They like getting on base.

Rapping out nine hits Tuesday, then tacking on 12 walks, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad cruised to a big win on Orcas Island.

By the time the Wolves were done tapping home plate, they had a 16-4 win — in a game mercy-ruled after six innings — and headed home with their fourth victory in their last five games.

Now 4-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-4 overall, Coupeville sits a half-game out of first place in the NWL, trailing just defending champs Friday Harbor (4-0).

The Wolves get a few days off to enjoy spring break, returning to action Apr. 11 with a road trip to Sultan for a non-conference tilt.

Everyone chipped in Tuesday, with 10 different Wolves reaching base, and seven of those players slapping a hit.

Coupeville got out to a quick start, pushing three runs across in the top of the first thanks to singles from Hawthorne Wolfe and Scott Hilborn packaged around a walk to Jonathan Valenzuela.

Orcas scraped out a run in the bottom of the first, and another in the second, cutting the deficit to 3-2, before the Wolves slammed their foot on the gas pedal.

A six-run burst in the top of the third, keyed by a Xavier Murdy double and a single off of Jack Porter’s bat, busted things open.

From there, CHS cruised in for the win, tacking on three more runs in the fourth, before closing things out with a four-run rally in the sixth.

Wolf pitchers Cody Roberts and Hilborn combined to whiff nine Vikings, scattering five hits and not giving up more than a single run in any inning.

The hits (and the wins) keep raining down.

Pounding out 17 base-knocks Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad squashed host Orcas Island 15-0.

The game, which was mercy-ruled after five innings, sends the Wolves into the remainder of spring break carrying a five-game winning streak.

Now 4-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-1 overall, Coupeville is off until Apr. 11, when it travels to Sultan for a non-conference clash with the 1A Turks.

Tuesday’s tilt was one-sided all the way, with Coupeville softball running its NWL mark to 16-0 since returning to the league before the 2020-2021 school year.

“Another long trip to the islands, but very successful,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan.

Izzy (Wells) was dominant in the circle and we hit well again.”

Coupeville’s senior hurler did all of the work on the defensive side of the ball, whiffing 14 Orcas hitters, only letting one Viking slip away for a very brief moment.

That Orcas batter grounded out on a comebacker to the circle, with Izzy Wells flipping the ball to Melanie Navarro at first.

Izzy Wells gets nasty.

At the plate Coupeville gave its hosts a flicker of a hope, not scoring until the top of the second.

Izzy Wells reached on an error, before Allie Lucero, Maya Lucero, and Sofia Peters whacked back-to-back-to-back singles to plate a pair of runners.

The Wolves blew things open with five runs in the third, thanks to seven straight hits.

The big blows came from Taylor Brotemarkle, Savina Wells, and Izzy Wells, who crunched doubles one after another.

Three more tallies in the fourth, and a final five-spot in the top of the fifth inning set the final margin in a game where Coupeville could have been much more savage if it wanted.

The Wolves have won their four league games this season by a combined score of 83-0, balancing the need to keep improving with not wanting to overly embarrass their overmatched NWL rivals.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 2 doubles
Mia Farris
— 1 walk
Lily Leedy
— 2 singles
Allie Lucero
— 2 singles
Maya Lucero

Sofia Peters
— 1 single, 1 walk
Audrianna Shaw — 1 single, 1 walk
Izzy Wells

The Wolf boys plan for greatness.

Everyone played.

After a couple of weeks dominated by games being cancelled by Covid protocols and weather, Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams got a full schedule in the books this past week.

Along the way, the Coupeville boys and La Conner girls asserted themselves as the top teams in the conference, fending off Mount Vernon Christian.

Now, the 1B league schools are flying towards the start of the postseason, while 2B schools Coupeville, Friday Harbor, and La Conner take a more leisurely route.

CHS still has two weeks left in the regular season before it hosts the district tourney, an event which could very likely feature both Wolf squads.

The coming week kicks off with the Coupeville girls hosting Sedro-Woolley Tuesday, Feb. 1 in a non-conference tilt, before both Wolf programs amble off to Friday Harbor Feb. 4.

Where things stand through games of Jan. 29:

Northwest League boys basketball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 9-0 13-0

Orcas Island 4-3 6-5
La Conner 3-4 5-10
Friday Harbor 3-5 5-7

Every night a different hero.

Four games into the 2020-2021 hoops season, that’s the statement being delivered by the Coupeville High School varsity boys basketball squad.

Saturday was no different, with four Wolves scoring in double digits as CHS drilled host Orcas Island 73-42 in the first road trip of the season.

The victory, Coupeville’s second in less than 24 hours, lifts it to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-0 overall.

The Wolves are tied atop the NWL standings with Mount Vernon Christian (2-0, 3-1), a team it faces next week.

It’ll be part of a busy week leading into the holiday break.

Coupeville travels to Concrete (0-2, 0-3) Dec. 14 and MVC Dec. 17, then hosts non-conference archrival South Whidbey Dec. 18.

After that, the high-flying Wolves are off until Jan. 4.

And Brad Sherman’s wrecking crew is absolutely high-flying, having broken 70 points each time out this season, with a narrow win over 3A Oak Harbor, followed by three straight blowouts.

Coupeville’s 4-0 start is the best the program has seen since the 1996-1997 Wolves — starring current assistant coach Arik Garthwaite — began 12-0.

Saturday’s scorching of Orcas was very similar to Friday’s demolition of Darrington, as CHS exploded out of the gate, building a huge lead early.

A day after scoring 30 in the first quarter, the Wolves dropped 27 on the Vikings, with Alex Murdy knocking down nine points to lead the way.

Up 27-9 heading into the second frame, Coupeville stretched the margin to 43-18 at the half, and 60-24 through three periods.

The Wolves scored from all angles, but were particularly effective from long range, with six of 10 players nailing at least one three-ball.

Cole White and Xavier Murdy each splashed home a pair of treys, with Hawthorne Wolfe, Caleb Meyer, Grady Rickner, and Alex Murdy also makin’ the nets pop.

Meyer, the last heir to Videoville’s legacy, was top man Saturday, kissing the glass for 15 points, while Alex Murdy (14), Wolfe (13), and Xavier Murdy (10) were also super-effective.

Coupeville also got scoring from Rickner (9), White (6), Logan Martin (2), Dominic Coffman (2), and Logan Downes (2), while Jonathan Valenzuela brought the defensive heat during his time on the floor.

They’re 4-0, and hungry for more.

Top of the league.

That’s where the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team finds itself after pounding host Orcas Island 36-19 Saturday afternoon.

The team’s second Northwest 2B/1B League victory in less than 24 hours, it lifts the Wolves to 2-0 in conference play, 3-1 overall.

It also puts Coupeville in a tie with defending NWL champs La Conner (2-0, 5-0).

And last, but not least, it leaves first-year varsity head coach Megan Smith smiling from ear to ear.

“We played really well today,” she said. “Our defense was phenomenal!

“They worked so hard on it in practice this week, and it really showed today,” Smith added. “They are really coming together as a team, and that has been so fun to watch!”

Fresh off a home win against Darrington Friday, Coupeville came out on fire during its first road trip of the season.

Senior Audrianna Shaw, who went off for 20 points — best performance by a Wolf player, girl or boy, varsity or JV, this season — had the range early, and never relented.

Banging home the first of four three balls on the day, she poured in seven points in the game’s first eight minutes, sparking CHS to a 14-5 lead at the opening break.

From there, the Wolves steadily pulled away, pushing the margin to 23-7 at the half, and 34-15 by the end of the third quarter.

Shaw, who outscored Orcas by herself, played like her coach did back when she wore a CHS uniform — bringing the offensive heat on every play.

Audri couldn’t miss today!,” Smith said. “She had a great game all around.”

Audrianna Shaw outscored Orcas 20-19 Saturday.

Shaw had plenty of help, as six of her nine teammates also lit up the scoreboard.

Abby Mulholland and Izzy Wells knocked down four points apiece to lead the support crew, while Savina Wells notched three.

Maddie Georges (2), Gwen Gustafson (2), and Carolyn Lhamon (1) rounded out the scoring, with Lyla Stuurmans, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

Coupeville has a busy week ahead, with three road games in a five-day stretch.

The Wolves have league tilts at Concrete (0-2, 1-2) Dec. 14 and Mount Vernon Christian (1-1, 3-1) Dec. 17, as well as a non-conference rumble at South Whidbey Dec. 18.

Then they’re off until Jan. 4, when La Conner travels to Whidbey.
