This is the last one.

With the postseason fully upon us, today marks the final standings story for the 2023-2024 school athletic year.

Here’s to a year of arguing with the Northwest 2B/1B League’s web site when I disagreed with something it had recorded wrongly.

Games against Granite Falls, Sultan, or Blaine are NOT league games, and jamborees don’t count in the win/loss records, and you can’t count the same game twice and…

Just let it go, David, and move on. You can go back to arguing with an inanimate object in September.

The number of contests goes down, while the importance of those contests goes up.

As we head into the first full week of May, all four Coupeville High School spring sports teams are in action, with the final regular season rumbles mixing with postseason play.

Wolf softball hosts South Whidbey Friday, while the CHS netters travel to Granite Falls Monday and Friday Harbor on Friday, and that’s a wrap for non-playoff games.

Meanwhile, both track and baseball attend district-level events Saturday, with the former at home and the latter on the road at Lakewood.

Qualifying for state will be the primary focus for the Wolves, with softball and tennis making their own bids for further glory the following week.

Cole White and friends are a win away from returning to the state tourney. (Morgan White photo)

It’s been an unusual season, but the second half has been all highlight reel, all the time.

After holding off host La Conner 8-4 Thursday, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad ends the regular season having won seven of its last eight games.

The Wolves were missing their top player for much of the season thanks to an injury, then lost their cleanup hitter when he moved away midseason.

And yet, CHS finishes the regular season at 9-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 10-8 overall.

Now, the Wolves are off until Saturday, May 11, when they travel to Lakewood High School for the District 1/2 tourney.

Coupeville is the #1 seed and will play a winner-to-state, loser-out game against the survivor of a game from earlier in the day.

You can see the bracket here:

https://www.wpanetwork.com/wiaa/brackets/tournament.php?act=view&tournament_id=4409

Coupeville, which rose from the bottom of the NWL to the top during the second half of the season, closed regular season play in style.

Building an 8-0 lead as the bottom of the order rapped out base knock after base knock, the Wolves gave pitcher Seth Woollet plenty of room to operate, and he responded.

The senior hurler whiffed five over seven innings of work, and was especially effective in the middle stages, retiring the Braves 1-2-3 in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

CHS got on the scoreboard early, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first, thanks to three walks, a La Conner wild pitch, and a big RBI single from sophomore slugger Camden Glover.

The Wolves doubled their lead in the fourth, as Coop Cooper whacked a double to left, then scooted home on a wild pitch.

Two batters later, Chase Anderson, whose late-season return from injury has given the lineup an extra spark, launched a sac fly to plate Landon Roberts and it was 4-0.

Run-scoring hits off the bats of Glover and Woollet helped shove the lead all the way out to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, and while La Conner rallied a bit, time ran out on the Braves.

Coupeville threw out a runner trying to steal, pulled off a key double play in the sixth, then ended the game with Woollet inducing a final fly ball which settled softly into the glove of Aiden O’Neill as he patrolled the outfield.

Now the Wolves have some time to marinate in their late-season success before they attempt to punch their ticket to state for the second straight season under coach Steve Hilborn.

The last time a CHS baseball team went to the big dance in back-to-back seasons was 1990-1991.

Thursday stats:

Chase Anderson — One walk
Peyton Caveness — One walk
Coop Cooper — One double, one single
Camden Glover — One double, one single, one walk
Jack Porter — Two walks
Johnny Porter — Two singles

Marcelo Gebhard set a PR in the javelin Wednesday, helping the CHS boys win a league title. (Thomas Studer photo)

“It was a perfect, beautiful day for some PRs!”

Listening to the words of coach Elizabeth Bitting, the Coupeville High School track and field squad set 68 personal bests Wednesday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships in Mount Vernon.

Toss in 10 wins and a team title for the Wolf boys, and it was a great day all around for those reppin’ the red and black.

The CHS boys held off La Conner 148.5-126 to claim top team honors, while Mount Vernon Christian (104.5), Orcas Island (73), and Friday Harbor (65) rounded out the field.

On the girls’ side, MVC claimed first with 174.5 points, with La Conner edging Coupeville 132-131. Friday Harbor tallied 51.5, with Orcas sitting at 46.

The Wolves were led by junior Carson Field, who won the 800 and 1600, while also sweeping both boys relay races and both pole vault titles (Carly Burt and Cael Wilson).

Lyla Stuurmans (800), Zane Oldenstadt (Shot Put), Aleera Kent (1600), and Zac Tackett (Discus) also won as CHS kicked off its postseason run.

Next up is the district meet Saturday, May 11 in Coupeville. Finish in the top two there and you qualify for state, which is May 23-25 in Yakima.

Jada Heaton brings her A-game both on sunny days and cold, windy ones like Mother Nature offered up Saturday. (Claire Kalwies-Anderson photo)

The title is once more theirs.

A Coupeville High School varsity softball squad which starts three 8th graders and two freshmen clinched the Northwest 2B/1B League title Saturday, decimating visiting Darrington 14-1 on a blustery, frigid prairie.

The win lifts the Wolves to 8-0 in conference play, 11-4 overall.

And while there’s plenty more regular season action ahead on the schedule — games against La Conner, Nooksack Valley, South Whidbey, and (maybe) Concrete — Kevin McGranahan’s team got to bask in the moment of reclaiming its title.

At least for a moment. And then it’s on to achieving other goals.

After falling just short against Friday Harbor last season and missing out on the NWL’s lone 2B playoff slot, Coupeville is ahead of schedule this time around.

With no seniors, the Wolves start 8th graders Ava Lucero, Adeline Maynes, and Sydney Van Dyke, plus fab frosh cousins Haylee Armstrong and Capri Anter.

That fivesome, and veterans Teagan Calkins, Jada Heaton, Mia Farris, Madison McMillan, and Taylor Brotemarkle, have meshed well this season.

That fiery mix of youthful vigor and grizzled experience was on display Saturday, as everyone in the lineup contributed, while the Wolf backups were their usual rowdy selves, keeping warm by enthusiastically cheering nonstop.

They had plenty to roar for, as pitching ace Maynes fired BB’s, whiffing seven Loggers and largely staying out of trouble.

She got some defensive help, with Armstrong making a superb dig on a low throw at first, while Brotemarkle and McMillan showed off the guns from short and third, respectively.

Farris closed the game, and officially clinched the title, by tracking down a high, twisting shot to center, perfectly reading the wind and not allowing the ball to get past her.

Offensively, the Wolves attacked from the first pitch and never relented.

Armstrong cracked a leadoff single, then scooted around the basepaths, stealing second base and freaking Darrington out so badly it committed two errors while trying, and failing, to catch her.

Farris followed with a walk, then the CHS bash sisters erupted.

“Sit back and witness my feats of strength!” (Photo by Claire Kalwies-Anderson)

Brotemarkle mashed a triple to center, the ball steadily rising as it soared over the head of the fielder, then two batters later “The Red Dragon” let Darrington feel her full fury.

That would be Calkins, the sophomore catcher following in mom Jackie’s diamond footsteps, and she belted a two-run home run to left, the ball screaming in agony as it headed up towards Prairie Center.

Up 5-0 after one inning, the Wolves pushed four more across in the second, and another five in the third to really stretch the lead out.

McMillan and Calkins had back-to-back run-scoring base knocks, while Brotemarkle and Van Dyke later added their own RBI singles to the assault.

Putting a cap on things, Heaton dropped an absolutely gorgeous sacrifice bunt to plate a runner, then skipped all the way back to the dugout.

Saturday stats:

Capri Anter — One walk
Haylee Armstrong — One single, one walk
Taylor Brotemarkle — One single, one triple, one walk
Teagan Calkins — One single, one home run, one walk
Mia Farris — Two walks
Madison McMillan — One single, one walk
Sydney Van Dyke — One single, one walk
