MVC snaps Wolf win streak

You know when it’s below freezing outside, and you leave the faucet to where it will drip all night long?

Watching Mount Vernon Christian slowly, surely pull away to beat the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team Tuesday night was kind of like that.

The visitors didn’t do anything all that spectacular — their best dunk attempt would have generated a stifled yawn on a court in Seattle — but they were consistent in every facet of the game.

Drip, drip, drip, and, in the end, that equaled a 61-47 win over the Wolves.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play with two games left and leaves it sitting behind MVC (7-0) and La Conner (7-1), which hosts the Wolves this Friday.

Now 6-11 overall after having a three-game winning streak snapped, Brad Sherman’s squad played its best ball Tuesday in the opening quarter.

With Hurlee Bronec and Camden Glover banging away down low and holding their own with a lanky group of Hurricane post players, the Wolves trailed 21-18 at the first break.

Along the way they claimed the lead four different times, with Landon Roberts drilling the bottom out of the bucket on a three-ball to earn the biggest roar from the crowd.

Hurlee Bronec almost matched the ovation, however, when he snagged a pass from Chase Anderson and whirled through a pack of Hurricanes to slap home a layup a half of a tick before the first quarter buzzer sang its song.

But while the Wolves held the lead at various points in the first frame, they couldn’t get even after that.

MVC stretched the margin out to 13 midways through the second, before CHS closed on a 5-1 min-tear.

Malachi Somes kicked off the surge by taking a charge on defense, with Glover punctuating things by snagging a rebound and converting it into a second-chance bucket.

Down 35-26 at the half, Coupeville got as close as six points in the third quarter and did it twice.

Hurlee Bronec drained a three-ball from the top the first time, while Anderson made a phenomenal save on a runaway ball, before flipping it over his head to Roberts for a breakaway bucket the second time.

Showcasing ice water in their veins to match the less-than-toasty temps outside the gym, the Hurricanes closed the quarter on a 9-2 tear, however, and the Wolves never got the deficit back to single-digits.

Hurlee Bronec, continuing his recent rise as a go-to scorer, rattled the rims for a team-high 14 points, and gained entrance to the 200-point club.

The Wolf senior has 213 career varsity points and counting as his final season begins to wind down.

Roberts (9), Glover (8), Anderson (8), Jack Porter (6), and Hunter Bronec (2) also tallied points, with Johnny Porter and Somes contributing on defense.

Wolves get scrappy, ‘Canes get dramatic

The action came in waves Tuesday night.

Ultimately that made for a tricky ride, however, as the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team soared like seasoned surfers at times, only to be swept under by a brutal undertow at other moments.

From the giddiness of hitting five of their first six shots, to the despair of being on the wrong end of a 21-0 run later, the Wolves experienced all the colors of the rainbow.

By the time the clock ticked to 0:00, CHS was on the losing end of a 61-39 clash with visiting Mount Vernon Christian, dropping the home heroes to 4-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-9 overall.

MVC is a pristine 7-0 in conference action and is built to make a run at a state title, so the loss was not unexpected.

How we got there was, however, just that – a bit unexpected.

The Wolves hit the floor radiating intensity and started dropping daggers and getting their fans hyped up.

Teagan Calkins swished a three-ball from the right side of the floor moments into play, then came back around to bang home a bucket off a lob from Danica Stong.

Add two points for Strong herself — set up by a sweet dish off the fingertips of Lyla Stuurmans, and Coupeville was sitting pretty up 7-0.

Mount Vernon never panicked, though, hitting the first three of its ten three-balls, and slowly fought back to a 14-14 tie by the end of the quarter.

Calkins remained at her furious best, channeling her “Red Dragon” persona as she banged away for 10 points in the opening frame.

Most of her buckets were set up by precision passes from her teammates, with Mia Farris and Katie Marti picking up assists as well, and the Wolves offense was clicking.

Until it wasn’t.

MVC closed the first quarter with back-to-back treys, then peppered the net for the first 15 points in the second.

Lyla Stuurmans finally broke the drought, nailing a jumper off a pass from Haylee Armstrong, but the Hurricanes slapped home two more baskets to carry a 33-16 lead into the halftime break.

And yet, there was real hope.

Coupeville cut the lead down to 10 early in the third, saw the deficit swell back up to 17, then stormed back within eight at 40-32.

Calkins continued to singe the net from all angles, while Tenley Stuurmans tickled the twine on several free throw attempts to keep things interesting.

The ‘Canes offense was too much to totally shut down, though, as the visitors knocked down three-balls #8-10 in the final quarter to make the game seem like more of a runaway than it really was.

Right before the final buzzer Calkins slipped a free throw through the net for her 19th, and final, point of the night.

That gives the Wolf junior an even 200 for her varsity career, as she becomes the 65th CHS girl to crack the club between 1974-2025.

Strong popped for seven points in support, with Tenley Stuurmans (5), Farris (4), and Lyla Stuurmans (4) also scoring.

With those four points, Lyla Stuurmans moves to 238 for her career, slipping past Wolf legend Breeanna Messner (235) to become the #50 all-time scorer in program history.

Armstrong, Marti, Madison McMillan, and Jada Heaton rounded out the rotation for Coupeville, which returns to action this Friday, Jan. 31, when it travels to La Conner.

Hoops teams prep for huge week

Now things get serious.

Next week is a huge one for Coupeville High School basketball teams, as they clash with the only schools ahead of them in the standings.

The Wolves welcome league leader Mount Vernon Christian to Whidbey Tuesday, Jan. 28, before traveling to La Conner three days later.

With only one conference clash left on the schedule after that, next week’s twin bill will have a ton to say on where both Coupeville teams end up in the race for playoff seeding.

As we gaze towards the future, a quick look at where things sit today:

Viking girls deny CHS key road win

“The stars were not aligned for us today.”

A long trip to Orcas Island Friday ended in a bit of frustration for the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball squad and coach Megan Richter.

“We just couldn’t put together a run for long enough and when we did, they always came back and answered,” she said.

“Just wasn’t it for us today.”

By the time the clock ticked to 0:00, Coupeville was looking at a 45-36 loss to a team it beat 41-38 the first time around.

The defeat drops the Wolves to 4-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-8 overall heading into a home clash Tuesday with league leader Mount Vernon Christian.

With her Wolves sitting in third place in the seven-team conference, Richter is keeping a positive mindset.

“All we can do is smooth out the bumps and move on to our next game with a better and more focused mindset,” she said.

If you take away the first quarter Friday, Coupeville would have won the game by a single point.

But those first eight minutes, when the Wolves fell behind 16-6 to the Vikings, came back to haunt the visitors.

The two teams battled to an 8-8 tie in the second frame, before Orcas narrowly “won” the third quarter 10-9.

The Wolves closed with their own triumph, holding a 13-11 advantage in the fourth as Danica Strong went off for eight of her team-high 11 points.

Strong and Teagan Calkins, who also tallied 11 points, both drilled the bottom out of the net on a trio of three-balls, with CHS holding a 6-5 advantage on shots from the parking lot.

Katie Marti drains one of her 300 career varsity points.

Mia Farris banked in six points in the second half to back the duo, with Madison McMillan (4), Katie Marti (3), and Lyla Stuurmans (1) rounding out the offensive attack.

Jada Heaton and Tenley Stuurmans also saw floor time for the Wolves.

It was a historic night for Marti, as the senior guard reached an even 300 points for her varsity career.

She is the 37th Wolf girl to crack that club for a program which started play in 1974.

Wolf boys continue late season surge

Now it’s a true winning streak.

Holding off a feisty, free throw-friendly Orcas Island squad Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad claimed its third straight victory.

Led by an explosive game from senior big man Hurlee Bronec, the Wolves escaped with a 52-47 triumph on the road and a season sweep of the always-tough Vikings.

Now 5-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-10 overall, Brad Sherman’s squad heads into a huge week, with clashes against conference leaders Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner up next on the schedule.

The Wolves, who won despite suffering a huge disparity at the foul line — Orcas hit 21 of 26 free throws to Coupeville’s 5-10 performance — led from start to finish Friday night.

Hurlee Bronec, who has been playing like a beast in the paint in 2025, poured in 11 points in the first quarter to spark CHS to an 18-15 lead.

From there, Coupeville used a 12-2 surge in the second — this time powered by the other Battlin’ Bronec Brother, one Hunter — to push the lead out to 30-17 at the half.

While Orcas cut the deficit down to 43-35 through three quarters, the Vikings were never able to catch the Wolves.

Hurlee Bronec and Chase Anderson combined for all 13 of Coupeville’s points in the third frame, while Malachi Somes netted a huge three-ball in the fourth to keep Orcas at bay.

The Wolves got big contributions from all eight players to hit the hardwood, with Hurlee Bronec leading the way with a game-high 21 points.

That pushes him to 199 points for his CHS varsity career, leaving him one point shy of becoming the 141st Wolf boy to crack the 200-point club for a program which launched in 1917.

Anderson banked in nine, with Hunter Bronec (8), Landon Roberts (4), Camden Glover (4), Somes (3), and Jack Porter (3) also scoring.

Johnny Porter rounded out the rotation, bringing intensity to a fired-up Wolf defense.

While Hurlee Bronec is on the cusp of joining the 200-point club, Anderson, currently in his junior season, continues to work his way up the career scoring chart.

He stepped on to the floor Friday as the #50 scorer in CHS boys’ history and departed it at #46, having passed Cody Peters (518), JJ Marti (520), and Gary Faris (524), while tying Brad Miller (526).
