dropped in four during the surge, with the best bucket coming on a vintage coast-to-coast rampage by Coupeville’s lone senior.

On that play, Stone went to the ceiling to absolutely crush a Port Townsend shot.

Having snagged the loose ball off of the block, she hit the rocket boosters in her shoes and promptly out-ran everyone to the other end for a swooping, slicing lay-up.

Port Townsend’s shooting touch warmed up just a bit in the second half, as they finally struggled into double digits in the fourth quarter, but they never truly threatened the Wolves.

Coupeville ran the lead out to 29-10, off of back-to-back buckets from Kailey Kellner, on a beautiful pump fake and drive, and Stone, before the RedHawks tossed in two baskets in the final seconds.

Stone paced the Wolves with 12 points, 18 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals, while Littlejohn banged away for nine points, seven boards and two assists.

Kellner (four points, three rebounds) and Grove (four points, two rebounds) rounded out the Wolf scorers.

Mia played well tonight,” King said. “She was aggressive on defense and helped us get going on offense early on.

Lauren Grove hit a couple big shots for us, as well.”

Lindsey Roberts (3), Skyler Lawrence (3), Tiffany Briscoe (2) and Kyla Briscoe (2) all chipped in on the boards, while Lauren Rose and Allison Wenzel were relentless on defense during their floor time.
