Maya Lucero and twin sister Allie were lethal at the service stripe. And in the middle of the floor. And at the net. So, basically everywhere.

Their service game? Impeccable.

Throwing down a case of whupass with power and precision Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad obliterated host Mount Vernon Christian.

Combining for 26 service aces, the Wolves gave the Hurricanes little chance to put the ball into play, then ended things viciously when they did.

The final score, a somewhat eye-popping 25-6, 25-1, 25-8, left CHS coach Ashley Menges flying high.

“Last night went great!,” she said. “Allie (Lucero) basically served the whole first set, and Maya (Lucero) basically served the whole second set!”

The Battlin’ Lucero Twins were all over the stat sheet, with Allie recording 13 aces and 20 assists, while Maya notched six kills and five aces.

All seven Wolves to see action Tuesday night were on fire, with Ryanne Knoblich smashing a team-high seven kills.

She added three digs to her work, while Jordyn Rogers (four kills, five aces, two digs) and Grey Peabody (three kills, one assist, one block) chipped in with solid efforts.

Gwen Gustafson (six digs, two aces, a kill) and Olivia Schaffeld (four kills) also sparkled for the Wolves, who sit at 5-2 on the season with two matches to play.

Coupeville hosts La Conner Friday, then closes the season at home against Orcas Island Saturday afternoon.

That second match is a restricted one, with no fans allowed, as Orcas is requiring that this season.

CHS will stream JV and varsity matches on Facebook Live that day.

They are the team to beat, and it won’t be easy.

Mount Vernon Christian is proving to be a formidable foe in the world of girls soccer this season, something which Coupeville was reminded of Wednesday afternoon.

Playing on the road, in their first game in 11 days, the Wolves fell 6-0 to the rampaging Hurricanes.

With the win, MVC improves to 3-0 and has outscored its foes 24-0.

Coupeville falls to 1-2, with both of its losses coming to the Hurricanes.

The Wolves are a half game up on La Conner (0-2), and they face those Braves next Monday in another road game.

With Friday Harbor sitting out all fall sports this time around after Covid case numbers spiked in the San Juans, there are only three Northwest 2B/1B League schools currently playing girls soccer.

With 9-0 and 6-0 wins over Coupeville, and a 9-0 victory over La Conner, MVC seems to have the league title well in hand, with the Wolves and Braves left to battle it out for second-place.

While the Wolves fell Wednesday, CHS coach Kyle Nelson saw improvement in how his squad played.

MVC scored one goal off a penalty kick and two others on corner kicks, with Coupeville keeping the Hurricanes slowed down on their regular attack.

“We were also able to make their goalkeeper work more this time with a number of good shots,” Nelson said. “Definitely an improvement from our first outing against probably one of the best girls soccer teams in 2B/1B.

“Seems like every time we switch leagues we are going up against a state champ.”

That score hit the back of the net after coming off Xavier Murdy’s foot.

Both teams got a bit lucky.

For the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad, just getting back on the pitch Tuesday was a win in itself, as the Wolves had a 10-day gap between games due to other schools cancelling.

For their opponents, Mount Vernon Christian, the luck showed up on the scoreboard, as a couple of perfect bounces on busted plays sent the hometown Hurricanes to a 3-1 win.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-1 during this pandemic-shortened season, but its next two games should arrive a lot sooner, and both will be at home.

The Wolves host Providence Classical Christian Thursday (kickoff is 6 PM), then welcome Orcas Island to Whidbey May 3.

The latter of those games will be Senior Night for Coupeville.

Tuesday afternoon, the Wolves didn’t show any rust, coming off the bus with legs already swinging.

Sam Wynn and Owen Barenburg were “hammering balls everywhere” according to CHS coach Robert Wood, and Coupeville got on the board first.

The score came at the 10-minute mark of the first half, with Aidan Wilson delivering a crisp center cross to Xavier Murdy, who promptly blasted the ball into the back of the waiting net.

It was the second goal of the season for X-Man, tying him with Wilson for the team lead in scoring, and the third of his prep career.

Mount Vernon Christian countered with a goal mere seconds before halftime, getting “a lucky deflection” to knot things up headed into the break.

The Hurricanes then took advantage of several second-half penalty kicks to surge ahead and stay ahead.

The game-busting goal actually came off of a second-shot chance after Wolf goalie Logan Martin blocked the penalty kick, before MVC salted the lead away with a late-game penalty kick which found its way into the net.

Still, the young Wolves, who were facing a Hurricane squad which is “a premier team, with quality players,” had nothing to hang their heads about.

The final score wasn’t in their favor, but the improvement they showed on the pitch certainly was.

Pitch action was on tap Saturday, but with a twist.

Taking a break from regular games, the three Northwest 2B/1B League schools currently playing girls soccer gathered in Mount Vernon for a 3 v 3 tourney.

Splitting his available players into two teams, Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson had a chance to see his players prosper in a different environment.

“A decent day. Back to more typical soccer weather,” he said. “It was a good day to get everyone some time out on the field.”

Both of Coupeville’s teams split a pair of games in group play, then advanced to face each other in the knockout round.

After the “red” team won the inter-team tussle, the winning Wolves faced off with top-seeded Mount Vernon Christian in the semifinals.

While CHS fell 5-2 in that game, “they gave MVC a competitive game,” Nelson said.

Coupeville’s “red” team consisted of Lily Leedy, Ava Mitten, Sophie Martin, Audrianna Shaw, and Camryn Clark.

The Wolves (1-1 on the season) return to regular game play next week, traveling back to Mount Vernon Wednesday, April 28 to face off with the Hurricanes, who sit atop the NWL standings.

“It’s about heart.”

“No, it’s about conditioning.”

“Well, if you have the heart, you’re going to go get the conditioning.”

As we headed into that most pressure-packed of high school sports situations Saturday night — the fifth set of a varsity volleyball match, where two teams make a wild dash to get to 15 points first — the debate raged in the stands.

And then, to the delight of the hometown Coupeville fans, it turned out the Wolf spikers had both heart and conditioning.

Nice.

Capping a comeback from being down two sets to one, CHS pulled out a gut-wrenching 24-26, 25-21, 17-25, 25-11, 15-11 win over visiting Mount Vernon Christian, sending the faithful off to spend the rest of their weekend with smiles on their faces and an extra skip to their step.

Now 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, Coupeville sits solidly in second-place, a game off of two-time defending state champs La Conner, which is 4-0.

MVC, which entered the night unbeaten as well, left Whidbey at 2-1 after fading down the stretch.

The fifth and deciding set opened and closed exactly the same way — with Wolf senior Chelsea Prescott smacking the soul out of the ball for very-convincing winners.

In between those titanic spikes, she got a lot of help from her teammates, with Kylie Chernikoff, Lucy Tenore, and Abby Mulholland coming up big in the spotlight.

Chernikoff, who kept the positive chatter booming throughout the epically-long match, rose up once, twice, three times, tattooing the ball for winners as the Wolves surged.

The biggest roar, however, probably came when Mulholland stuffed Mount Vernon’s biggest hitter at the net, sending a would-be winner right back at her.

That staked the Wolves to a 13-5 lead, and all was well.

Until it almost wasn’t.

Finding their own inner spark, the tired but very-game Hurricanes put together a 5-0 run to get back within 13-10 and tighten the collar of everyone wearing red and black in the CHS gym.

But not to worry, as the aforementioned Prescott was flexing her biceps and taking names all evening, and she closed out things with two spikes which hit like the hammer of the gods.

The crunch-time theatrics capped a royal rumble where two pretty evenly matched squads went toe-to-toe and punched, jabbed, and parried in rapid succession.

The opening set seemed to belong to Coupeville, which led from 1-0 after a Chernikoff slicer, all the way up until 24-23, with Prescott giving the Wolves set point after blistering a spike off the back line.

But it wasn’t to be, as MVC won the final three points of the set, two of them thanks to CHS tips getting lost in the net.

If the Wolves were a bit nervous after that stumble, it didn’t show, however, as they basically repeated the first set in the second set — leading all the way — but this time clamping down at the end to close things out.

Prescott, Chernikoff, and Mulholland all came up big once again, with sophomore setter Maddie Georges alertly flicking passes from player to player, while Maddie Vondrak made her presence felt.

Playing in front of former Wolf volleyball greats such as Emma Smith and Valen Trujillo, Vondrak hit the ball so hard on one winner you could literally hear the ball scream “Mercy, Maddie!!” as all the air in the orb evaporated.

The third set started competitive, but then turned sour, as MVC went on an 11-4 tear to turn a one-point advantage into an eventual 25-17 win.

The highlights were few and far between in the set, but they were there.

Mulholland flicked a tip winner, after Prescott made a sensational running save to keep the ball alive, and sophomore Gwen Gustafson made her varsity debut.

But again, the Wolves showed a deep willingness to fight, and a refusal to give in, even when trailing.

Coupeville, after looking a bit disorganized in the third set, immediately jelled again in the fourth, with veteran leaders like Jaimee Masters and Chernikoff settling their team down.

Georges ripped off five straight points on her serve to get things flowing in the right direction, while Tenore and Vondrak were on-point as well when they rotated behind the stripe.

The biggest clue of what was to come in the finale came by watching the Hurricanes noticeably tiring, while the Wolves seemed to be growing stronger with each swing.

Young guns Gustafson and Ryanne Knoblich brought a big burst of energy to the floor during their shifts, while the grizzled seniors — Chernikoff, Masters, Vondrak, and Prescott — showed their protegees how to stay calm and cool under fire.

Coupeville’s previous wins — over Concrete and Darrington — came in straight sets.

Which is nice, but sometimes you need a five-set bar brawl like the Wolves faced Saturday to find out what kind of team you really are deep down.

If so, test passed.
