Youth hoops season on horizon

Ready to hit the basketball court? Now’s your time.

Coupeville students in K-5 can register to play for free in the Coupeville Youth Basketball Association season, which runs from January 10 to March 5.

Parents or guardians can register players online, or in person at an open house Nov. 20.

The association web site listed in the flier above is expected to go live this coming Monday, Nov. 15.

Fall youth soccer beckons

Pitch mania sweeps Wolf Nation.

The Central Whidbey Soccer Club is currently registering players for its fall season, with all plans calling for a return to a normal season.

The rec soccer program is aimed at children who “desire to play soccer in a fun environment, with a level of competitiveness.”

Teams are offered for players from U6 to U15, with teams U10 and up playing games against clubs from North and South Whidbey.

Those contests are generally played on Saturdays in Coupeville, Oak Harbor or Langley.

Practices are in Coupeville, and are usually 2-3 times per week.

Registration closes September 1.

The club, which is run by volunteers, is also interested in adding new coaches.

Register now for youth soccer

Same sport, different look.

The Central Whidbey Soccer Club has opened registration for a spring season, though the ongoing pandemic will give things a slightly different look.

Practices begin April 12, but there won’t be games, at least at first.

The CWSC will operate an “Academy”-style season, with the hope that some “special events may be held on an occasional weekend.”

If that happens, players and parents will be notified well in advance.

Because of the change in format, registration has been reduced to $30 a player, which covers the player fee with the state and a CWSC t-shirt.

Five programs are currently offered — U10 teams for boys and girls, U12 teams for boys and girls, and a U15 coed team.

Little League needs players, volunteers

The fate of Central Whidbey Little League is in your hands.

As registration opens for a potential spring season, the search for a new generation of volunteers to run things is at its most-crucial point.

Virtually every member of the current CWLL board has a child who is about to “age out” of play, meaning new parents (or aunts and uncles, or grandparents, or just community-minded folk) will need to step up to keep things going.

There is a genuine potential that if enough new volunteers don’t surface, the league might vanish next year, leaving Coupeville kids with the choice of traveling to Oak Harbor or South Whidbey to play baseball or softball.

“We are in dire need of volunteers in every capacity,” said CWLL President Gordon McMillan. “These include managers, coaches, umpires, concession stand workers, food handlers, scorekeepers, and board members.”

For those on the fence about volunteering, the league invites them to join its next open board meeting February 1 at 6 PM to “ask questions, give your input, and to see how you can help CWLL be successful.”

With everyone still living in the Age of Coronavirus, CWLL is approaching registration with “excited” caution.

The league is working with little league officials and Island County’s Health and Parks departments to plan for a “safe and successful season with proper mitigation in response to the virus.”

Current plans, if county and state health department protocols can be met:

March 3 — Practices start
March 6 – May 29 — Minors and Majors baseball and softball season
May 1 – June 15 — T-Ball season
May 22 – June 30 — Juniors baseball and softball season

But with so much uncertainty, CWLL won’t collect any money at the present time.

Instead, each registered player will be placed on a hold list. Once there is definitive confirmation of a season, emails will be sent out with instructions on how to finish registration and pay.

Little League moves into on-deck circle

Time to think about the spring.

Central Whidbey Little League is hosting an “Early Registration Day and Skills Camp” Saturday, January 18.

The event runs from noon to 2 PM at the Coupeville High School gym, and is open to children ages 5-15 who live in Central Whidbey (Coupeville and Greenbank).

All age groups (T-Ball, baseball, and fastpitch softball) are included in the skills camp.

Parents are encouraged to register their children at the league’s site — https://www.centralwhidbeylittleleague.com/ — or at the skills camp.

If you get registered by Jan. 18, you save $10.

A second registration day (at full cost) and skills camp is set for Feb. 22.

For next Saturday’s event, players are asked to wear athletic clothing and “good gym shoes.”

It’s recommended they bring their baseball and softball gear, if they have it, though some will be provided for those in need.
