Booters return to big time!!

It’s been awhile.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad had some playoff success in the past, including a couple of trips to the state tourney.

But most of the current Wolves were still in elementary school the last time CHS won a playoff game on the pitch.

So, having knocked off five-time state champ Bellevue Christian 3-0 Saturday, notching their first postseason win since 2012, this group of players is entering uncharted waters.

The double-elimination portion of districts kicks off Tuesday, with Coupeville traveling to Mt. Tahoma High School to face Vashon Island.

Win or lose, they’ll play again Thursday, against either Klahowya or Charles Wright Academy.

As you count down the hours, here’s a look at what you need to know.

VASHON ISLAND

Coupeville High School shocked the soccer world Saturday, upending five-time state champ Bellevue Christian and earning the Wolf booters their first playoff win since 2012.

With the game just up the road in Oak Harbor, CHS had a sizable collection of fans on hand, plus the attention of their own personal paparazzi.

The last time the Coupeville High School boys soccer team won a playoff game, Sam Wynn was in third grade.

Jump forward six years, almost to the day, and the Wolves, with a big boost from their fab frosh, have tasted postseason glory once again.

Wynn banged home the first goal, the only one which truly mattered, then William Nelson and Aram Leyva added insurance scores, and Coupeville bushwhacked Bellevue Christian 3-0 Saturday at Oak Harbor’s Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

The playoff win, the first for the Wolves since a 1-0 win over Meridian way back on May 2, 2012, lifts CHS to 7-7-2 on the season.

More importantly, it propels them into the double-elimination portion of districts, two wins away from a trip to the state tourney.

Coupeville travels to Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma Tuesday, May 8 to face Nisqually League champ Vashon Island (12-1-3). Kickoff is 6 PM.

Win or lose, they play again May 10 at Orting High School.

That game will pit the Wolves against either Charles Wright Academy (8-1-1) or their Olympic League nemesis, Klahowya (13-2-1).

Saturday, Coupeville faced two obstacles, one physical, one mental.

Bellevue Christian came in at 9-5 and carried the legacy of a program which has won five state titles.

The bigger stumbling block was Coupeville’s own postseason troubles.

Five straight playoff losses, four in which they didn’t score. The worst of them came just a year ago, a 5-0 loss to none other than BC.

None of that mattered Saturday, however, as the Wolves dictated play, frustrating the Vikings so badly their coach was tagged with a yellow card at the end.

Wynn rattled home his fifth goal to open the scoring, before Nelson punched in his eighth to stretch the lead out.

Wolf goalie Dewitt Cole played his heart out in the net, with the highlight being “an awesome save to keep the game at 2-0,” according to CHS coach Kyle Nelson.

Wolf sophomore Aram Leyva beat the Viking netminder, his 12th goal of the season and 18th of his career, to round out the scoring, while cousin Derek Leyva collected two assists with a pair of pretty passes.

The three-goal assault gives Coupeville 62 on the season, the most any Wolf boys soccer team has scored in a single season.

As he marinated in the moment, Kyle Nelson was a happy man.

“Finally made that breakthrough in the playoffs,” he said. “Great team game. Everyone did their part for the victory.

“Onward into districts!”

Playoff glory beckons!!

One game for all the marbles.

The Coupeville High School soccer squad finished second in the Olympic League this season, its best finish in the four-year history of the conference, but now the season comes down to one 80-minute stretch.

The Wolves host Bellevue Christian, the #3 seed out of the Nisqually League, Saturday afternoon at Oak Harbor’s Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

Win, and CHS is guaranteed at least two more postseason games.

Lose, and it’s time to turn in uniforms, hang up shin pads and prepare for the awards banquet.

Here’s the breakdown for Saturday:

Last meeting with BC: Lost 5-0 in 2017 district playoffs

Goal differential: 39-37

Common foes: Vashon Island (lost 6-0 and 3-1), Chimacum (beat 10-0)

Last meeting with Coupeville: Won 5-0 in 2017 district playoffs

Coach: Paul Adams

Mascot: Vikings

Booters stroll to playoffs!!

Mission, accomplished.

Taking care of business Friday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad thrashed host Chimacum 11-1, officially punching its ticket to the playoffs.

With the win, the Wolves rise to 5-3 in Olympic League play, 6-6-2 overall.

After finishing in third-place in each of the first three seasons of the four-team conference, CHS put together its most-successful run in its final campaign.

Coupeville jumps to the new six-team North Sound Conference this fall.

Before they depart, the Wolves finally got over the hump against Port Townsend, knocking off the RedHawks twice.

That was huge in a year in which only two teams made the postseason cut, instead of the usual three.

After wrapping the regular season Monday at home with Senior Night against Klahowya (7-0, 11-2-1), the Wolves will prep for their playoff opener.

That tilt arrives Saturday, May 5, and will be a “home” game held at Oak Harbor’s stadium.

As the #2 seed from the Olympic League, the Wolves will play the #3 seed from the Nisqually League, Bellevue Christian (9-4), in a loser-out game at 1 PM.

Win, and Coupeville advances to the double-elimination portion of districts, where two of four teams will advance to the state tourney.

Facing a Chimacum squad which has been outscored 125-3 this season, the Wolves did what they could to keep the game mildly-competitive, while still making sure to get the win.

Senior captain William Nelson paced the Wolves, punching in four goals, which lifts his season total to seven.

Aram Leyva added his 10th score, while the Downes brothers, senior Hunter and freshman Sage, each collected a hat trick.

That gives Coupeville 58 goals (spread among 11 shooters), which is the most a Wolf boys soccer squad has scored in a single season.
