Young guns keep on scrappin’

“We’re young, we’ve got some talent, we just need to keep working and learning.”

That was the assessment by veteran coach Randy Bottorff after the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team battled visiting Forks down to the wire Saturday in a narrow loss.

The Wolves, who were without injured big man William Davidson, did get seven players into the scoring column in a 41-33 non-conference defeat.

Now 0-2 on the young season, the Wolf JV has time to work on fine-tuning things, with their next game a week away.

Forks withstood an early barrage of points by Coupeville gunner Ryan Blouin and carried a 12-9 lead into the first break.

The Wolves sliced their deficit to 21-19 at the half, and were still just down 29-25 heading into the final frame.

Nick Guay has been a steadying presence for a young Wolf team.

Blouin finished with a team-high nine points — five of those coming in the opening quarter — while Zane Oldenstadt dropped in eight in support.

Nick Guay (6), Hunter Bronec (4), Johnny Porter (2), Landon Roberts (2), and Jack Porter (2) also scored, with Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Hurlee Bronec, and Mikey Robinett chipping in with defense and hustle.

For freshmen Roberts and Johnny Porter, Saturday’s buckets accounted for their first points as high school basketball players.

Wolf pitch warriors net awards

Boys soccer is up first.

With fall sports officially ending Saturday for Coupeville High School — when three cross country runners compete at the state meet — Wolf coaches and athletes are starting to transition into awards season.

CHS coach Robert Wood and his 19 booters kicked things off Friday with a season-closing shindig.

Senior Xavier Murdy earned Ballon d’Or (best player) honors in voting by his teammates, while sophomore Nick Guay was honored with the Golden Boot for leading the Wolves in goals.

Cael Wilson, Andrew Williams, Aidan Wilson, and Murdy were tabbed as MVP’s, with Josh Guay locking down Most Improved Player honors.

In addition to pitch excellence, the Wolves were also feted for classroom work, with Scholar Athlete Awards handed out to players who recorded a 3.5 GPA or better.

There were six Wolves who nabbed that award, with Cameron Epp, Josh Guay, Nick Guay, Eddie Perera, Grant Steller, and Williams honored.

Coupeville players are also eligible for All-League consideration when Northwest 2B/1B League coaches conduct their voting later this month.

Young booters learn on the job

It’s a perfect time to learn under fire.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer team is closing the season with back-to-back road games against the top two squads in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

With the Wolves out of playoff contention, and only three players set to depart — seniors Xavier Murdy and Tony Garcia and exchange student Miguel Puente — CHS coach Robert Wood plans to give his younger booters plenty of playing time in the final moments.

Tuesday afternoon, with a rainbow taking the place of the rain which poured down earlier in the day, Coupeville went toe-to-toe with defending league champs Orcas Island.

And, while the Wolves fell 6-1, Wood was able to give his bench a chance to play the entire second half.

“Crushing defeat, but we had fun,” he said. “Orcas is #1 or #2 and they certainly were tonight.”

The loss drops Coupeville to 4-9 on the season, while the Vikings rise to 12-2, a half-game off of Providence Classical Christian (11-1), which welcomes the Wolves to Bothell for the Oct. 28 regular-season finale.

Tuesday’s lone CHS goal came courtesy of a thrilling wham-bam-bam play.

The Wolves sent a corner kick screaming for the net, where Xavier Murdy went high to collect the ball with his head and deflect it towards pay-dirt.

When the ball hit the post, denying X-Man, it popped right to freshman Cael Wilson, who punched it in for his first goal of the season, and second of his prep pitch career.

They have a magic scoring touch

Two, for every one of yours.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team is outscoring its male counterparts 12-6 through the first six games of the season.

That could be why the former team is 3-3, while the latter is 2-4.

Overall, 10 different Wolves have slapped the ball into the back of the net during fall 2021, led by Audrianna Shaw, who has tallied a school-best four goals.

Tense game, solid finish

Cameron Epp and Co. are 2-4 and headed home for three-straight games.

“The soccer gods were on our side today.”

Coupeville High School boys soccer coach Robert Wood and his team exited Marysville with a hard-fought win Friday night, thanks to some skill and some luck.

The Wolves bounced host Grace Academy 3-2, with the game decided by a penalty kick shootout after two scoreless overtimes.

That finale went down 5-3 in favor of Coupeville, and lifts it to 2-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, with both victories coming against the same opponent.

“Strong second half with a good result,” Wood said. “Ending with PK’s is probably the most unfair method known to mankind … but a win is a win, even when the other team outplayed us most of the night.”

Closing out a three-game road trip, the Wolves went to extra time for the second-straight game. Coming off of a loss to La Conner, this ending was much more preferable.

Alex Murdy got CHS on the board with his first high school goal, coming on an “aggressive takeaway and good couple moves to get a power knuckleball shot over the keeper, under the bar.”

Coupeville’s second score came courtesy Nick Guay, who tallied his team-leading third goal of the campaign.

“An aggressive attack on a free ball … cheeky little chip over the keeper rushing the ball and into the goal,” is how his coach fondly remembered it.

Grace forced overtime by scoring in stoppage time, then the two teams failed to score in either of the two five-minute extra periods.

While the Wolves played stellar ball at times, they also benefited from Grace hitting the goal post four times.

Coupeville now returns home for three straight games, starting with a rematch with La Conner next Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The Wolves then host Mount Vernon Christian Oct. 7 and Providence Classical Christian Oct. 9.
