Borderites power past Wolves

They left their offense at home.

Unable to generate much of an attack Saturday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad was blanked 12-0 by host Blaine, leaving the young Wolves winless on the season.

The non-conference defeat, which came against an always strong 1A hardball program, drops CHS to 0-3 on the campaign.

Up next is a return home, with the first Northwest 2B/1B League game of the season on the docket.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor Tuesday, before island-hopping for a rematch with the Wolverines two days later.

Coupeville will then close a busy week with a non-conference home game Saturday, Mar. 29 against Island rival South Whidbey.

Saturday’s game was originally set to be the season opener but was rained out.

This time around, the liquid sunshine remained at bay, but the host Borderites stayed hot all afternoon.

Blaine pushed one run across in the first, four more in the second, then tossed a five-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.

Two more runs in the fourth set the final margin, with the game mercy ruled after five frames.

Coupeville only put three baserunners aboard in this one, with the lone hit being a two-out single from Camden Glover in the top of the first inning.

Other than that, the only brief fire ignited by the Wolves came in the fourth, when Glover and Coop Cooper drew back-to-back one-out walks.

Unfortunately for CHS, the next batter popped up into a double play, with the Blaine catcher snagging the airborne ball for out #2, then nailing a straying runner at second for out #3.

Senior Landon Roberts and freshman Carson Grove teamed up on the mound for the Wolves, with Roberts picking up two strikeouts.

While they were outhit 10-1 on the day, one bright spot for Coupeville’s hardball warriors came on defense, where the visitors committed their fewest errors of the still-young season.

Wily Wolves tangle with testy Turks

It was a quick turnaround.

Less than 24 hours after hosting Granite Falls, the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams hit the road Thursday for a trek to the wilds of Sultan.

While there, the Wolves played a full slate of three games against the Turks, with Team #3 continuing to set a torrid pace.

How the day went:

 

Team #1:

Sultan’s top squad, always a heavy hitter in the Cascade League, got out to a big lead early and rolled to a 38-12 win.

The Wolves struggled on offense in the first half, being blanked in the opening frame and facing a 23-2 deficit at the break.

But things improved quite a bit after that, with CMS coming out on top 6-5 in the third, and fighting hard until the end.

Cameron Van Dyke paced the Wolves with a team-high four points, while Emma Cushman, Kaleigh Millison, KeeAyra Brown, and Kennedy O’Neill each banked in a bucket in support.

Sophia Batterman, Laurel Crowder, Annaliese Powers, Finley Helm, Allie Powers, and Elizabeth Marshall round out the Coupeville roster.

The Wolves have claimed the ferry as their own.

 

Team #2:

Toss out the third quarter and this was a three-point game.

But a 13-2 Sultan run during the first frame after halftime stung, and the Wolves fell 32-18.

Up until that point, the Turks clung to just an 8-4 lead after one quarter of play, and a 12-10 advantage at the break.

Millison was top girl for the Wolves, rattling the rims for six points, with Helm banking in four.

Hazel Goldman, Emma Green, Selah Rivera, and Aubrey Flowers all added a bucket to the cause, with Cassie Powers, Laurel Crowder, Annaliese Powers, Sabrina Judnich, Addison Jacobson, and Claire Lachnit also in the rotation.

 

Team #3:

The squad that can’t be beat.

After sitting out the opener against South Whidbey when the Falcons couldn’t come up with a third squad, Coupeville’s gunners have gone 2-0.

Following up a win against Granite, the young Wolves held on Thursday to claim a 16-13 victory.

“Team 3 is crushing it!” said CMS coach Makana Stone. “Defensive mentality and teamwork on offense is really clicking for Team 3 – some hard workers really stepping up.”

Coupeville built a 6-2 lead through one quarter, then held Sultan scoreless in the second frame en route to heading to the locker room with a 10-2 advantage.

The Turks made things interesting with a 10-4 run in the third, but Coupeville’s defense limited their hosts to just a single free throw in the fourth to nail down the win.

Ava Alford knocked down eight points to lead the way, with Annabelle Cundiff torching the nets for six and Crowder banking in a bucket.

Ruby Folkestad, Sophia Magdolen, Lachnit, Bella Sandlin, Abbey Hunt, Ari Vinson, Cassie Powers, Emily Rains, Sophia Burley, and Reagan Green round out the hottest team in Wolf country.

Bronec big, but Tigers too tough

The Wolves got caught in the bounce-back.

Napavine, one of the best varsity boys 2B hoops squads in the state, got stung Saturday in a narrow loss to Adna, as the two schools scrapped for first place in the always-tough Central 2B League.

Monday rolled around, and Coupeville, having made the 152-mile trek off island for a non-conference tilt, found itself in the bullseye.

Outscored 27-7 during a frantic first quarter by the host Tigers, the Wolves rebounded to play three competitive quarters but fell 76-52.

The loss drops Coupeville to 3-10 on the season, and the Wolves now turn to the heart of their own league schedule.

CHS, which sits at 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, visits Darrington Friday to kick off a six-game string of conference games, with prime playoff positioning up for grabs.

On to league play!

While Monday’s first quarter may be something they want to forget, the memory of the next three frames could be a strong inspiration for the Wolves.

Coupeville dug deep to “win” the second (12-11) and fourth (16-14) quarters and got scoring from nine of 11 players.

While Napavine star Karsen Denault topped all players with a game-high 20 points, Wolf big man Hurlee Bronec almost matched him.

The CHS senior, who has been on a bit of an offensive rampage of late, poured in a team-best 19 points, while scoring in every quarter.

Hurlee Bronec topped out with eight points in the third and passed a personal milestone in the game, cracking the 150-point club for his varsity hoops career.

That leaves him hot on the heels of twin brother Hunter, who, for the moment at least, still leads the family scoring race at 158-153.

Chase Anderson rattled the rims for nine points in support of Hurlee Bronec, including netting a pair of second-half three-balls, while Johnny Porter banked in six.

Camden Glover (5), Landon Roberts (4), Jack Porter (4), Hunter Bronec (2), Davin Houston (2), and Malachi Somes (1) also scored, with Easton Green and Carson Field rounding out the rotation in the road game.

Houston’s fourth-quarter bucket was his first as a varsity player, as he becomes the 428th Wolf boy I’ve been able to document scoring in a varsity game between 1917-2025.

Hoops stars primed for finale

They’re headed home for the finale.

Having survived a four-game road trip, with the last of those clashes coming Monday at Lakewood, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams finally make it back to their home gym.

The Wolves close their eight-game schedule with a rumble against South Whidbey this coming Monday, Dec. 16, facing off with a rival they swept three games from the first time around.

While CMS was competitive against Lakewood, a much-larger school which funnels students to a 2A high school, the Cow Town hoops stars came up just short on the scoreboard.

How things played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville netted a pair of three-balls but fell 65-23.

Kamden Ratcliff paced the Wolves with a team-high eight points, while Chayse Van Velkinburgh (7), Jonathan Kappes (6), and River Simpson (2) rounded out the offensive attack.

Xander Beaman, Trey Stewart, Gracen Joiner, Diesel Eck, and Calvin Kappes also saw floor time for the Wolves.

 

Level 2:

The final score is still up for question, as the books don’t match, but Darius Stewart popped for 10 to lead CMS in a narrow loss.

Joiner (6), Colton Ashby (2), and Cyrus Sparacio (1) rippled the nets, as well, while Jacob Lujan, Jonah Meek, Aiden Wheat, Cole Van Dyke, Mario Martinez, Xander Flowers, Trenton Thule, and Maverick Walling were also in uniform.

 

Level 3:

Les Queen, who leads all Wolves in scoring this season, pumped in a game-high 22 in a 35-31 defeat.

Jonah Meek made the nets bounce for five — becoming the 24th CMS player to score this season — while Liam Stoner and Henry Jackson both banked in a bucket.

Talon Gamble, Kion Tellery, Jack Bailey, Carson Marley, and Oliver Miller rounded out the roster.

Young Wolves “challenging themselves in every game”

Growth over scores.

While the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams were swept in three games at Sultan Thursday, Wolf coaches headed back to the bus in a positive mood.

“The amount of smiles and laughs we had before, during, and after the games is enough of a win for us coaches!” RayLynn Ratcliff said.

“These boys are working hard, they’re engaged and learning, they’re challenging themselves in every game and having fun while doing it!”

Coupeville wraps up four straight on the road with a trip to Lakewood Monday, before closing the season at home against South Whidbey Dec. 16.

How Thursday played out:

 

Level 1:

Diesel Eck rumbled in the paint for a team-high 13 points, while Kamden Ratcliff knocked down eight in support.

River Simpson (5), Jonathan Kappes (3), and Xander Beaman (2) also scored, with Trenton Thule, Maverick Walling, Calvin Kappes, Gracen Joiner, Darius Stewart, and Colton Ashby rounding out the roster.

 

Level 2:

Darius Stewart was high man for the Wolves, popping for nine points, with Aiden Wheat, Joiner, and Cyrus Sparacio each adding a bucket.

Also seeing floor time were Jacob Lujan, Mario Martinez, Ashby, Cole Van Dyke, Xander Flowers, and Jonah Meek.

 

Level 3:

Les Queen, who leads all CMS scorers this season with 72 points, banked in 10, with Henry Jackson rippling the nets for five, including netting a three-ball.

Liam Stoner and Talon Gamble added a bucket apiece, with Gamble becoming the 23rd Wolf to score this season.

Kion Tellery, Jack Bailey, Carson Marley, and Oliver Miller also played.
