The weather was ideal, the runners were quick and the 2014 edition of Race the Reserve went off Saturday in style.

Everyone thought this group came from Sweden just to run. The real reason: “Savalza! He is, how you say, bigger than Bieber, yes, in our country!!”

“Oh, it’s true, it’s true. I’m huge in Sweden.”

Nearly 300 runners lined up for Saturday’s Race the Reserve. One was brave enough to come off the line at the crack of dawn without a shirt.

More beast than man, a mythic figure whose exploits still waft across the fog-enshrouded Island of his birth, Danny Savalza can not be tamed.

He must run free. It is his nature.

He does not live in our world, we live in his.

Accept it and become one with your inner Savalza. It is your only salvation.

Danny Savalza was back in town Saturday. If you didn’t see him, it’s probably because he was moving too fast.

The former Coupeville High School Athlete of the Year finished 15th in the half marathon at the 2014 edition of Race the Reserve, with his entry fee going to help fund graduation events for the guys and gals following in his footsteps at CHS.

The popular event, which drew nearly 300 entries this year for the half marathon, 10K and 5K, benefits the CHS Class of 2015.

Kurt Warwick of Clinton took the title in the half marathon, clocking in at one hour, 15 minutes and 24.4 seconds.

Joining him on the victory stand were Brian Comer of Sammamish (10K, 37:13.6) and Joshua Sharp of Oxnard (5K, 17:46.5).

Louisa Hays of Seattle (6th in the half marathon), Molly Gwinn of East Wenatchee (3rd in 10K) and Olivia Flack of Coupeville (4th in 5K) were the highest female placers.

Ty Eck, who will be an eighth grader at CMS in the fall, had the best local finish, nabbing second in the 5K.

If you had a Coupeville listed next to your name in the official race results (and my eyes didn’t glaze over too badly while jotting down results), you should see your name below.

If you’re not from Coupeville, tough, this is not Oxnard Sports.

Shamrock 5K on its way!!

They had cupcakes at last year’s race. Anticipation builds for a repeat.

You have five weeks to get in shape.

The third annual Shamrock 5K Walk/Run, put on by the Central Whidbey Co-Op Preschool, is set for Saturday, March 15 and registration is open now.

The entry fee is $25 (includes a t-shirt) through Mar. 8, and $30 day of race.

The run will start at the Coupeville High School track at Mickey Clark Field on S. Main with a Kids Dash (eight and under) at 9:30 AM.

The 5K starts at 10, with the awards ceremony (and refreshments) at 11:30.

Race day registration is from 8:30-9:30 at the track.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers, as well as for best costumes. Racers are encouraged to dress-up, with as much green as possible.

Runners using baby strollers are welcome.
