Wolves savage Hawks

Four different players hit double digits Tuesday, as the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad romped to a blowout win in Tacoma.

Shredding host Concordia Christian Academy 81-31, the Wolves notch their first win of the young season, rising to 1-2 in non-conference action.

The game was just recently added to the schedule after a matchup with Auburn Adventist Academy was bumped to February.

That gave Coupeville little time to prepare for an opponent it’s never faced before, but it didn’t matter much.

The Wolves, coming off hard-fought losses to South Whidbey and Lakewood, hit the floor Tuesday and blitzed Concordia from the opening tip.

Junior gunner Logan Downes rattled the rims for 13 points in the first quarter, and with some offensive help from Alex Murdy, Nick Guay, and Cole White, he helped Coupeville sprint out to a 29-13 lead.

Murdy hammered the Hawks for another 10 points in the second frame as the Wolves stretched their lead out to 53-21 by the halftime break, and the rout was on.

An 18-4 surge in the third quarter put a running clock into play, but even with the seconds flying off the board, the Wolves still outscored their hosts 10-6 in the final frame.

It was an equal opportunity night for Coupeville, with Downes leading the way with a game-high 26, including a pair of three-balls.

He’s kicked off the new season with three straight 20+ point performances, having thrown down 25 against South Whidbey and 22 versus Lakewood.

Tuesday’s work officially moves Downes into the top 100 scorers in CHS boys’ basketball history, which dates back to 1917.

Jumping from 271 to 297 career points, he passes 12 former Wolves, including program legends such as Risen Johnson, Keith Jameson, Boom Phomvongkoth, and Aaron Curtin.

Already the highest-scoring of Ralph and Angie’s three sons, Logan Downes sits just a three-ball shy of becoming the 96th Wolf male to crack the 300-point club.

Murdy dropped in a season-high 16 as Wolf coach Brad Sherman claimed his 40th win at the school, with Nick Guay adding a varsity career-best 15, and Cole White banking in 11.

Ryan Blouin (6), Jermiah Copeland (2), Jonathan Valenzuela (2), Chase Anderson (2), and Zane Oldenstadt (1) rounded out the scoring, with William Davidson and Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim also seeing floor time.

Coupeville returns to action this Saturday, Dec. 10, when it hosts Sultan in a non-conference rumble.

Pitch-perfect awards night for booters

The net is closed for business.

The Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad capped its season Monday, with head coach Robert Wood handing out awards and letters to his booters.

Senior Aidan Wilson topped the honorees, earning both the Golden Boot as the team’s leading scorer and the Ballon d’Or for being the top player.

Grant Steller and Wilson were acknowledged for their work as team captains, and the duo was joined by fellow senior Cameron Epp in receiving four-year awards.

Rounding out the awards, Mason Butler was tabbed as Most Improved, while Wood doled out MVP honors to one player from each class.

That foursome was comprised of Cameron Epp (Senior), Nick Guay (Junior), Cael Wilson (Sophomore), and Andrew Milnes (Freshman).

You’re killin’ me, Smalls!

Some days the soccer gods are especially cruel.

For the Coupeville High School boys pitch squad, Tuesday was one of those days.

Playing with a short roster, the Wolves scrapped and fought with host La Conner, taking a scoreless game into overtime, only to be punched in the heart by a ref’s interpretation of the rule book.

Was it the right call? Possibly.

But it still hurts, and still helped send the Wolves to a 1-0 loss in a league contest.

With the narrow defeat, Coupeville slips to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, with its next two games at home.

Those contests, set for Sept. 23 and 27, come against two of the most-dangerous teams in the region, however, with Friday Harbor and Orcas Island up next on the schedule.

The latter of those teams is the defending 2B/1B state champ, while the former claimed 4th place at last year’s big dance.

Tuesday’s torrid tilt at La Conner’s Jack Whittaker Field came down to a penalty kick in the first extra period.

The Braves were awarded the one-on-one shot after the ref determined Coupeville’s goaltender had “interfered” with La Conner’s shooter, inadvertently or not.

“Controversial call indeed,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“The keeper got the foul on a 50/50 ball with their attacker, where only if you are well-versed in the laws of the game will you understand the call.”

While he would have preferred to take a victory to the bus for the jaunt back to Whidbey, Wood came away pleased with the effort given by his team, which was not at full force.

“Excellent play by everyone on our 13-man roster for this game,” he said. “It’ll be really good to have our full team one of these days.”

Coupeville gets another crack at La Conner before the regular season is done, with the Braves set to visit The Rock Oct. 25 as the Wolves celebrate Senior Night.

Hoops stars singe summer nets

The off-season is off to a great start.

Coming off the program’s best season in decades, Coupeville High School boys basketball players are keeping the good times rolling.

Even without their now-departed pack of seniors, the Wolves stormed through the Skagit County Parks and Rec Summer League, finishing 7-1 to claim top honors.

CHS coach Brad Sherman had a large group of players to draw on, using a mix of varsity and JV players, plus some incoming freshmen.

Most of those same players are currently camped out at Gonzaga University, where the Wolves are participating in a summer camp.

Hot start, cold finish for JV boys

Shooting touch is a delicate thing.

In the first half Friday night, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team had the magic touch.

After the halftime break, not so much.

Unable to hold on to an early lead on the road, the Wolves eventually fell 52-39 to host Friday Harbor.

The loss drops the JV to 1-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-7 overall, with one game left on the schedule.

Coupeville’s young guns close their season on the road at La Conner Feb. 10, then a few of them will hope to get a call up to the varsity for that team’s playoff run.

Facing off with Friday Harbor, the Wolves were scrappy, fighting for loose balls and rebounds, and played defense with intensity.

But the rim just turned unforgiving as the night rolled on.

“They battled tough but came out on the wrong end of it,” said Coupeville coach Hunter Smith.

The Wolves jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play, benefiting greatly from a hot start by Nick Guay.

The sweet-shooting sophomore rattled the rims for 10 points in the first eight minutes, including splashing home a pair of three-balls over outstretched fingers.

Coupeville clung to a 24-23 lead at the half, but a Friday Harbor three-ball a millisecond before the buzzer ended play made things closer than they might have been.

That miracle shot, which was set up by a questionable foul call on the Wolves on the prior play, seemed to light a fire deep inside the host team.

Friday Harbor went on a 17-8 tear in the third, claiming a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Wolves were led by the one-two combo of Guay and Ryan Blouin, who each netted 12 points while combining to drain five three-balls.

Hurlee Bronec (4), Hunter Bronec (3), Landon Roberts (2), Zane Oldenstadt (2), William Davidson (2), and Mikey Robinett (2) also scored, with Jack Porter, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Carson Field, and Johnny Porter rounding out the roster.
