Win big games, get big props.

The Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad dismantled Auburn Adventist Academy Monday, winning 69-57 in a game the Wolves controlled almost start to finish.

Knocking off a previously undefeated Eagles team propels CHS to 9-2 on the season, with immediate dividends in the rankings.

Coupeville lands #7 among 2B schools in a chart compiled by SB Live, which was released Tuesday afternoon.

Brad Sherman’s squad also bounces up to #8 in the RPI rankings produced by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Though, since the WIAA recently had a nonexistent program ranked #1 in 1B for three weeks, we all need to take that into consideration.

The most powerful and revered of the number crunchers, Evans Rankings, will update its own list in the near future, at which point the Wolves are likely to crash the top 10 after crunching Auburn.

But, as those Eagles can tell you after being upset in Cow Town, it’s ultimately about what happens on the floor and not what the computers think.

With that in mind, Coupeville gets back at it (weather permitting) Friday with a trip to the outer islands to square off with Orcas.

They see us.

The preseason props continue to roll in for Coupeville High School football, which is coming off its first league crown and trip to state since 1990.

First, the Wolves landed at #10 among 2B schools in early rankings from Recruit Radar, and now SB Live is picking CHS to defend its Northwest 2B/1B League title.

The website has spent the past week revealing how it thinks every league in Washington state, in each classification, will play out.

When it comes to the NWL, SB Live has Coupeville holding off Friday Harbor and La Conner in the three-team race.

The article, written by Todd Milles, offers this rationale:

Reigning champions posted first winning league record since 2005, and although they graduated a ton of skill-position production from last season, they still have skilled QB Logan Downes running the show.

As he prepares to chase records during his senior campaign, Angie and Ralph’s youngest also nabbed some personal preseason accolades this week.

Logan Downes, who aims to unseat big bro Hunter atop the school’s career passing touchdown chart, was tabbed by Recruit Radar gridiron guru Tyson McCallum as one to watch.

Coupeville begins practice next Wednesday, Aug. 16, with the season opener set for Friday, Sept. 1.

The Wolves welcome non-conference foe Klahowya, a 1A squad, to Cow Town that night, with a 6:00 PM kickoff.

We rolled right over them.

Sparked by a grandma on a mission, Wolf Nation overwhelmed 37 other fan bases to carry our guy to a lopsided win at the polls.

Coupeville High School senior Xavier Murdy, one of the leaders of a 13-0 boys basketball squad, handily won a voting showcase which ended Sunday night.

The poll brought together a mad mix of girls and boys from across the state, and hailing from every classification, and was hosted by SB Live Washington.

Its official name is the “WaFd Bank Washington High School Athlete of the Week,” and for the dates of Jan. 17-23, that’s one Mr. Murdy.

And it was like a tsunami hitting the shore, as the Wolf senior captured 138,436 votes, or 48.14% of every vote cast.

Murdy held off Zillah hoops star Ashton Waldman, who started strong, and finished less so, ending with 113,106 tallies.

Third place was way, way back, with Eastlake’s Will Woodward, a basketball player who has signed with the University of Washington as a baseball star, eking out 8,185 votes.

In all, the 38 athletes involved in the poll brought in 287,568 votes.

Just a small smidge of X-Man’s fan club.

Hard worker, selfless player.

Coupeville High School senior Xavier Murdy is prone to filling up the stat sheet, but always with an eye on one thing — the final score on the board.

“We got the dub!” is how he proudly summed things up after a recent romp, part of an 11-0 start for the red-hot Wolves.

Monday, Murdy got some respect from the big boys in the biz, when Scorebook Live hailed his work from last week, when he helped spur CHS to four wins in five days.
