CMS spikers on the rise

They’re showing great promise.

Through three matches, Coupeville Middle School volleyball players continue to display ever-growing skill and a never-say-die attitude.

While the Wolves weren’t able to topple powerhouse King’s Monday, the Wolves did give their hosts a furious fight, winning a set in each rumble.

“The girls did great yesterday,” said CMS coach Shaloma Allen. “They are growing as a team, and we all had a great time.”

How Coupeville fared:

Varsity:

King’s held on for a 25-19, 17-25, 15-11 win, ultimately nipping the Wolves by just two points total.

“Varsity battled hard against a tough opponent,” Allen said.

“The team’s progress is undeniable. Each match, they’re gelling more as a unit, and their skills are sharpening with every play.”

JV:

Another close one, with King’s only finishing three points better in a 26-24, 20-25, 15-9 nailbiter.

“The junior varsity team also brought their A-game!” Allen said. “Their consistent improvement is something special.

“These players are learning fast and playing with so much heart!”

C-Team:

Coupeville came out blazing, winning the first set 26-24, before King’s rebounded to snag the next two frames 25-14 and 15-3 for the victory.

“The C-Team started strong, showcasing their potential and teamwork,” Allen said. “Sets two and three were tougher, but their spirit never wavered.

“This group is laying a solid foundation, and I’m excited to see their growth as the season continues.”

After back-to-back road trips, Coupeville plays its next three at home, starting with a match against Granite Falls this Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3:15 PM.

Allen is looking forward to Wolf fans getting a chance to see the spikers in action up close and personal.

“All three teams showed resilience, teamwork, and a positive attitude that makes coaching them such a joy,” she said.

“We’re building momentum and can’t wait to keep pushing forward in our next game!”

Young booters build bright future

They stood their ground.

Playing the defending state champs Saturday — on the day Orcas Island celebrated Homecoming — the plucky Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad gave its all against the juggernaut.

“Great game. Orcas won 8-0, but we played so much better than our first game against them,” said CHS coach Jim Kunz.

“We were organized and kept good coverage.

“We drove the ball down the field for quite a few shots. Unfortunately, none made it to the back of the net.”

While the deadly-efficient Vikings rattled home a collection of goals, Coupeville’s back line stood tall.

“Defense gave them a great fight with Sam Richards in the goal,” Kunz said.

“One of Sam’s many fantastic saves ended with his arms around the ball while an Orcas player tried to kick it through his chest.”

Also possibly helping the hometown team a bit was a lack of a full ref contingent, which caused some of the calls to be skewed.

“We knew going into this game that it would be extremely tough,” Kunz said. “Unfortunately, there was only a center ref and one line ref.

“Many offsides situations weren’t called and some of those resulted in goals, which was very disappointing,” he added.

“We had the line ref in the second half and Orcas got called offsides time and time again.”

Coupeville, which has a very young roster this season, sits at 2-5 at the halfway point of the season, with four of its final seven regular season games set to go down at Mickey Clark Field.

The first of those home games arrives Friday, Oct. 10, when CHS hosts Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.

“I’m excited to see our Wolves playing as a team,” Kunz said. “I imagine we’ll be giving some opponents a run for their money over the next few weeks.”

Wily Wolves tangle with Turks

“They all played their hearts out.”

While the Coupeville Middle School volleyball teams couldn’t quite come up with any wins Thursday in Sultan, the young Wolves impressed their coaches.

After having Tuesday’s trip to Lakewood bumped to Oct. 21 at the last second, CMS spiker guru Shaloma Allen was just thrilled to see her girls hit the floor — “The kids had a lot of energy” — and the addition of a new helper.

Katie Rohrbach joined Allen on the bench, providing another veteran voice.

“Yesterday was her first day. She was phenomenal with the girls and I’m looking forward to seeing her add her skills to the team.”

Playing in the wilds of Sultan, the Wolves pushed the Turks, but all three squads fell in the end.

The Coupeville varsity lost 25-19, 25-14, 14-16, while the JV was nipped 25-17, 25-10, 15-12. The C-Team came up on the short end of a 25-20, 21-25, 15-4 tally.

All three Wolf teams sit at 0-2 on the young season, with their next action involving a road trip to King’s Oct. 6.

Toasty temps, sweet success

The day was hot, while the Wolves were scorching.

It was 89 degrees on the turf in Marysville Tuesday, but the heat never bothered the visiting Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team.

Banging home their first scores of the young season, the Wolves slipped past host Grace Academy 2-1 in a nail biter, raising their record to 1-2.

Coupeville controlled the pace of play most of the way, with their private school foes netting their lone goal off of a penalty kick late in the going.

Other than that, it was all Wolves, all the time.

“We put some changes and plays in action,” said Coupeville coach Jim Kunz. “They came out strong from the beginning. Communication and passing was much better.”

The Wolves kept the Grace goalie jumping all day, with Edmund Wilson finding the back of the net off of a pass from Sawyer Rudat, before picking up the assist on a score by Liam Lawson.

It was the first high school goal for both Wolves, with Wilson becoming the third member of his family to score in a CHS uniform.

His older brothers, Aidan and Cael, finished their prep pitch careers with 13 goals apiece, tying them for 7th best in program history.

Lawson, a freshman whiz kid, is part of a legendary prairie family which includes athletic standouts such as grandpa Dale Sherman, aunt Katie Smith, and mom “Killer” Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil.

The Wolves get back at it Friday, Sept. 19, with a home soccer doubleheader at Mickey Clark Field.

Pitch powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian is the foe, with the girls game at 4:00 PM and the boys kicking off at 6:00. Admission is free.

Doubly delightful day for netters

Shuffle the lineup, shuffle the results.

Coupeville and Granite Falls coaches agreed to play Wednesday’s non-conference girls’ tennis match with an emphasis on doubles action, and the Wolves came away with their first team win of the season.

The Tigers, who were playing host, requested that CHS singles players be paired with newer teammates and play pro sets, creating a different learning experience.

“Mashed up the doubles teams and brought some doubles teams back together,” said CHS coach Starla Seal. “Experienced players could act as a guide for the new players.

“Overall, it was a good match.”

With the action moving along at a good clip, the teams even had time to play two singles matches at the end, with Wolf netters Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller remaining undefeated on the campaign.

Coupeville will be back at home Friday, hosting The Bush School in a non-league tilt — the team’s second-to-last home rumble of the spring.
