They slowed their roll.

Playing inspired defense Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team stood toe-to-toe with the biggest baddie in the region, and rarely blinked.

Holding visiting Mount Vernon Christian to just a single goal for the first 50 minutes of the game, the Wolves made a huge statement as their season winds down.

While Coupeville eventually fell 4-0, with the Hurricanes lobbing in a pair of goals in the waning moments, it’s a huge improvement from the first two times the Wolves faced MVC.

They gave up 21 goals across those two earlier losses, but Wednesday held the Hurricanes to their third-fewest goals of the season.

Only 4A Mount Vernon and ritzy private school Cedar Park Christian have held MVC to a lower final tally as the Hurricanes have gone 10-1-1 overall, 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville sits at 2-5 in league play, 4-6 overall with a road game Oct. 26 at Friday Harbor left on the schedule.

There is also a contest against La Conner which was postponed, though the chances it will be rescheduled fade as the end of the regular season hurtles towards us.

Amaya Schaffeld and Co. close their season next week.

Wednesday’s game was originally supposed to be a road trip, but a lack of bus drivers changed it into a home affair, offering Coupeville fans one more chance to see their team in person.

The Wolves responded, pestering the Hurricanes, forcing them out of their carefully-calibrated routine, and, at least once, inadvertently drilling an MVC player in the face at point-blank range.

The Hurricanes popped in a goal in the game’s fifth minute off of a sweet example of note-perfect team play, as the lead girl drew the Wolf netminder towards her, then banked a flawless pass to a trailing teammate, who smacked the ball home.

But then Coupeville clamped down, holding MVC — a team which has outscored foes 86-4 this season — scoreless over the next 45 minutes of play.

The Hurricanes didn’t break their dry spell until the game’s 51st minute, when they buried a dagger into the right corner of the net.

Two more goals came late, with the final one — a long, booming shot which went up, up, and away, then suddenly dropped into the net over Wolf goalie Maylin Steele’s shoulder — was scored in stoppage time at the very end.

Coupeville mounted a handful of its own charges at the MVC net, but were thwarted by a stellar Hurricane defense and an alert goalie.

That left most of the Wolf highlights to come from defenders such as Mary Milnes, who lowered her shoulder and made her fervent fan section proud by rocking a would-be goal scorer with a crunch which the rival felt all the way to the back of her teeth.

They won the battle, but lost the war.

The best volleyball match of the season went down Tuesday in the Coupeville High School gym, a JV battle royal which came within a whisker of giving La Conner’s second unit its first league loss in 20+ seasons.

The fans were engaged, the players were rowdy and rambunctious, and every point mattered in a thriller in which, in one way, the Wolves came out on top.

Coupeville actually won more games than visiting La Conner — 62-59 — but ultimately fell 26-24, 18-25, 15-13 in three titanic sets.

The loss drops CHS to 8-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-3 overall, but serves as a warning to the Braves.

The young Wolf crew fears no one, and no team, no matter how vaunted their reputation may be.

Led by CHS player-turned-coach Ashley Menges, the Wolf JV is winning, it is fighting for every single point, and it is preparing its players for the eventual jump to varsity.

And, once they get there, these spikers will enter each gym, their own or ones on the road, expecting to be competitive every single night, regardless of the name on the other jerseys.

Tuesday’s tilt was proof of that, as the Wolves proved they could roar from behind, run in front, or stand in the middle of the floor and swap haymakers.

After falling behind 7-4 in the opening set, Coupeville fought back to force four ties, the final one at 22-22.

The play of the match came when hard-charging freshman Katie Marti made a miracle save while on the floor.

Staring at the other player’s shoes, she still managed to get several fingers on the volleyball, converting it from a runaway to a suddenly perfectly-placed winner, all with the flick of her wrist while still prone.

That helped spark a nice run at the service stripe from teammate Gwen Gustafson, while Marti came back around to deliver the ace which staked Coupeville to a 23-22 lead, its first advantage since 1-0.

Katie Marti was a whirlwind Tuesday, pulling off big play after big play, as usual.

La Conner’s JV, which doesn’t hit as hard as its varsity counterparts, but does take after them in terms of committing few errors, found a way to wriggle out of the first frame, but set two belonged to the Wolves.

Madison McMillan broke things open with a run of six straight points on her serve, aided by two big winners off of the deadly fingertips of Grey Peabody, and CHS never trailed in the middle set.

Each time a play went Coupeville’s way, the girls on the floor, and the girls on the bench, roared loud enough to be heard up in Oak Harbor, and the fans in attendance backed them.

Issabel Johnson’s mom, in particular, was a standout, raising the roof for both her daughter and every one of her daughter’s teammates, from Jada Heaton to Mia Farris and beyond.

It was Aby Wood who punctuated things, crunching a spike which went right to left and caught the very last flake of paint on the line for a crucial point.

La Conner got back to within 19-17, but the Wolves closed things out like cold-blooded killers, with Marti smacking a nasty ace, and Gustafson unleashing her full fury on a shot which sliced ‘n diced anyone foolhardy enough to get in its way.

With the match riding on the line, the final set — a mad dash to 15 points — featured eight different ties, while neither team led by more than two points at any time.

Coupeville’s final advantage was at 12-11, coming after Farris and McMillan pasted back-to-back winners, but La Conner found a way to wiggle away one final time.

The Wolves held off one match point, even with two players colliding while both were going for the third, and final, hit on a rally.

To the surprise of all involved, the ball not only still went over the net, but skipped away from the defense once it did, pulling CHS within 14-13.

While they couldn’t pull out what would have been a landmark win, the JV did make a huge statement to their rivals, their fans, and, ultimately themselves.

These Wolves are hungry, and they’re planning to chomp everyone in their way.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 2 digs, 7 assists, 4 aces
Mia Farris — 2 kills, 1 assist, 1 solo block
Gwen Gustafson — 5 kills, 10 digs, 2 aces
Isabel Johnson — 5 digs, 1 ace
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 3 digs, 7 assists, 2 aces

Cael Wilson and Coupeville came dangerously-close to toppling Friday Harbor Tuesday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Almost a major upset.

Playing some of their best ball of the season Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad pushed visiting Friday Harbor to the very edge.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines escaped with a 1-0 victory, keeping them in the hunt for the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

With the win, Friday Harbor gets to 8-3, a game back of Orcas Island (9-2), and a game-and-a-half behind league leader Providence Classical Christian (9-1).

The top four teams in the NWL advance to the postseason.

Despite playing valiantly, Coupeville falls to 3-8.

“It was a really, really good game,” said Wolf coach Robert Wood. “So much better (1000 times better) than our first game against them.

“Played around a bit with lineup and positioning and it worked great,” he added. “Stopped every attack of theirs — except one great shot from 20+ yards.

“Bummed out man… Should have had that one.”

Coupeville was supposed to return to the pitch Thursday, but a road trip to Lynnwood to play Cedar Park Christian has been cancelled as that school deals with Covid issues.

The game won’t be rescheduled.

The Wolves still host Lopez Island Saturday, in what will be Senior Night for Coupeville’s Xavier Murdy, Tony Garcia, and Miguel Puente.

CHS then closes the season with back-to-back road games against Orcas Island and Providence Classical Christian.

The Great Bus Driver Shortage of 2021 is benefiting Coupeville fans this time around.

Wednesday’s girls soccer match between the Wolves and Mount Vernon Christian was supposed to be played off-Island, but now it’s coming to Whidbey.

That means all the Coupeville booters who just celebrated Senior Night will get an unexpected extra game at Mickey Clark Field.

Game time Wednesday is 4:00 PM.

Sophie Martin is a force of nature.

Time to get tense.

As fall sports unspool and we head deeper into October, the chase for playoff berths becomes more frantic.

Every game counts, but late-season games often matter even more.

What we know at this point — Coupeville High School girls and boys soccer are not playoff-bound, while volleyball absolutely is, and football will likely join the spikers in the postseason.

Meanwhile, cross country is its own thing, with its own unique path to follow, and boys tennis has been benched since the season was called-off before it began.

The week ahead is perhaps the busiest single stretch of days for Wolf teams, at least in terms of home games — and especially if you include middle school volleyball in that equation.

CHS cross country hosts the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Thursday, Oct. 21, with Fort Casey State Park the hub for all activity,

Meanwhile, girls soccer hits the road Oct. 20 to play front-runner Mount Vernon Christian, and football hosts Cascade (Leavenworth) Oct. 22 for Homecoming.

Boys soccer and volleyball are the most active Wolf programs, combining for six games and a tournament in a six-day span.

The CHS booters host Friday Harbor Oct. 19, travel to Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Oct. 21, and host Lopez Island Oct. 23, with the last of those games being Coupeville’s Senior Night.

Meanwhile, Wolf volleyball travels to South Whidbey Oct. 18, hosts La Conner Oct. 19 and Friday Harbor Oct. 21, then closes the week Oct. 23 at the Island Invitational in Langley.
