Two cheers for the Coupeville Lions Club Students of the Quarter.

Both Pamela Morrell and Makenna Jonker-Chambers are key members of the CHS spirit squad, while also being top-notch students and community members.

The Lions Club honors two Wolf seniors each academic quarter, before picking its Students of the Year at graduation time.

Morrell and Jonker-Chambers, honored Jan. 13, are being tabbed for their efforts during the second academic quarter of the school year.

CHS staff and teachers vote on the awards, with students honored for “community service, effort, character, social relationships, scholarship, and sportsmanship.”

Along with her work as a cheerleader, Jonker-Chambers is on the Executive Board, a member of the National Honor Society, and a participant in the school’s Captain’s Club.

The daughter of Amy Jonker and Donald Chambers pulls down a 3.8 GPA, with her favorite classes including math, biology, and health careers.

Jonker-Chambers, who volunteers as a tutor and with a vacation bible school, plans to attend a four-year university, followed by medical school, with a focus on radiology.

The season was a success.

While a return trip to state evaded the Coupeville High School competition cheer squad this season, the Wolves left it all on the mat.

An appearance at the Last Chance Qualifier in Yelm Saturday brought an end to the run for CHS, but coach Jennifer Morrell exited with head held high.

“We did not qualify for state this year, but we learned a lot,” she said.

“They are already planning next year’s routine.”

Coupeville, a small school competing against much larger institutions, beat the other 2B team in its category both of the last two weeks.

Saturday that was Chief Leschi, while last week it was Forks.

The Wolves also had wins over bigger schools this year, including knocking off 2A Kingston in December.

A new season has begun in style.

Coupeville High School’s competition cheer squad escaped the storm-ravaged island Saturday, joining a bunch of much-bigger schools to make their first run at qualifying for the big dance.

The event was Jungle Jam at Auburn Mountainview High School, with the 2B Wolves lining up against primarily 3A and 4A rivals in their 13-team division.

“They hit their routine and had an amazing time,” said CHS coach Jennifer Morrell. “We did not qualify for state yet, but we will keep working toward that goal.”

The Wolves get back at it Jan. 11, when they’re slated to compete at Harbor Cheer Fest hosted by Gig Harbor.

Coupeville’s competition squad is:

Abbigail Bond
Alysia Burdge
Olivia Hall
Denalie Kalwies
Bella Karr
Elizabeth Lo (Manager)
Pamela Morrell
Bea Roncada
Jacob Schooley
Nick Shelly

The cheers bounce off the gym walls, and not the prairie itself.

Other than that, it’s business as normal for the Coupeville High School cheer squad, which has moved indoors for winter.

Still loud ‘n proud. Still at the forefront of Wolf athletics.
