It ended too quickly, but it was another huge step back towards the top.

The Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad, making its first postseason appearance under fourth-year coach Anthony Smith, ran into a lights-out shooting performance by host Cascade Christian Saturday and fell 57-36.

The loss capped a 7-13 season for the Wolves and knocked them out of the district playoffs.

But the defeat, and the loss of five seniors, can’t obscure the fact CHS has improved each season since Smith took the coaching reigns.

Inheriting a team largely made up of freshmen his first year, Smith and that young core (Aaron Trumbull and Joel Walstad played all four years, Aaron Curtin three) have gone from zero wins to one to three to this year’s performance.

“It was a real honor to coach all the seniors,” Smith said. “But those three have been here from the beginning, when we would have three to four guys at an open gym.

“They helped lay the foundation of what we’ve got going now and help us set some standards for the program.”

That trio, along with Matt Shank (who moved to town from Utah before his junior season) and first-year varsity player Isaac Vargas, now depart, but the cupboard is far from bare.

Leading the returning players will be current junior Wiley Hesselgrave, who capped a stellar year with a 20-point, four-rebound performance in Puyallup.

“He has let some people know we’ve got a guy down here who can play and will come after you all night long,” Smith said with an appreciative chuckle.

Hesselgrave’s magnificent performance aside, the Wolves didn’t have enough to counter Cascade Christian’s outside shooting.

The Cougars hit from long range, early, late and often, and it wasn’t just their guards, as their post players also showed pop.

Jumping out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, Cascade Christian took a 12-point lead in at the break, then broke the game open in the third.

Any chances of a Coupeville comeback died quickly as the Cougars rained down several quick treys on their way to a devastating 16-3 surge in the third.

“They hit a couple threes on us, bam, bam, and that was it,” Smith said. “Give them credit. They shot the ball extremely well.”

Walstad chipped in with six points to back Hesselgrave, while Trumbull (4), CJ Smith (2), Ryan Griggs (2) and Hunter Smith (2) rounded out the scorers.

Trumbull had four boards and two steals while Griggs snared four rebounds and rejected three shots.

Curtin added three boards, a block and a steal in his final performance as a Wolf hoops star.

With a first-round bye thanks to being league champs, the CHS girls, led by seniro Madeline Strasburg, kick off

With a first-round bye thanks to being league champs, the CHS girls, led by senior Madeline Strasburg, kick off double-elimination play Monday.

It’s up to Coupeville to save the day.

Three games into the first basketball postseason in league history and the 1A Olympic League is taking it in the shorts.

All three conference schools that played loser-out playoff games Friday night did just that, lose, falling to Nisqually League rivals.

In one fell swoop, the Klahowya boys and girls and the Chimacum girls were washed away, taking half of the league’s playoff teams out in one fell swoop.

Chimacum fell 63-26 to Bellevue Christian, which now advances to the double-elimination final four to play Coupeville Feb. 16 at Sumner High School.

On the other side of the bracket, the Klahowya girls were bounced 53-36 by Seattle Christian, which moves on to play Cascade Christian.

Two of the four remaining girls teams will advance to regionals.

On the boys side, Klahowya was shredded 72-43 by Charles Wright Academy. Vashon Island awaits CWA in the double-elimination round.

The Wolf boys get their crack tonight, when they play a loser-out game at Cascade Christian (7 PM tip), with the winner advancing to play Chimacum Feb. 17 at Sumner High School.

Postseason fever is in the air.

In less than 36 hours, the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team makes its playoff debut, with the Wolf girls set to tip off Monday.

The CHS boys (7-12) travel to Cascade Christian (down Puyallup way) for a Valentine’s Day special, tipping off Saturday night at 7 PM in a loser-out game.

Win there, and the Wolves advance to the double-elimination portion of districts, with games the coming Tuesday, Thursday and (possibly) Saturday.

The Coupeville girls (15-5), by benefit of winning the program’s first league title since 2002, are already in the double-elimination brackets.

They tip off 6 PM Monday at Sumner High School against the winner of Chimacum and Bellevue Christian.

Win or lose they return to action Wednesday.

Two wins at districts and the Wolves advance to regionals, the final step before the state tourney.

The Wolves celebrate at the end of Friday’s upset of #1 Chimacum.

Playoffs? Yeah, we’re talking about playoffs.

The Coupeville High School boys’ hoops squad danced along a razor edge for a day or two, tempting elimination, but the final piece fell into place late Friday night and the Wolves are postseason bound.

A wild 72-68 overtime upset of league champ Chimacum put CHS in the driver’s seat for the Olympic League’s third and final playoff berth, then Port Townsend officially gave up the fight with a 41-40 loss to Klahowya.

Those results leave the Wolves at 3-5 in league play, a game up on the 2-6 Redhawks with one to go.

Coupeville took two of three from Port Townsend, giving them the tiebreaker.

The Wolves will wrap the regular season Monday at home with Senior Night, facing Klahowya (5-3), while Port Townsend lines up opposite Chimacum (6-2).

Regardless of the outcome of those games, Coupeville will play at least one more game, traveling for a loser-out postseason tilt at the home of the #2 seed from the Nisqually League Saturday, Feb. 14.

Win that game and the Wolves advance to the double elimination portion of districts, which would start with a rematch against Chimacum Feb. 17.

On the girls side of the ball, Coupeville (8-0) is the league champ and will avoid a loser-out game.

They start double elimination play Feb. 16 at Sumner High School against the winner of a game between the #3 seed from the Olympic and #2 seed from the Nisqually.

Klahowya (4-4) will be the #2 team from the Olympic, while Port Townsend (2-6) and Chimacum (2-6) play Monday to decide the league’s final playoff berth.

The top two teams at districts advance to regionals.
