“I love being around football and kids.”

Those are the words of Brett Casey, the new Coupeville Middle School football coach, a man ready to tackle his new job in style.

When the Coupeville School District hired his wife, Melissa Casey, as a Special Education Life Skills teacher this summer, it set off an eventual 2-for-1 deal.

A longtime gridiron ace as a player and coach, Brett Casey then decided to pursue the job opening which appeared when Bob Martin resigned.

Now, a few months later, Casey is in place and raring to go, counting down the days until the first CMS practice Aug. 27.

“When my wife accepted a teaching job, I looked for the opportunity to continue coaching on the island,” he said. “I grew up playing in a small community, and I look forward to returning to that atmosphere as a coach.”

After earning All-State honors in high school as a wide receiver and defensive back, he played in the Down Under Bowl in Australia, before joining the football team at the University of Montana Western.

That’s the same school former Coupeville standout Mitch Pelroy suited up for during his own college football career.

After his playing days came to a close, Casey turned to coaching, and has put in three seasons working at the youth football level and six more with high school teams.

Over the past six years, his teams have posted a combined record of 48-9.

As a coach, Casey is straight-forward, asking his players to give back to the game what it gives to them.

“I would like them to have respect for the game, their teammates, opponents, and officials,” he said. “I would love to see kids excited about football again at CMS.

“Build it into a winning program and a feeder program for CHS.”

While he ultimately guides his team’s strategy, Casey wants his players to develop to the point where they are working with him, and not just for him.

“I enjoy the chess match-like strategy battle that ensues during the game,” he said. “Watching the players grow once they understand the how and why of the game.

“Once the players get that, the game opens up and the players can start giving their input on the offense or defense.”

Mitch Pelroy

Mitch Pelroy likely ended his college football career the way he began it — outrunning folks.

The Coupeville High School grad ripped off one last kickoff return Saturday, and saw action on both sides of the ball, as Montana Western pounded Rocky Mountain College 26-10.

The Bulldogs finished 7-4 overall, 6-4 in Frontier Conference play.

Montana Western has a slim shot at getting an at-large bid to the NAIA playoffs, but a third-place finish in its league will make it tough to earn one of the 16 postseason slots.

If Saturday was the end, Pelroy can walk away knowing he put in a very solid career playing college ball.

Over the course of five years — a red-shirt season plus four on the field — the former Wolf played in 36 games at Montana Western.

He piled up 1,122 yards returning kickoffs and punts, with 314 of that coming during his senior season.

Pelroy also had 55 tackles, 14 assists, two sacks, four tackles for a loss and broke up six passes while playing in the Bulldog secondary.

During his time at CHS, the speed demon was a football, basketball and track star.

He qualified for the state track meet in five different events and held the school record in the 200 until Jacob Smith broke it this spring.

The alumni continue to excel at the next level.

Coupeville High School grads Mitch Pelroy and Monica Vidoni played in different states Saturday, with one coming away a little happier than the other.

Pelroy and his football teammates at Montana Western pulled out a victory on Senior Night, while Vidoni’s Rainy River Community College volleyball team had its season ended a win away from nationals.

The Voyageurs fell in straight sets to Central Lakes in the district final in Minnesota, after winning a five-set thriller against Itasca the day before.

That ends Vidoni’s two-year run as a college spiker, but she still has basketball and softball seasons ahead of her at RRCC.

With his family in attendance, Pelroy ripped off kickoff returns of 35 and 23 yards as Montana Western rallied late to upend Carroll 35-28.

It was the first time the Bulldogs had successfully defended their home turf against Carroll since 1999.

Pelroy, who also had a tackle on defense, has one more regular season game against Rocky Mountain College Nov. 12.

He has 1,109 career return yards over his 35-game college gridiron career.

The end is near, but Mitch Pelroy isn’t slowing down.

The Coupeville High School grad ripped off 55 yards on three kickoff returns Saturday, helping spark Montana Western to a 43-24 thumping of Southern Oregon on the college gridiron.

Pelroy, who has two regular season games remaining in his senior season, has rung up 256 yards on 10 returns this season, pushing his career total to 992 yards bringing back kicks.

Toss in the 59 yards he ground out on punt returns early in his career, and he has 1,051 return yards at the college level.

Pelroy is a two-way warrior for the Bulldogs, having amassed 53 tackles, 14 assists, six broken-up passes, four tackles for a loss and two sacks in his time playing college ball.

Montana Western (5-4 overall, 4-4 in Frontier Conference play) hosts Carroll College Nov. 5 and will honor Pelroy and his fellow vets on Senior Night.

The regular season ends on the road Nov. 12 against Rocky Mountain College.

During his time in Coupeville, Pelroy starred on the gridiron and basketball court, while making it to state in five different events as a track and field athlete.

He competed in the 100, 200, 400, 300 hurdles and 4 x 400 relay at the big dance and held the CHS 200 record until Jacob Smith broke it last spring.

Four digits, achieved.

Former Coupeville High School football star Mitch Pelroy zipped past the 1,000-yard mark for kick returns at the college level.

Taking back three kick-offs for 49 yards Saturday against Montana Tech, he pushed his career total to 1,011 yards in the five years he’s been at Montana Western.

Pelroy also chipped in on defense with three tackles and an assist from his spot in the secondary, but it wasn’t enough to save the Bulldogs, who fell 35-20.

Montana Western, ranked #22 among NAIA teams, is 3-3 overall, 2-3 in Frontier Conference play.

With five regular-season games left in his senior campaign, Pelroy has amassed 952 yards on kickoff returns and 59 on punt returns.

He has 56 tackles, 15 assists, two sacks and five tackles for loss in a 33-game career.

Montana Western returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Bulldogs host the College of Idaho during Hall of Fame weekend in Dillon.
