The Wolves are everywhere.

With spring upon us, at least three former Coupeville High School players are suiting up to play college softball.

Madeline Roberts is a sophomore at Shoreline Community College while Hailey Hammer and Monica Vidoni are freshmen at, respectively, Everett Community College and Rainy River Community College.

All three teams are slated to start play this weekend, with Hammer and Vidoni’s squads getting the first games.

Appearing at a tournament in the Tri-Cities, Hammer played two games against Columbia Basin College Friday, then took the field for a double-header Saturday against Yakima Valley CC.

Battling a balky back, she played defense only in the openers, but on day two, talked her coach into letting her swing a bat.

In her first official at-bat as a regular-season college player Hammer blasted a resounding double, then followed that up with a couple singles and a handful of RBIs.

Proving she can hurt foes in multiple ways, she also played small ball when necessary.

“My coach really preaches that it’s a team game and not personal,” Hammer said. “So I bunted to move the runners and hit behind the runners to get them to score.”

Vidoni and her team are in Florida, where the Voyageurs opened with a split against fellow Minnesota teams.

After losing 3-0 to St. Cloud in the opener (Vidoni had the lone Rainy River hit), RRCC rebounded to down Itasca 6-3 in its second game.

She rapped another base hit in the nightcap and hauled in several fly balls while roaming the outfield.

It was a strong opening for the Wolf grad, who also has played volleyball and basketball this season.

“I was excited,” Vidoni said.

The regular season is in the books. Now comes the playoffs.

Former Coupeville High School basketball player Monica Vidoni and her Rainy River Community College women’s basketball squad will play in the Region 13B tourney next weekend.

The Voyageurs finished the regular season at 15-10 overall, 9-5 in Minnesota College Athletic Conference play.

They tied with Mesabi Range and Itasca for second place, but will be seeded fourth in the postseason.

That puts them up against top seed Northland, which is ranked third in the country, in a loser-out game Saturday, Feb. 27 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.

Pull off the upset and they play the winner of Mesabi and Itasca Feb. 28 for a berth in the NJCAA national tournament in New York Mar. 12-14.

During her freshman season Vidoni, who is also playing volleyball and softball at the college, saw action in 19 games.

She’s scored 16 points, snatched 24 rebounds, rejected three shots and pilfered two steals while racking up 118 minutes of floor time.

During her time at CHS Vidoni was a three-sport athlete and was on the Wolf softball team which went to state in 2014.

Got a buck or two to help a former Wolf?

Monica Vidoni, who is currently a freshman at Rainy River Community College in Minnesota, is looking for help to get to Florida with her softball squad.

The Voyageurs will be traveling down there during the first week of March for a five-day tournament, and each player needs to raise $1000 for plane tickets and uniforms.

Vidoni, a 2015 graduate of CHS, is currently in the second of her three sports seasons at Rainy River.

She started with volleyball, is currently playing basketball and then will join softball, mirroring the sports she played as a high school athlete.

Monica Vidoni is upping the ante.

The Coupeville High School grad is deep into her second sport at Rainy River Community College in Minnesota, making her one of the few Wolves in recent years to play multiple sports at the collegiate level.

Now 10 games into a 25-game womens’ basketball season, which comes on the heels of a volleyball season, Vidoni is back on Whidbey for winter break.

When she and her Voyageurs teammates return to the court Jan. 6, they will carry a 5-5 record into battle with Fond du Luc Tribal.

Rainy River will play nine games in Jan., then wrap up its regular season with six more in Feb.

The Voyaguers have been led by sophomore Shania Thompson, who is averaging 24.8 points per game.

Freshmen Cassie Tomczak (13.2) and Maddie Filipiak (13.1) round out a dangerous trio.

Vidoni has played in eight of her team’s 10 games, scoring 12 points and hauling down 14 rebounds.

Her best game came against Itasca, when she dropped in four points and corralled five rebounds.

Vidoni also came up big against Fond du Lac, when she snagged five boards, and Anoka-Ramsey, where she drilled all four of her free throw opportunities.

A 2015 CHS grad, she played volleyball, basketball and softball all four years she was a Wolf and was a key supporting player on the 2014-2015 girls’ basketball squad which won the school’s first league title in 13 years.

At least two former Wolf basketball stars are taking their game to the college court this winter.

Coupeville High School grads Bessie Walstad and Monica Vidoni are lacing up and running lines, continuing to pursue the hoops dream.

After taking a couple of years off, Walstad, a 2013 CHS grad, has picked the game back up in Oregon, where she attends George Fox University.

She’s playing for the Bruins JV squad, and getting back on the court at the NCAA D-III school has been a thrill.

“It is tons of fun!,” Walstad said.

Vidoni, a 2015 grad, is two games into her first hoops season at Rainy River Community College in Minnesota.

The Voyageurs are 2-0, having beaten Fond du Lac Tribal 71-51 and Hibbing 79-62.

Vidoni’s best game came in the opener, when she scored two points, snagged five rebounds and rejected a shot.
