Wolves dig deep for gutsy win

Win when it matters most.

Showcasing nerves of steel, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team held on Tuesday to claim a major win on Friday Harbor.

Turning back a frantic late-game rally by their hosts, the Wolves headed back to the ferry with a 47-43 win and their first victory of 2025.

Now 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-8 overall, Coupeville snaps a five-game losing skid and pulls within a half game of the top spot in conference play.

La Conner, who CHS hosts Friday, and Mount Vernon Christian, are currently atop the seven-team league with 2-0 records.

Chase Anderson, Brad Sherman, and Co. return home Friday for another key league clash.

Tuesday’s tilt was a huge step forward for Coupeville, which has played seven of 11 games on the road while enduring a tough non-conference slate.

The Wolves claimed the lead early Tuesday, then continued to pull away, frame by frame, until the fourth quarter.

A 14-8 lead after one became a 25-18 advantage at the half, then a 40-27 margin through three quarters.

While the Wolverines mounted a fierce comeback in the waning moments, with Pierce Kleine pouring in 10 of his game-high 20 in the final frame, Coupeville held tough.

Chase Anderson and Hunter Bronec netted key free throws to ice the win, and Brad Sherman’s squad escaped a gym which has been one of the toughest for them to play in during their time in the Northwest League.

The Wolves split the offensive load, with senior big man Hurlee Bronec going off for a varsity career-best 16 points, while Anderson knocked down 15.

Jack Porter (8), Hunter Bronec (4), Malachi Somes (2), and Camden Glover (2) also scored, while Johnny Porter, Landon Roberts, and Davin Houston saw floor time in the win.

Hoops teams set for second-half run

The second stage begins.

Things heat up starting next week, as most of the remaining games on the high school basketball schedule are conference rumbles.

Barring an unlikely reschedule of the non-league tilts with Morton-White Pass which were cancelled by a day-long power outage on Whidbey, the Coupeville girls have eight games left, and all are against Northwest 2B/1B League teams.

Meanwhile, the Wolf boys are set to play eight of nine against conference rivals, with one trip to Napavine nestled amid that run.

First up for both CHS teams is a trip to Friday Harbor this coming Tuesday, followed by home games Friday with La Conner.

As the Wolves prep for the stretch drive, a look at where things sit through Jan. 5:

Hoops hotshots ease through holidays

More days off than on right now.

With the holidays unfolding, most Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams are taking chunks of time off between games.

After playing two tilts in Eastern Washington this weekend, Coupeville is in rest mode until a road trip to Wahkiakum next Saturday, Jan. 4.

That trip is 200+ miles one way, however, so there’s that to look forward to for the Wolves.

As we mentally prep for the calendar to flip to a new year — a time when conference action will become the focus — here’s where things currently stand:

Eastern trip looms for hoops stars

Go East, young man (and woman).

Next week brings Christmas, and then a trip to Central Washington University for Coupeville High School basketball players.

The Wolves are slated to play back-to-back games Friday and Saturday against non-conference foes, bringing the 2024 portion of the season to a close.

The CHS boys clash with Toledo and Kittitas, while the girls flip it around, and open with Kittitas before squaring up with Toledo.

As the Wolves head towards the end of 2024, and the dawn of 2025, a look at where things stand through Dec. 22:

“We just need to put the ball in the hole”

“We had some good moments, and we had some tough moments.”

As she surveyed the aftermath of Tuesday’s tilt at Mount Vernon Christian, Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball coach Megan Richter was philosophical.

The Wolves fell 52-21 to the Hurricanes, who have been the premier female hoops squad in the Northwest 2B/1B League since CHS returned to the conference.

But while the loss stings and drops Coupeville to 1-1 in league action, 3-3 overall, there were things the visitors can build upon as they head home to host Sultan Friday night.

“MVC is a good team who know how to compete,” Richter said. “We learned a lot from today and will continue to grow.

“We know what we have to do for the next time we see them and hopefully it’s a different outcome.”

Mount Vernon, which put three players into double-digit scoring, jumped out to a 23-8 lead through one quarter of play, before stretching the halftime deficit to 35-10.

The Wolves sank just one field goal across a 16-minute span covering the second and third quarters, and that’s something Richter would like to see change.

“We played great defense like we always do!” she said. “Now we just need to put the ball in the hole.”

Mia Farris and Lyla Stuurmans paced the Wolves with five points apiece, while Haylee Armstrong netted all four of her points in the final frame.

Jada Heaton (3), Tenley Stuurmans (2), Teagan Calkins (1), and Katie Marti (1) also scored, with Madison McMillan and Danica Strong rounding out the Wolf rotation.
